I use Mandrake 7.1 at my desktop machine. A friend of mine approached me about choosing a distro that is 'built to be a server' straight out of box. security / web / email...etc all (atleast partially ) setup.
Ahem,
I totally understand the need for ads to generate revenue. But if the 'adds' is re-ordering search results that compromises quality and the whole purpose of search engine. I would rather see relevent search results and some ugly, animating banners instead.
Wasn't there another search engined tried to do the same some time back. ie 'sponsors' pages were ranked first.
I saw this ad, in this weekends paper. It is *drum roll*... yes our beloved APEX player. ( see past Slashdot stories)
The previous one APEX 600-AD can play DVD / CD / VCD & mp3
. This one has 3 disc changer in addition.
I have the single disc version and I have nothing but good things to say
about this geek's toy. My friends went and bought name brands (Panasonic / Sony) for twice/thirce the price (I got mine for $150 in Circuit City ). But still some of theirs don't play VCDs and don't have the zoom / sound / play functions of APEX. But what is kinky is it can play MP3 CDs (even CD-RWs without closing the CD - I haven't tried this, but I know others who do this successfully).
Here is circuit city link
Forget this vaporware crap and buy one that works and affordable. And this
is your good chance to upset MPAA :=))
I went to University of Melbourne, Australia. Australia - you know where the 2000 Olympic games are:-) Now I work in Silicon Valley. My 4 year university taught me lot of things that are directly related my career.
Now I interview candidates for our company. I was so amazed to find out how clueless some of the candidates who did even had a Masters degree about real world matters. (ie if I ask some one which language you would pick for a certain project, C++ / Java, most of them weren't able to make a judgement using technical merit. That was one simple example). I am not tarnishing degrees at all. I have met some great minds from Univs.
What I was told is US bachelors are a bit shallow and people do the 'real' thing in masters. Dunno how true this is. But from my experience interviewing candidates this seems to have a bit of truth in it.
My take is
Get a degree if you can, but also get as much work experience as possible while you are studying. This will prepare you real world and will give you a taste for it early on. That is what I did, and it certainly helped me land on very good jobs later. Your intern doesn't have to be good paying job. Just get the experience and references. BUild up your network. This will help you a lot when you are looking for a full time job later.
I had a friend back in Univ, who is a high-scorer (avg 95%) and a very keen / hard working student. I am a 75-80% student. But I had very atractive offers purely b/c I had managed to find some summer / part time work (course related of course) when ever I can.
In today's market, if you have a good foundation (a degree) and some solid work experience (summer / part time) you are GOLD .
My first Linux experience was in 1997 (redhat 4.2). Since then the following have improved dramatically
- pre-install steps (shrinkin windows partition...etc, Mandrake (http://www.linux-mandrake.com) will do that for you)
- install (pop in Mandrake 7.1 (helium) CD and watch the install. I managed to amaze many of my collegues - NT users - with the ease of install)
- Apps : thanks to KDE / Gnome competiton. We have planty of apps in a very short period.
- Support : LinuxCare for example
- Hardware : I saw Dell & CompaQ (both giving out nice freebies) in San Jose LInux Expo. Need I say more:-)
- Awareness : This struck me pleasantly. On Linux Expo Sun Solaris 8 had 'lxrun' which will run linux binaries un modified. When is the last time we heard a big player playing cool by his 'little brother'. It is typically the other way around for survivol purposes
ALso see the Linux IPOs. Pretty mucy every one know who RedHat are:-)
Software growth/acceptance is EXPONENTIAL. Ie slow start rapid growth (think of e^x, x > 0). So Linux will grow more than it did in the last 3 years (I witnessed).
First let me say, USenet is far from dead. I use it to find answered to technial questions and find about products (how a new graphics card works under linux..etc) regularly.
I have been using DEjA for a while and in the past year or so, the quality exponentially went down.
So now I am looking for alternatives? A search on google doesn't reveal much.
Can people name any similar services that exists? A poster mentioned dogpile. ANy others?
I would really like to see GOOGLE getting into this.
Remember Nasa lost a satellite b/c the software (Locheed, I guess) forgot to do the conversion b/w American units (feet, mile..) to Metric units (defacto Scientific measurement unit)?
When I heard the news, I thought 'what a waste! THis can only happen in America':-)
I personally don't care what unit we use, as long as every one around us are talking the same thing....
Exactly. For a techonology to spread wide, it should be affordable. There is no freaking way I am foking out that much money for a decent HDTV. Yeah I know it will enhance your 'viewing pleasure' yada, yada. But to watch news for 20 mins a day my trusty SAMSUNG is good enough, thankyou.
Same deal with Home theatre systems. Unless they have some affordable version, no one except sound-heads going to get the latest system with THX processor & AC-7.
I am also sick of the technology companies charging the premium for early adoptors. Say in CPU world, if you are the first one to buy 2Ghz Intel chip, you pay through your nose. I understand the cost of R&D. But there should be a way to spread the cost, and still sell it for 19.95:-)
What I really want is, a device that has the following - a Palm (color would be nice) : including PC sync - cell phone - Mp3 player - affordable (bah!:-)
The closest thing I can find is a cell phone from Sprint. IT is Palm III + Cell phone. Only available from GoodGuys only. Price..a whopping US $700!!!!!
I worked in Melbourne after my graduation. I got paid around AU$35k/yr. WHich is kind of a pay for fresh grads. It allowed me to do a decent living. But I didn't stand out from the crowd:-) I was just another person on the road driving a HOnda or a Ford, Not a BMW or Lexus or Audi.:-)
But let me tell you, I loved the company I worked for. No corporate culture. Engineers were looked aftered very well.
Seriouly, compared to US pay, Aus pay will make you laugh. But they still think you are earning a fortune.
And stock options in most companies are unheard of or peanuts.
THen I left for US:-) My salary is almost tripple. Even though living expenses are "VERY" high in bay area, I can still save more. And I like the technology I work with.
As a person worked in Singapore for a very short time, I can tell that you will very seriously dissappointed in Singapore too. Pay is poor and the people aren't that nice to you as you are used to in Aus or US. It was a strict 9-5 job.
All in all, I think Silicon Valley is the area where you are most valued at. But it could be a quick conclusion. I also heard Canada is picking up. May be some one can clarify this. And I heard Canada has a good health care system and such.
cheers LinuxLover
how to convert Pine aliases
on
Mutt Hits 1.0
·
· Score: 1
I had to use Pine in the past and I have a lot of (~200) *Email address aliases* stored in Pine format! Under different catogories too!!
IS there any way to preserve the catogories and convert those Email aliases to Mutt, without too much work (ie typing them back in:-)
I was wondering where I can find some comparisons (feature list, generated code performance, and ISO C++ complaince) of common compilers (EGCS, Sun's CC, metrowerks..etc)
Every one(Sun, Metrowerks) claims theirs is the best and have some bogus bench marks (Sun for work shop)! I need to see something from neutral.
So that I can convince my manager to adopt say EGCS over Sun CC:-)
I use Mandrake 7.1 at my desktop machine. A friend of mine approached me about choosing a distro that is 'built to be a server' straight out of box. security / web / email ...etc all (atleast partially ) setup.
Any one has any thoughts?

I am proud to be an alumini of University of Melbourne Computer Science dept. There were (and still are) some great minds working there.
:-)
I came to know about Mercury at my 3rd year. I have always thought that is 'one of the cool research projects out of this world'
good to see the platform is spreading....
I would like to see Bruce Perens or RMS post their take on Slashdot.
I would like to see Google get into Usenet search business. I used Deja.com, but now it is a commercially bloated crap site.
With Google's extraordinary ability to sort pages, it would be an ideal move.

I am planning to get a laptop soon, so I need to know which DVD drives are supported (if at all!) to make a decision.
