During your lecture at Berkeley I remeber asking what you thought of python. You replied "there were better languages thirty years ago." Obviously you meant lisp, widely regarded as a practical and popular tool for designing web sites.:-)
> I have never, in my life, gotten a satisfactory sunset picture until this camera!
Let me guess, you just pointed at the sun/horizon and pushed the button, yes? You should try pointing at a different spot in the sky, one with a more 'average' brightness. Then push the button halfway to lock the metering, point at the sun, and click. That way you sunsets will contain more than just black silhouettes.
> Very few individuals get prints larger than 6x4.
Nobody gets prints larger than 6x4. At least not the whole roll. But when I take that ONE photo that's really good, I want to make it big ansd hang it on the wall.
I drew some holograms by hand. They were simple geometric shapes at approx 10 lines per inch. It actually worked quite well. Sort of like really low res white light holos.
I just picked up a canon rebel 2000 (analog) and a 50mm/1.8 lens. I'll bet my camera can take higher resolution pictures than the D1 and in general 'better' quality pictures with good slide film. On the other hand the D1 can probably take bursts faster and probably has a faster/smarter AF. But my camera+lens weighs 17 ounces. And the whole thing costed about $350. Bwaahahaha.
There are two ways to approach this problem. We could do what's best for me (Ryan) or we could do what's best for "society" (ie most efficient global resource usage). I suppose we could do what's best for them, but that's just the first case as seen from the other end of the stick.
1 What's best for Ryan. Starving people in deserts have negligible impact on my life. I wouldn't have known they exist were it not for television. It would be best for me to spend my money on things that impact my life. Verdict: ignore 'em.
2 What's best for "society." If you live in a desert you cannot grow food (that's why it's a desert). So we must either (a) move food to the people -or- (b) move the people to food. Obviously moving the people is far more resource efficient than moving their food (and their children's food, etc). Verdict: relocate poeple to non-desert areas.
Don't bitch to me about my cars if you want to ship food thousands of miles. If I start driving three thousand miles to go to the grocery store THEN you can tell me to stop polluting. Otherwise shut up.
Well, sure. My NT box (NT40/1381) was actually quite stable, but my win95 box shat itself daily. I was using it as a development system and it didn't seem to like that:) But still, windows has worked long and hard to earn itself a horrible reputation.
Note: I would've liked to use NT for dev work but it didn't support the pc cameras I needed.
If hardware makers are gonna exploit the Malaysians, let the Malaysians import region 1 dvds!! Eat that, multinational corporate scum!!! Death to the double standard!!!!!!
My "little idealogical corner" is more or less libertarian. I'm not a parent, I'm a twenty year old college student.
I'm not trying to "define the middle by the extremes." I certainly do not believe that these pictures represent average net content of average net porn. I simply suggest that these pictures are something I would not want my kids to see. Furthermore, I do believe there exists "much, much worse things on the net." I wouldn't want my kids to see any of that either.
I think my examples show that there are things on the net that most parents would not want their young kids to see. [accurate] filtering software would be a solution to this problem.
BTW, logging and other after-the-fact monitoring software won't do much good for these cases.
How could a parent explain these pictures to a kid? "That man got shot in the head with a rifle. But don't worry sweetie, no one will shoot you in the head."
These pictures would have given me nightmares a decade ago. There really isn't anything a parent can do to erase these images from the child's mind. Yes the world is a bad place, but third graders shouldn't have to scared that they will end up in one of those pictures.
I getting real tired of hearing people say "it's just naked people fucking, why should we need to filter that?" And "let kids see sex, it's not unhealthy." I spent about ten miutes gathering a few pictures that you might not want your kids to see. Disturbing pictures that might very well cause emotional trauma. If I could find these pictures in ten minutes, you can imagine that much, much worse things exist on the net.
Note: these are very disturbing pictures, you DON'T want to see them. Do yourself a favor and skip the link.
You're thinking of Amdahl's Law (and you're right).

So, what do you really think of python + zope?

But I only care about MY computer, not those 9 others that don't have usb.

On the other hand, photocd prices are nasty.

The pro image blows away the digital. The digital image just blows. He's probably at 2.8, you're at 11 or worse.
The pro took a picture of a football player.
You took a picture of blue bleachers.
Ryan
What the FUCK is a 'zebrachrome?'
I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and assume it's a witty reference to Art Wolfe's exploits in photoshop. Really quite funny.
On the other hand, you might be referring to ilfochrome prints, previously known as cibachromes or just cibas.
Nothing beats a ciba for quality and long term stability (except maybe some BW stuff). It'll outlast your slides.

Please reboot for the changes to take effect.

Oh shit! My nuke missed by 100 meters. Damn!
Ahhh! I'm melting. Melting! Ahhh!
BTW, I have denim curtains to keep the sunlight out of my room. Really.

Perhaps you meant 18 billion gigs (2^64).
Searching a 64 bit address space takes twice as long as searching a 32 bit one.
Not as bad as you thought, eh?

You're right, netscape blow dead goats. We're working on a replacement.

If these are the same people that think it's normal to have their computer crash twice a day, yes. They have been brainwashed.

Sam Beckett: never, *ever* post physics stuff again. Ever.

How? Third graders don't start wars. Or do you think the leaders of countries have never seen people maimed and killed?
Ryan
Yeah!!! Globalization, whoop!!!!!

All the pictures were from www.rotten.com and should be blocked by any filter. The img tags on my page link to the pictures on rotten's servers.

What's wrong with multithreading in an interpreted language? It's useful for all the same reasons it's useful in C. You seem confused...
