It doesn't matter. The software's out there, it's open source, and they can't get rid of it or even shut down the network. That's one of the main benifits of being a true, noncentralized p2p system.
They say they always draw purple lines. But what's to keep them from including backdoors to just change links? They could even include a back door to change everyone's settings remotely, by having IE check M$'s site on startup.

GIMP And OS X

The GIMP runs on Win32 and that's about as far from *nix as you can get.
Actually, WinNT/2000 is (theoretically) POSIX compliant. Also, Windows has the cygwin tools to ease porting.
Meanwhile, OS 9 not only has a completely different API but also a different processor architecture and no gcc.
Do you happen to know anything about the status of any potential replacements? I always hear about how much X sucks. I would think that replacing it would be a big priority if it sucks so much. Are there replacements in the works that are taking a long time, or does nobody want to work on a replacement yet because it wouldn't be worth the effort/investment yet, or what?
Then how'd you get RedHat? You don't need to buy FreeBSD, you can download it. Even on a modem connection, you can download gargantuan files if you leave your computer on for a few nights in a row and use wget.
They only say that because they haven't yet made a shockwave plugin for Linux, and the entire site depends on the shockwave plugin - so getting around their system wouldn't help you anyway.
If you use Active Desktop on Windows 98/ME/NT/2000, IE's rendering engine displays your desktop when you boot up, so it's already initialized when you start the browser.
The DMA says that opt-in increases the likelihood of identity theft. What about all the people who go through your mail looking for credit-card offers?
I'd say about 15% of ./ viewers use IE, out of which about half won't upgrade because of smart tags, XP, moral reasons, etc.
I think they use GTK under Linux.
Except that Mozilla doesn't have the benefit of being included as the default browser with 95% of the desktop machines on the planet.
I find that hard to believe, is there is no shockwave plugin for any UNIX OS. Only flash, which is what you have.
Shockwave.com requires a shockwave plugin. Since there is no such thing for Linux (only a flash plugin), Linux users can't view the site.
Maybe he does.
You could use Mozilla patched to disable this option.

If you define "rich" as being a millionaire, you'd need twenty million .doc files that are not Word documents. That's not exatly a low number

Or you can just download the debs for X from Debian's web site without upgrading your whole distro. This gets a little tedious though...

There's the Berlin project and the Y Window System, but neither is currently ready for general use.
Can it change resolution on the fly too? Or is that impossible in X?

I think there is a kernel-based version of Apache somewhere out there.
AOL's next-generation browser is Mozilla. That's on ereason why Mozilla is so important.
Netscape was written from scratch by the authors of NCSA Mosiac, so they probably do share similar code.

Ever seen fairtunes.com? They let you give money to your favorite artists without going through the record companies.

If you get a G4 Cube, you don't even need a fan.
