yah...tis very hard to seperate them...but they are still difference (as you note when saying the Atreides family fits within fantasy).

A classic example is Anne McCaffery Dragonrider of Pern series. On the surface it looks like a fantasy, but once you read it, the people are settlers from earth, who left because of poor conditions to start a low technolgy settlement. The Dragons come into it through genetic engineering to provide a long term solution to the spawn? fire? whateer from the planet, that rains down every 200 years or so from a passing planet and destroys the settlement.

Its one of those books that my sister think is fantasy, and I think is Sci-Fi.

But its a good book because of it story and characters...no matter what catagory you put it in.

Though I find it hard to nail down a great definition of Fantasy, great Sci Fi is not Fantasy.

Fantasy generally contain spells, mythical creatures and/or some sort of super natural. Sci Fi can be very similar, but with "scientific" reasons behind it. If you follow this arguement through, you will notice that it gets *very* hard to distinguish the difference. If can define the difference better, please let me know.

There are some authors (Anne McKathery (sp?)) who blend Sci-Fi/Fantasy. I like these authors.

    Thats not true.

I work at a large Cable Company in Oz (not foxtel). The tape library here has a Halon system (as do most tape libraries in media centers...need to for insurance).

Yes, the Halon system sucks most air out of the room...but it is a *most*, not *all*. There is *just* enough air left which allows people to breath...just.

We had it go off once, with a technition inside (I think it was testing or something). The guy survived...but did say it go hard to breath. Your statement is very correct. Almost.

A higher percentage of the Mac callers are from people who have no idea. Why? Because those who have even a tiny idea can work it out themselves. That was my theory. And we backed it up with some numbers.

    - A Mac user was less likely to call for support than a Windows user.
    - A Mac user who called was much more likely to fall into the "idiot" catagory.

This was because 20% (approx) of windows users who called were in the idiot basket. The other 80% had some idea, but Windows can be hard and thus they called.

80% of Mac users who called in were idiots. The other 20% had some idea, but we all make mistakes.

In summary, there were less calls from the Mac population, but they were more likely to be idiots. There were more calls from the Windows Population (representative), but they were more likely to be with it.

Optus has not made a profit on its cable division.

Nor has it come close to paying off the cost of putting the cable into your house.

Over the last financial year, Optus lost $400 million!

Mobile made a profit, as did long distance, buisness and dial up services.

Optus Cable, both IP and TV lost money. In a big way. Be thankful they haven't shut down the division, as was discussed in last weeks financial review.

And you should be thankful compared to telstra, for many reasons.

    - Telstra FORCED everyone onto the 3gig plan, and didn't honour current contracts. Optus is.
    - Telstra charges something like 15c a megabyte when you go over the plan. Thats a very expensive mistake you can make.
    - If you are on a contract with Optus, they are honouring it.
    - They won't cut your connection if you go over your limit.
    - They won't charge you lots of money either.
    - Think of the good deal you have been given so far. $30USD unlimmited (almost) broad-band internet connection of the highest quality? Those sorts of prices are good even in the USA!

I misnamed Ultimate TV for MS TV. And the article does say that the division was closed.

Of course that doesn't mean other MS TV activities have stoped, nor that they have given up (or totally stoped) iTV work.

SEATTLE, Jan 22 (Reuters) - Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) is eliminating its Ultimate TV unit but will bring the product into its MSN consumer group in an effort to consolidate its various television-related initiatives, a company spokeswoman said on Tuesday.

The move will affect about 500 jobs at the Ultimate TV unit in Mountain View, California. About two-thirds of those will be immediately moved to other areas of Microsoft while the rest will have three months to find other work at Microsoft or can choose to leave, spokeswoman Erin Brewer said.

Ultimate TV is a Microsoft product that marries digital video recording capabilities with basic interactive and Internet functions.

The remaining two-thirds of the employees will be reassigned to jobs within the MSN, Xbox or Microsoft TV divisions.
