  1. This is interesting... on Blizzard, Bnetd Respond on Bnetd Shutdown · · Score: 1, Troll
What has Blizzard done that is so wrong? They're protecting their property. If they don't want Starcraft or Diablo played on non Battle.net servers (unless, of course, you're running over UDP or TCP), who are we to complain? They created and wrote the game, they sell the game - it's their decision how they want to handle their own property. This isn't a case of fair use ala Napster - you bought a license to use this game not the game itself. Blizzard can decide how they want to administer their property.

    I. for one, will still play Starcraft or Diablo and judge any new products as they come out on their merit. If I decide that server emulation would be a good idea at that time, then I will complain and contact Blizzard. But, for me personally? I've no issue with Blizzard cracking down on BnetD

Seems to me that /. could offer a side service of the "best" job search sites out there. I have to admit, I spent a lot of time between /., TechTV and job sites when I was laid-off last year. Maybe an ongoing fourm where readers can discuss the pros and cons of various sites, and maybe rate them, would be useful. I know I spent a few weeks discovering different sites all around the net.

In the end, my best leads came from a contact I had at Apple, an online newspaper ad, and a new job opening at my former employer. I ended up at the latter and, I have to admit, I'm one of the ones who voted "Yes" up above.

Depends on how you define geek. I go off of the Douglas Coupland definition in Microserfs, which essentially says you are a geek if: A) you have tech knowledge and aren't just posing; and B) you have a social life. Nerds and dorks (or dweebs - can't remember) follow, with nerds having tech skills but no life, and dorks posing as nerds (again with no life).

Ms. Fent seems to fit the definition of geek, as does Taco, IMHO.

I think the vast majority of you are going to be surprised...

It would help if you weren't all cynics and could actually enjoy fare made for children. I personally think it is rather sad that people expect Lucas to push out things stronger than he did 20 years ago. To say that Taco has to face his fears is to not pay attention to what's happening here. He could have easily turned comments off for this story - and we would all know whether or not he was rejected. 250K people being exposed to your proposal takes a lot of balls, IMHO. Big ones. BT might have an argument with merit, but I'm doubting it.

HTML's roots are in SGML, the markup language primarily used by tech writers to create modular documents from multiple sources (ie, a car manual and related sales material would pull from the same source). A hyperlink is a logical extension once you place a markup language in a networked environment - by jumping from page to page you're, in essence, creating a modular "book" just as a tech writer could create a car manual.

Again, there may be some merit, but precious little, IMHO...

I'm curious as to what you mean here. Apple has had the GeForce3 in the Power Macs for the past nine months (roughly), and since the blue & white G3 they've had the top of the line (or close to) ATI cards in the Power Macs (at least as an option). And, while Apple had little to do with it, 3dfx was supporting Apple with Voodoo cards from Voodoo 3 on up (I'm using a Voodoo 3 in my PM 6500).

You can't go off of the chipsets in the iMacs - the iMac was essentially a laptop with a CRT on it (now it's a laptop in a bigger package). But the G3s (after the beige boxes) and G4s (G4s especially) have always had strong card options, both at Apple and outside of it.

  11. Re:Script - director... on Episode II Gets Rave Review · · Score: 2
If you watch the excellent Biography of Lucas on A&E, you'll learn he never really liked actors - his heart was more in the editing area (he wanted to be an editor and a cameraman).

Now, I personally think that for what Lucas is doing with the SW series it works. The series is a space opera - don't even think of it as SF or you'll hurt your head. It's a fantasy told in space, end all and be all. Its roots are in the serials like Flash Gordon, which are really bad (trust me). BTW, they're from the 30s and 40s, not the 50s.

Nobody's accusing Lucas of being a good director - he's decent, nothing more. I liked TPM because I was able to bear in mind that it is Act I of a six act play (basically). Last time I looked, the first act of anything never really worked well on its own. I'm looking forward to AOTC because I realize its place in the series.

My mother and wife also look at me and call me the tallest four-year-old they've ever known when it comes to SW. Maybe it's because I can watch movies (note, I said movies, not films - I do know the difference...my minor was film studies...) and know they aren't designed to be great art. I can seperate BASEketball from Citizen Kane and enjoy both because I realize the levels they're working on...

Nothing from the SW series will match, let's say, 2001 or Blade Runner because they are more in the vein of Time Bandits, Legend or The Princess Bride (and all of them, except for ROTJ, are much better than Legend, IMHO).

In the end, it's strong moviemaking...not filmmaking.

Again, we bring the argument of CISC v. The question should be: "How fast will the system do what I need it to do?" not "How fast is the system?" I suggest taking your dream Intel box and the top Power Mac and benchmarking them - especially looking at apps like Photoshop and Mathematica under Mac OS X. It doesn't drag, even though the story could have been truncated for for a 30 minutes episode, it works nicely in the 120 minutes movie (making you think what they could have done if all the stories in the series took up 120 minutes as opposed to 30-60 minutes). What could an organizer possibly need above that? And, if you're looking at making it a desktop replacement I would again have to ask "Why?" Why would you want to replace a desktop or a laptop with something like an iPaq or Journada?

Just to let you rest assured, I am familiar with both platforms. My mother, over the holidays, won a Journada in a raffle ($2 for a Journada ain't a bad price), but the interface is sad, bulky and overredundant. She, as a veteran Windows user, has yet to find the Start menu on her own, and it took me a good five minutes. I actually had to look at the manual, which is the first time I've had to look at a manual, other than in detailed reference, in years.
