It remains to be seen weather the non free products will be able to keep pace with the free ones. I don't think that it was a coinsidence that Star Office, KDE, Mozilla, Interbase etc all changed their license to the GPL. Let's face it it's very hard to compete with Microsoft's pool of thousands of programmers and SUN by open sourcing a product that they paid big bucks for has pretty much admitted that they did not have to resources to keep up with MS office.

Time will tell if that money apple is charging for their OS will buy enough brain power to compete against windows. So far the open source developers have made a go with linux and BSD. My guess is that charging a few bucks for an OS is a loosing proposition when MS has a few billion to throw around. If SUN, netscape/aol, borland can't do it how do you think apple will?

Also remember that Bill G makes a couple of hundred dollars for every mac sold. Once people find out that by making improvements to darwin they are actually putting money in Bills pocket how much will they want to participate?

Yes there needs to be good explanation page for these. I won't go into it but it has to do with the fact unix started in universities with many users and systems. A lot of the applications were shared and NFS mounted into various parts of the file system. It all makes great sense when you learn about it and it's a rather elegant way to configure and manage multiple servers and multiple users.
I am hoping the people at Apple have made provisions for that. If they are targeting their OS at end users and as a desktop operating system then fine redesign the current file tree it makes good sense to simplify it. OTOH if they are targeting the enterprise they are going to need robust ways to manage multiple machines and users.

Say what you want about X (a lot of people gripe about it) but I would sorely miss being able to throw the graphical output of my applications to different machines.

Do you know if the MAC GUI is remotable like X is? It would be super cool if they built a PDF based remote viewing system.

Sure maybe in some deep bowels of esoteric text this ideal is put forth but in real life it breed insane accumulation of wealth. It breeds an laughably uneven divison of labor as well as of wealth. Maybe you are right and manybe just like the russians corrupted communism the americans have corrupted capitalism but the end result is the same.

Hey that does not piss me off I am an atheist I don't belive in a higher power. What it should piss off are the christians and the moslems who do not believe that humans are 100% sovereign. This was my point exactly. Capitalism was the only philosophy able to completely turn the religious tomes upside down and inside out. Take a look at the techings of Christ or the budha they are full of exhultations to serve the poor and to work for the good of the society. Switching to postgres will be a laborious process but postgres is actually fun to work with as opposed to SQL server which makes me want to kill puppies.
After all your back end is done you can start on the clients by then klyx will be out and your developers can start porting their VB apps to klyx. This way they can support both linux and windows clients with the same code.

OK go to it!. Seriously it's taking a while but it's possible so far we have converted file print, mail, ftp, name server, web server. The database is next!

Staggering how the word ethical has been corrupted. I stand in awe of Adam Smith (and his followers) who turned two thousand years of Christian, budhist and Islamic philosophy upside down in one fell swoop by elevating greed, gluttony, avarice, envy, covetousness, pride etc into virutes. No major religion (except for satanism of course and that is not a major religion) advocated accumulation of wealth as a virtue or an ethical standard to strive towards. In fact both Christ and Buddha spoke out constantly against accumulation of wealth and preached a life of near poverty.

All philosophers who railed against a religion based ethical structure and who advocated a more humanist/atheist structure failed miserably whereas Adam Smith smashed the religions so hard there is not one modern religious leader who will speak out against mindless greed. Jesus chased the money changers and Fallwell raises money for the republicans. As an atheist it makes me warm all over.

Sure I can hope that the sysadmins would simply block out all the MS users and tell them to complain to MS but you and I know that will not happen. MS owns the computer market and therefore a standard is whatever MS says it is plain and simple.
