    Palm devices sleep better than Pocket PCs, they don't drain the battery as much while in sleep mode.

    All right, I'll admit I'm a little biased (*cough* I work at Palm *cough*), but I think the best bang for your buck right now is the m125. It's pretty much an m500 without the rechargeable battery. $250 gets you a device with PalmOS 4.0 and an SD card slot. If colour and/or mp3 capability are important to you then Sony's Clie is a nice little device too.

    Looks like the feds are considering setting government standards, abcnews article is here. I'm not sure how helpful government standards could be, but I think I could welcome them. I'm sure that if my toaster lit on fire as often as my windows box crashes the government would do something about it, so why not hold software companies more accountable.

    The war is on the terrorists groups, not the Afghans. Haven't you been paying attention to Bush? It'll become a war on the Afghans if they don't give up Bin Laden after Bush offers proof of his guilt, but until then they are not the target of this war. (just really close to the target)

    All the comments I looked at were very pro-microsoft in the talkback section of the zdnet article. They're pretty funny to read, is Microsoft's PR group posting these or are there really this many clueless people reading zdnet?

    Among my favourite is one comment that says that microsoft is targetted because it's a popular server OS as opposed to linux which barely has any share of the desktop market.

    Kabul, the capitol of Afghanistan just experience some explosions about 15 minutes ago (it's all over CNN), they're speculating right now about whether it could be a US retaliation or not.

    Hold on there cowboy, you're talking crazy metric talk there. In the world of bits and bytes isn't little m = 1000 and big M = 1024 (or was it the other way around, I can't remember). Maybe I'm the one who's crazy. In fact, maybe I should stop posting to slashdot whenever I've spent more than 8 hours in one day working on nothing but pointers and memory.

    What I got from the article is that extending the length of the aircraft widens the shockwave of the sonic boom. I've never heard of sonic booms being prevented...

    I don't know about Palm, their finances aren't so hot, they talked about spinning the OS division in a separate company and then ditched it when the market went south, and there's a class action lawsuit against them for stock manipulation. I got a letter about it last night.

    Palm isn't in the embedded business, Audrey was a 3com thing (who owned Palm at the time). BeOS and BeIA aren't designed for PDA's and even if they were, they wouldn't fit into Palm's vision.

    I'll buy a copy of Linux on CD about once a year, but I usually buy it just to put some money back into Linux (and for the pretty CDs). I've been doing the same thing with OpenBSD ever since I started playing with it last year. Most of the time though I just download linux (all right, I bought a french linux mag once because it came with Mandrake 7.2, but it also came with a whole crapload of good stuff too).

    In one case : Some people spend their lives working for other people, one the sole fact that the latter own the means of production
    In the other case: Using (whatever 'using' means) ideas,art, whatever that someone else has made (whatever 'made' means) amounts to taking advantage of that person's work without due compensation

    Sorry, I don't like your starting points here, your logic is kind of fuzzy. The first case is an argument against a class based system, ideally to have it replaced with a system where 'property' is shared amongst all. The second statement is about a means of protecting property from others, individual ownership of property is usually limited in a socialist-based system. Even though there are vague similiarities between the 2 cases, I don't think you have enough there to argue that IP laws and communism are similiar.

    This looks like a great mp3 player, but I don't know if I'd consider it a PDA. All it has built into it is an LCD screen and an audio plug. It only stores digital pictures, it doesn't display them. I want a PDA that lets me enter notes/etc anytime, anywhere (let me spell it out personal digital a-s-s-i-s-s-t-a-n-t).
    Sorry to sound like a troll, and I wouldn't be surprised if I got modded down but this sounds like they combined a zip drive (with a big disk stuck in it) with an mp3 player.

    Alexander, Christopher A Pattern Language, ChristopherAlexander, et. al., and Timeless Way of Building -- Thinking about programs that people can actually use.

    Why would you want an architecture book in the computer section?
    This is the book that inspired the whole field of patterns and pattern languages, but it isn't a computer book.
