Quick... what are the zeroes of 4x^2-6x+1? If your math teacher never made you memorize the quadratic formula, you can't solve that (unless you want to go through deriving the quadratic formula for every problem you do).
Now, you do have a point. I know plenty of people who have no clue what the quadratic formula is, because it's programmed into their calculator. Typing something in once doesn't necessarily prove that you know it. But don't degrade "rote" learning; it can be a very valuable technique.
Well, the average/.ing high school student probably isn't representative of HS students as a whole. The presence of a few articulate high-schoolers doesn't imply that the schools are teaching writing well overall. As a high-schooler myself, I can guarentee you that they're not.
I'm not gonna claim that GDS is perfect, but you're not using it for its intended purpose. If you search for "important project" you should get all documents related to said project, including those in a folder with that name. As for your complaints 2,3, and 4, all of those can be done easily with standard Windows search tools. If what you want to search a filesystem for a filename, GDS isn't for you. GDS is designed to search the content of documents and return those relevent to your query.
You must not have a good vocabulary. "Metric", aside from referring to a specific system of measurement, can refer generally to any system of measurement.
It's a lot easier for me to see your password on your monitor and remember it than to buy and install a $100 keylogger (and that's for PS/2, USB keyloggers are pretty much impossible to find).
Yes, people can crack your machine even if you don't flaunt your passwords, but it's much simpler (and hence more likely) when you do.
From my perspective, terrorism isn't a problem. I'm not only still alive, but I feel comfortable and things look bright and happy outside.
Health problems caused by air pollution kill more people every year than terrorism ever has. Maybe you, personally, haven't died yet, but thousands of people die every year due to various lung diseases aggravated by pollution. Many more suffer severe asthma and allergies. It's not the immediate end of the world, but pollution is definitely a problem.
Just look how the Clintons had ended terrorism (by ignoring it), solved all the Israel/Palestine problems (by making Arafat the most frequent guest at the White House), and was always 100% honest.
As opposed to Bush, who's "ended" terrorism (by increasing it), "solved" the Israel/Palestine problems (by ignoring them and letting the violence escalate), and has lied about issues infinitely more important than his personal life.
You recommended a solution that is pretty much inferior to the parent in every way. That's why you were modded down. Since there's no "-1, Stupid" mod, the moderator had to settle for the next best thing.
I think that 'u' or 'ur' can sometimes be justified. When you're playing an online game, for example, abbreviating can save valuable time, and the message still gets across just fine.
Now, on the other hand, anyone who uses such language in email or (worse) printed documents should be summarily shot.
No, because increasing your happiness in that fashion would decrease the overall happiness of others (because less money would be spent on other programs). In contrast, society has come to a general consensus that educating people is one of the best ways to ensure that they can get good jobs, and the corresponding new cars and houses.
You can buy non-Apple PowerPC machines and run OSX using MOL, or run it in a PearPC-style emulator. You can also buy an older Mac that didn't come with OSX.
Also, even if you buy a Mac with OSX, you could still consider yourself to be not paying for the OS if you pirate the upgrades (which are effectively whole new OSs).
I would care. Hacking in online games is not only stupid (it destroys the challenge of the game), but it ruins the experience for other players. A person has to have a certain degree of asshole-ness to do something like that.
A used PC at that price is no big deal. If it was new, whoever was selling it was losing money.

That's not a good thing if you're doing them free, as the parent was.
It's throttled to one change/second, which is no faster than many normal blinking Christmas lights.

The speed, the presentation, and the (missing) ranking by relevance.
I think the parent was responding to the summary's comment about find and grep, not the Yahoo tool.

Getting there, on the other hand...
It probably means that the Linux version is statically linked to every library it could possibly need.
Rerun the perl script.

Yes. The easiest way at the moment is iPod Linux.

Right, but you'd think they could fix their own software to work with their own OS.
How do you think people get decent jobs and extra money? Certainly not by being dumb and lazy (with the notable exception of a certain US president).

No serious scholar would use Encarta (or any encyclopedia) as a reference source either.
Wow. You just made a broad, powerful statement completely un-backed-up by any facts. Care to elaborate?
