Some people don't have the experience of installing RH or any other distro. Sure it may seem steep to you but some people would trade $$$ for convenience (and that is what Dell is doing).
OK, my question is who on Slashdot is stupid enough to have a PC running a Microsoft PC set up at home (at least) so it can access the Internet? I've felt for years this would be a very bad thing to do. Microsoft has shown for Years that they can not be trusted in this respect.
I work in a small office dominated by WinNT. Our work is not sensitive to the occasional BSOD (as long as we save it often) so we can live with it. And since our work is in WinNT, I need to have WinNT at home so I can do some stufff out of the office.
My university instructors are all using MSWord. If I try to use SO5 to write my papers with charts graphs and pictures, then it would end up messed up on the other end. I can't affort that.
...over a Dell anyday. Their products cost more but you get what you pay for (kinda like Sun...). And besides when was the last time anyone did any fantastic graphics work on a Dell???
Of course this makes me wonder how Linux made it this far. There must be some kind of paradox here. As I see it, there is no real incentive for anyone to contribute to free software. But yet somehow it just gets developed. Can somebody please enlighten me?
One recent issue of Newsweek had a picture of Linus. KDE is being incorporated into many systems. Lotsa people depend on Samba for cross platform compatibility.
What incentive do those people have to create all this wonderful software? I'll give you two reasons.
First, the person will be forever be synomous with that software if it is useful. If people like it, then that person will have a good reputation.
Second, that person can put that achievement on his or her resume and put that reputation to work. Worked on Samba? KDE? Mozilla? What employer wouldn't love a great programmer on their staff!!!
In a way free software DOES rake in money for the developers.
If they can get away from this we can start being truly Windows-free.

I was a newbie once long long ago in a galaxy far far away... But I persisted -- I sought and read everything I could buy or browse. Now I help enlighten (some of) the masses. Don't bust on them! They might not know they need or want it until they try. Help them.
IT SAVES TIME!!! Plus I don't want to dink around with tar files and patches to the point of destroying my system. I've already installed 2.0.36-1 in my RH52 system at home and work with a minimum of fuss. IMHO the RPM system is why RH is the leading distro in the US.
Good for them.
Oh, so is THAT why my NTW is BSODing on me twice a day?
Just my $0.02.
PS -- I feel this site should be devoted ONLY to tech news, MicroDuff or otherwise. That's why we have CNN for the other news.

It never worked for me. Yes it did run but I could never get a game started. Didn't exactly sell me over.
