    Maybe. But as I said my prefered email client is mozilla and so it my prefered browser. I don't do IRC all that much so the mozilla IRC client is good enough.

    They had a functional jabber client too bad it's not beeing actively developed.

    I believe two things stand in the way of mozilla domination.

    1) IM integration.
    2) Network install with the ability to override user prefs and install plug ins for all users in one shot.

    Make that happen and you'll see corporations start to migrate to mozilla wholesale.

    Mozilla spellchecker.

    1) Set google as your default search engine.
    2) Type message
    3) Hit preview on slashdot.
    4) Hightlight suspicious word.
    5) right click and do the google search on the word.
    6) C & P the right spelling. ...

    Profit!!

    Seriously though it would be cool to have it.

    Open up preferences in mozilla. Go to appearance->colors and choose "Use my chosen colors, ignoring the colors and background image specified".

    Under privacy and security->Images turn off images.

    Voila a superfast browser a-la lynx or netscape 3.x but with HTML support.

    If you want you can even specify a black background and white text ;)

    Here is a neat mozilla trick.

    1) Set google as your default search.

    2) Highlight any word on a page and right click.

    3) Choose web search for "Word I Just Highlighted"

    Voila a google search.

    BTW moz1.5 has a spell checker and 1.4 users can install one here

    Mozilla has so many ways to have fun there is never any need to use IE. Have you played around with profiles yet?

    Of course it does. The GPL is wholly dependent on copyright. The FSF owns the copyright to millions of line of code and so do other programmers. If the GPL is ruled illegal then they will exercize that copyright and either prevent people from stealing the code or come up with a different licence.

    You are talking about the malloc code that was only used on MIPS processors right? Anybody running linux on intel chips does not have to worry about that bit of code, it's not in their kernel.

    Why install two programs when one will do. For me I prefer a one package install that gives me email (imap over SSL rocks!) browsing and an occational IRC chat. Too bad the jabber client looks like it's been abandoned.

    If Mozilla picked up the jabber client again and made it easy to deploy to a hundred users at once they would have a great corporate tool on their hands.

    About two years ago I read a pundit (I don't remember who) who said "Linux will collapse Unix into itself" like a black hole.

    He should have said "linux will collapse all operating systems into itself" because it will.

    A wise CEO would take the money and put it into an escrow account.

    Once the trial started he can see how things are going. If it looks like SCO will not only win on the IBM contract issue but also will invalidate the GPL and turn over all Linux code to SCO then you can pay at that time or start switching to freebsd.

    Remember you will only be obligated to pay if SCO can claim ownership of Linux as a derivative product. Even if they invalidate the GPL they will somehow have to prove that they own the code the other people wrote and can charge for it.

    Now the chances of this happening is pretty much close to zero even if the judge is a total dolt so what will happen is that you will collect interest on your money and cash out when the trial ends.

    Another strategy might be to pay the fee and sue SCO after they lose the case but by then they probably won't have any money left.

    My point was this.

    When Linux got a toehold in Mexico at least one Mexican emerged who ended up making a huge difference in the OSS world. If OSS gains a toehold in Brazil then the possibility exists for more people Miguel to emerge and make contributions. Last I checked the population of Brazil was about twice Mexicos.

    I am afraid I did not keep up on that issue. Either way I think it's inevitable that they will switch to OSS. If not this year then next or the one after that. It would have been better if it was sooner but what the hell rome wasn't built in a day.

    We are also ruthless don't forget that. Lots of times hard working people will draw the line when the choice is between making more money for yourself or acting morally. The US as a country and most Americans would rather make money. Ask all your friends "would you kill somebody for a million dollars" and most would will say "sure".

    As Americans we see out highest calling the drive to make more money everything else comes second. Whether it's family, community, environment, or god forbid the rest of the world.

    I don't know what Miguel had to do with any of that other then maybe lobbying for it.

    I was talking about Miguel's contribution to making the world a better place to live by doing what he is good at which is coding his ass off everyday. The fact that Mexico city is run by corrupt officials (surprise!) has nothing to do with his contribution to you, me and the rest of the open source world.

    BTW What do you mean "the linux guys screwed it up?" It sounds like the pigs lined up at the trough and started bribing officials to me. This happens in the US too.

    The US has an abundance of natural resources. It has lots of trees, minerals, fertile soil and water. Granted all those resources are being abused but there is enough left to last for at least another generation if not two. If we cut back even a little on consumption they might last for decades. Most of the rest of world has already eaten through it's natural resources and will be buying them from us for a long time.

    Combine that with the enourmous amount of captial that has accumulated in this country and you will realize that we will not be lining up for handouts anytime soon.

    That is not to say however that our standard of living will not decrease. It most likely will decrease a little bit but the change is more likely to effect your grandchildren then yourself.

    Anything that adds to the userbase helps linux. More users mean more and better drivers and less IE only web site. Also some small percentage of those users will actually contribute back. If they spawn another Miguel or two the world would be a better place.

    Read this article about the shcool system in shanghai. MS did an audit and then try to bully them into buying more office licences. The school system instead chose to actually remove office from it's systems and go with a competing product locally made in china. Here is a quote.

    The move to snub Microsoft comes after the software giant asked the Shanghai Education Commission to buy licenses for the office suite on every school computer. Antipiracy officials earlier raided several schools in the city for using pirated versions of the software, according to the report.

    In this case they did not go with open source but the competing product cost half as much.

    People all over the world are getting a clue except the American PHBs who are not only sticking with MS but some are actually paying licencing fees to SCO.

    Makes you wonder.

    First of all you don't know who is in Cuba. It could be anybody. It could be taliban, it could be al quada or it could be some poor baker who gfot caught in a sweep. You don't know their names, their nationalities, their crimes, their ages, nothing. You don't even know exactly how many people there are there. You know even less about the concentration camps in afghanistan and quatar. You are blissful in your ignorance.

    Secondly you keep skirting the real issue. Why deny people POW status in the first place? Why torture people in the first place? Is that a way for a civilized nation to act? Would Jesus have approved of torturing people? Would Jesus have locked up people in cages for years and injected them with drugs?

    I asked Jesus and you know what he said? He said he didn't approve of powerful nations invading weaker ones. He also said that he did not approve of torture. I then asked him if it was right to lock people up in chain link cages with no beds, walls or roofs. He also did not approve of this kind of treatment.

    Maybe Jesus told you that it's OK to kill and torture people and to lock them up in small cages I don't know.

    What did christ say about invading countries, what did he say about caging people up and torturing them? I am sure he was all for war and torture.

    Should a civilized country treat all combatants with the highest regard for human rights or the lowest? Should poor people being invaded be able to defend themselves without being called illegal comabatants and tortured because they can not afford uniforms or may not be part of an organized militia.
