The rumour that some ebooks tried to disallow you from reading out load is an urban myth. Some ebook licenses disabled having the ebook reader speak the book for you through it's speakers (if the hardware supported it). You were still allowed to read out loud.
Haven't figured out how percentages work, have you?
Most income tax is a percentage of your "taxable" income. That means the more you make, the more you pay. The problem is, the government likes to make the rules that decide what part of your income is "taxable" in very strange and convulted ways. Generally, as you make more money, the percentage you pay goes UP. This gives the government more money, but if they set the tax rate too high they give rich people a very high incetive to become "imaginative" with determining their "taxable" income which keeps lots of accountants employed.
In my opinion, instead of lowering the overal tax rates, the government should have increased the personal tax exemption - that first part of your income which is not taxed. Raising that make a big difference (percentage wise) to low income people, but hardly affects the taxes on huge incomes.
The RIAA should be going after the individuals doing the downloading. The RIAA shouldn't be able to get anything out of the ISP's - that should the job of the police and courts. ISP's should be treated like common carriers.
Privacy is a very important part of free speech. People who have view points opposed to the government (or other powerful group) often need the cloak of anonymity to prevent unjust persecution. The protection that anonymity provides to free speech needs to be balanced with the need to catch criminals. That is why you can expect a phone call to be private, but the police can get a court order to breech your privacy. The evil DMCA has tipped the balance away from fairness and allows your right to privacy to be broken too easily.
Non-fiction that's not techie:
Biographies. Mozart has a very interesting bio, for instance.
History:
Guns of August by Barbara W. Tuchman . Absolutely brilliant history of the events leading up to WWI and to the start of trench warefare.
Making of the Atom bomb by Richard Rhodes.
Anarchy, State and Utopia by Robert Nozick - best book I've read about anarchy, if a bit too deferential to Locke.
And you can't actually flog an "idea". Unless you want to work on exactly what the big guys want you to work on it is very tough to get a publisher to pick you up.
It is very expensive to make a modern game with great art, huge levels, original music, etc...
The big companies have the money to pay everyone to work on the game. The lone guy in his basement just doesn't have the resources to make games that have a lot of art, music, etc... The small group can still make certain games that are not quite so captital intensive to create, but it is then hard to market the thing even if you do ever finish it. The sequel to Stars! is languishing because the developers can't get any backing to finish it and they had a somewhat successful game under their belts already. Its a tough business these days.
Aerodynamics controls your top speed on a long straight highway. Lots of horsepower is only to get you up to highway speeds in a reasonable time. Once up to speed the engine only has to overcome rolling resistance and air resistance. you you are very patient, and have a very low air-restant car you can reach 100mpg with much less than 90hp.
The aerodynamics of the car sets its stop speed. Once you get going it's the wheels rolling resistance and the air-resistance that the engine has to overcome to reach its top speed. you only need huge amounts of horsepower to have large acceleration. If you are very, very patient, I'm sure you can get to 100mph with much less horsepower.
How long ago was that? I'm curious if it still that bad.
There were NO girls in most of CS courses in the mid 1980's that I took, but now where I work about half the work-force is female. Most of the women worked their way up into IT internally, it's a large firm, by way of clerical, key punch, operator, programmer (mainly main-frame), then on to unix and PC stuff as the technology entered the company.
Well, even if the Sun instantly was moving at the speed of light, it still wouldn't catch UP with light or gravity, it would still take 8 minutes or so to reach the Earth. And all the associated relativistic effects are beyond my knowing off the top of my head.
If you use trig and get certain numbers for your triangle, you can then use a ruler and compass to confirm, or disprove, trig.
This gravity wave experiment could have gotten a value that is way off the value of c which would entail taking a good hard look at GE. Of course, it would be nice to have a method to more directly measure the 'speed of gravity', but we can't yet.

The holy free market should settle this issue of game programmers wages, not the lick spittle spawn of Satan that is current government of the USA. Beware false prophets wielding bills that hide the face of the mega-corp that perverts true and holy free market forces with campaign contributions. Repent, and feel the freedom that follows when you shuck the shackles of minimum wage laws. Rejoice as the free market rewards the rightous with a fair wage, and a fair return on investment. Smite the wicked that despoil the annual report with lies and deceptive accounting practices.
You get the government you deserve - even more so when you do not vote at all.
How the heck will writing to Congress do help programmers? Write a law forcing companies to pay them better?
And the top flight game programmers DO make a good living, but like any proffession, entry level people do not make the big bucks that the more senior people earn. Also, there is great deal of competition for the entry level game programming jobs which depresses the starting wage.
There was no universe, no time, "before" the big bang. In some sense, it doesn't make sense to talk about before the big-bang as there wasn't anything. It's like asking what is outside the universe. There is no outside - the universe is all we can possiblely get to (that we know about now).
If your kids are old enough to go to their friends on their own, then they are old enough to follow the rules when out of sight of their parents. If you can't trust your kids by the time they are 11 or 12, you have bigger problems to deal with than video games. I don't let my kids play any of the GTA games (its the concept more than anything else that offends me), but if they play it once or twice at a friends house it isn't the end of the world. The reason I don't let them play the game is to reinforce to them what is right and wrong. I don't think the game will "corrupt" my kids if they play it a couple of times. The important thing is that they know I disaprove of the game, and that the actions it depicts are "bad".
It is the job of parents, not the government, or even the mighty Walmart, to control children's access "inappropriate" games.
Too many people want the government to solve all their problems instead of taking responsibility for themselves and their charges. This, of course, leads to the government taking more and more power, and regulating things you never wanted them to regulate.
What planet are you from? The USA has large numbers of troops, a big airbase, etc... in Saudi-Arabia. Its there to protect the Saudi's.
The USA shouldn't have meddled at all. Communism was doomed to fail because it doesn't work.
Sure, it easy to be pissed at the USA, but lately the USA seems to have been working very hard at pissing people off. Canadians are used to the elephant next door rolling over in its sleep and breaking things, but we don't like the elephant charging at us with its tusks (just economically speaking here).

747 prices range from 70 to 250 million (frieght only versions seems to be less).
The a380 airbus lists for around 230 million (most people think this price is subsidised by gov in Europe)
A brand new Peterbilt tractor is about $90,000 (much less than $500,000!!), and a trailer is only $30,000.
So... $35 million isn't a bad price for a large jet, but it maybe a bit high for a small one.
All you people who modded this price list up, should have a look at Google first.
6. Hyprocrisy. Say you are for free-markets, but slap huge tarrifs on Canadian Softwood, everyone's steel, and all sorts of European goods because of BANANAS!
7. Say you support democracy, but then prop up, or install murderous dictatorships all over the world. Any Americans notice that the Saudi's are NOT a democracy?
The USA has made all sorts of blunders, but none of this excuses the criminal acts of terrorists. BUT, the USA should pull its head out of its righteous ass and spend some time examining why some parts of the world hate it, and most of the world is unhappy with the way it is acting.
Can someone explain why you need repo men in the USA? Up here in Canada a sherrif (not at all like the USA Sherrif, kind of like a working for the courts directly police) will knock on your door and ask for the keys, and failing that just get the car towed. Also, in general, a simple phone call from the bank is all it takes to get the car returned. Usually the owner would sell the car to pay off the loan before reaching this point if they can't make payments.

This GameGuild thingy might be a good thing to do AFTER you get a normal CS degree. I'd be leary of hiring someone with such a narrow education.
