  1. Re:Worthless store on Wal-Mart Ditches DRM, Keeps Censorship · · Score: 1

People.. The decision to Not do something yourself is not Censorship in the context we are talking about.

If you want to look at it the way you just have put it, then I censor myself all the time by not saying curses during Board Meetings. In fact, EVERY group, person, or thing Censor's to some extent. Therefore the word is meaningless.

We are talking about true Censorship, the kind that would come up in a "Your Rights Online". Bigger stakes, and I think about half the people on here agree, a different definition.

Because the Disney Channel puts out shows for kids, does that mean they are guilty of Censorship or of choice.

Everyone saying that walmart is doing something wrong, rather than just something they disagree with, are actually arguing against personal choice, which individuals that own companies still have.

  2. Re:Worthless store on Wal-Mart Ditches DRM, Keeps Censorship · · Score: 1

I understand that you dont have a choice if Walmart has a Monopoly in the 'small town' (something the small town does to itself since they shop there instead of the other stores that are there).

But does that mean that they are censoring Airplanes because Walmart chooses not to sell them and there is no-where else in the small town.

What we are seeing in the 'small town' is the result of putting all your eggs in one basket, not censorship. Walmart is not saying you cant buy those CD's, they are just saying "We wont sell them to you". Just because a company gets as big as walmart, they dont inherit the responsibility of carrying ALL things.

Besides, there are always other options.. Internet, Mail Order, drive 30 miles to the next town.

I dont like the store either, but this is NOT really censorship.
As a store that is owned by someone(s), managed by someone(s), they have the right to decide what it is that they will and wont sell. Its ashame that our society doesn't care that these are not the true songs that were released, but
    1) Walmart has the Marketshare
    2) Record Companies want to be in those locations
    3) Record Companies bend to walmart.

Its not like they dont have a choice. And obviously its what many people want. If you want to call something worthless, call the Artist that allows their intellectual property (which they have most likely sold to the Label) to be modified from its orig. artistic form, Assuming they arent just out for money as well.

I'm sorry, but its you that is not looking at the real world. Your proposing that patents are a bad idea if I follow you. The truth is that most of the time, Patents do more good than bad. I know inventors that made alot of money because they came up with a new idea and patent'd it and then made use of it. In MOST cases (Not all of course, and Slashdot reports on the ones that are the minority because its news) when a big company wants to have it, they will buy the rights to use it. Its cheaper than having lawyers go after them.
Patents can protect. They can also be used abusively.

For example, the Drug companies. I hate those guys, I think they do abuse patents and over-charge to 3rd world countries. But if you think they would pour 3 billion into research for a drug with the knowledge the moment that they come up with it it will be made by 20 other companies for the same price or cheaper, your crazy. If Patents were taken away, then it would be only the Goverment and non-prof. groups doing that reasearch.

This is not a Black and White topic. The only issue is how insane SOME patents are. The value of a Patent system is undeniable. Some Patents are crap tho..

Well this is still in debate.
Since it is impossible to "transport" an object in that sence, no one has yet to be able to say that it is instantanius.. and Magnatism is definitely not the same way.. I believe its logical to assume that Gravity is Not Instantanious.. Example.. The stars as we see them in the universe are not actually where we see them.. we see them as they were several to hundreds to Thousands of years ago.. Yet if we calculate where gravity is interacting, its where we see it..

There is a study being done now I believe that is designed to find out if gravity travels instantaniously or if its trackable.. but as a logical person, I find it much more likely that at best it travels faster than we can track, not instantaniously. Much the way Light was thought to travel instantaniously before it was clocked at really really fast.

What needs to be done is more people seriously thinking of DRM models that are good but flexable on a Personal level.

Its going to come, one way or another, so the best course of action is to attempt to develope one that is "Fair". If it means that you cant send your DVD you ripped over the net, Fine, you cant do it, but maybe it can be written so that you can Fairly RIP your DVD to a Video Disk that you can view on your LAPtop that for some reason doesnt have a DVD player.

Are there any Open Source projects thinking about DRM? I dont know how it would work but it must be possible. Plus, with so many companies looking towards Linux for embedded players and such, if an Open Source alternative for DRM came out that at least satisfied whatever stupid laws may eventually get passed, then its just another victory for community software evolution and a loss to Microsoft's plans rule the media future

Actually, your messing up the conclusions..
As you said, Ad campaigns tend to coincide with a new product. But if its a new product, how do people find out about it? um, Ads, therefore the origional point is right that sales are linked to ads..

Ads work also for name recognition.. if you really think your immune to the constant bombardment of advertisement, then ask yourself why you drink Pepsi or Coke (or their products) when there are many generic cola's that are just as good and 1/3 the price..

I personally have memories of being young and seeing Trix Ads and wanting that breakfast (though I thought the kids were racist for not letting the rabbit eat them because he wasn't a human, but that's just me).

Point is, we are influenced by our exposure to adds.. If a person is so disconnected as to not be affected psychological in any way by the exposure, then they may have issues that need to be dealt with.

Forcing a website to move is simply not a good thing. For one thing, they often have already staked out their territory and the users that use them know the address (sure you could have it redirect from old to new, but then , what is the point?).

What should be done is the creation of .prn as an option, and then the voluntary movement of adult related websites. Then give incentives to do it, Legally. For example, I feel that a lot of the content that is available on sites even before age verification is pretty explicit. So much so that I wouldn't want my 10 year old son looking at it. There are already laws (a believe) on requiring age verification, so legally go after these sites (if they are in the USA) more aggressively. However don't go after sites that have the .PRN aggressively because they already take measures to help ensure children aren't looking at their stuff (so long as a parent or guardian has set up the computer so that it wont go to .prn sites).

This of course wont full-proof the internet.. Nothing will. But it will allow government administrators to say they did something to protect our children, parents group another tool that they can feel good about, and responsible adult content providers the ability to cover their ass yet another time.

As far as the Hate groups, they shouldn't be in the .PRN group. That is not adult content. A group like the KKK's content is just, in my opinion, as bad for 30 year olds as they are for 10 year olds. If Parents want to make sure their kids aren't going to those sites, then they just have to make sure they raise their kids to be open minded and intelligent. The average 14 year old boy wants to go to www.playboy.com, Not the KKK's web site. The ones that do want to go to the KKK's site most likely have parents that don't mind and will let them in.
