  1. Yes failure! on Open Source's Achilles Heel · · Score: 1
Alot of people have been saying the next target for Linux should be the corporate desktop. If developers feel that features and stability should be overriding points and GUI features are to be relegated to the background, then Linux will never be used in large numbers. Why? Companies want tools that WILL DO THE JOB. That includes power, stability, flexibility, and USABILITY. Managers don't want their employees to spend hours fscking around with sendmail/apache/whatever.

Home users will use Linux if they have an itch to scratch; however they are not the primary audience.

The majority of the songs available (other than those from Bare Naked Ladies) suck. I don't want to pay $16-25 for a CD that has just a song or two that I like. I figure if I like three or more tracks, I'll buy the CD regardless cuz I don't feel like carrying MP3s around. Those MP3s I do like, download, and listen to, I get sick of them real fast and are deleted. How is that different from listening to songs on the radio?

    Just my $0.02.

So if you could please tell me how you did it.

Hey guys do you want alot more people to start using Linux on Alphas? Start doing some software porting!!! You guys claim you support RHL for the DS10 Webbrick? Start making some Alpha RPMs and posting them on rpmfind.net or some Compaq site! It's really annoying not being able to use Netscape, StarOffice, ssh, MySQL, Oracle, or the countless other number of apps and services available on the x86 side. And please make tar/gz'ed binaries available if not RPMs.

Anyone know how I can get around this?

The greater number/size of introns may result in a lesser chance of damaging exons.

My understanding of their last mission statement is "A computer on every desktop." I interpret this as including that of the home user.

When Sun first started in '82, they aimed for the high-end workstation market. Now they still do. And they also make enterprise-class software and hardware solutions. I betcha the average Joe has no idea what Sun does.

Linux was started as a Unix clone for students who couldn't afford the high price tag that came with the Unix solutions offered by Sun/NExT/etc. Now those original students have grown up on Linux and are now working, they have no reason to move to another Unix platform for home/SOHO use even if it was free. The x86 platform IMO still offers the most bang for the buck. Not only that, a layperson can still have the multimedia capabilities of Win/Mac under Linux that Solaris still lacks.

All of this because Sun never intended to shoot for the home consumer/small-time developer.
