  1. Don't Forget on Microdrone Spy Planes · · Score: 1

Remember that these are a lot more than R/C planes (on the inside). They rely on GPS and fly to given waypoints automatically, then return to the launch position or some other predetermined spot. These micro-UAVS commonly use solid state gyroscopes, plus light weight, minature video cameras and transmitters. Not terribly complicated stuff on its own, but put it together in a light-weight package with a decent range, and it's pretty impressive.

If you have every seen many of these designs, you'll notice that many of them use a flying wing configuration (like the B-2). This allows them to have a smaller overall size. Make the chord length a little larger and use special airfoils, and there you have it.

  2. Engineering practices on NASA Finds Critical Assembly Fault in Shuttle · · Score: 4, Insightful

In engineering, it's usually good practice to design somthing that only assembles one way. That way, whoever is assembling it (no matter how intelligent they are) can only install the component the way it was meant to be.

It's strange and somewhat disconcerting that this was not the case for this shuttle component, but I haven't seen the part in question.

  3. Re:I play it this way: on Science of the coin-toss: Bias in Heads-or-Tails · · Score: 1

If you're talking about Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, then there is a strange, existential tendency for heads. What was it? Like, 137 consecutive coin tosses- all heads?

"Eternity is a terrible thought. I mean, where's it going to end?"

  4. Re:Practicality of the design? on Fuelless Flight with Air Submarine? · · Score: 1

You can't scale a plane off a linear dimension. It doesn't matter how long the wings are, you also have to think about wing area. Saying 7.5ft/person is meaningless. What you should have talked about is something called wing loading: weight/area.

Remember, aircraft are three dimensional. A full scale prototype of this could carry more people since there is not a linear relationship.

I'm very skeptical of the whole thing. Plus, what kind of climb rate would this thing have?

  5. Re:Emotional Horror on One-Way Ticket to Mars? · · Score: 1

Yes, but I say send convicts. This way the one-way trip doesn't seem so in-humane. Maybe Mars can be the new Austraila.

The first step to Mars is definitely the Moon. Using the moon as a launch base and fueling station makes everything more practical and efficient.

  6. Re:Bye Bye Airplanes on Japanese Train Sets A Speed Record Of 581 kph · · Score: 1

How are free roaming planes MORE dangerous?

A terrorist could just sit off the tracks and launch an RPG and really destroy the train.

It takes a lot more to knock a plane out of the sky or hijack it. I think you have your comment reversed.

  7. The truth about RPN on Recommendations for RPN Calculators? · · Score: 2, Informative

I hope when he wrote- "Do companies still make calculators?", he meant 'still make RPN calculators.'

Hmm, I wonder how many of these people exist...

  9. SST possibilities on Supersonic Flight Without The Sonic Boom · · Score: 3, Insightful

Unfortunately, the article never reveals how much they have reduced the sonic boom.

But, this could be great for supersonic transports if the design technolgy is used in future designs. It would mean that we could have supersonic flights from NY to LA lasting only a couple hours! If the noise was reduced enough, the FAA would let them fly over populated areas (like the continental US)

  10. eBay policy on Testing The Right To Resell Downloaded Music · · Score: 5, Informative

Here is what eBay says about such sales:

    Downloadable Media Policy

eBay prohibits the listing of items or products to be delivered electronically through the Internet.

    Examples
A copy of a software program which the successful high bidder can download from your Web site
Music or video files that you will deliver through a peer to peer file-sharing community or network
A copy of a downloadable eBook
A secret URL address where the high bidder can download "freeware" or "shareware" software programs

Doesn't seem like this is okay with eBay.

  11. Re:Why not? on Congress Asks Universities To Enforce Copyrights · · Score: 1

At my college we have a weekly bandwidth restriction of 1.5Gb for downloads. There are various penalties for going over the limit (worst being no internet for your dorm computer for the rest of the semester). The only people who actually get close are those who are sharing files.

The nice thing is they don't monitor content, but if they wanted to stop people from using P2P programs, they should cut back on the bandwidth limit. Normal web surfing does not consume that kind of bandwidth.

  12. Milk it for what it's worth! on Mir 2 · · Score: 1

Forget about research and all that stuff, we need to capitalize off these Russian flying dumpsters! Some sort of world-wide lotto needs to be set up, if MIR2 hits your target in the ocean, you win a whole load of money. We should just crash these things for fun!
