wow, flutter. yep heard all that. and there are digital tools for removing that from your recordings, or for adding it to digital recordings if you really want your stuff to sound like shitty analog.

  6. Re:Albini loves magnetic tape on Why Steve Albini Still Prefers Analog Tape · · Score: 1

Albini hates being called an Engineer. He prefers the term "recordist".

Shellac, his band, takes a bit of listening to get used to. Talented musicians, but angry and drawing on a great deal of angst. He's got a killer mic collection, however, and will pretty much record anyone who will pay him to record their band.

not all engineers do due diligence when writing down notes regarding tracks. and how many mp3's have you seen with messed-up metadata?

you can add notes within protools and probably several other DAW file formats. but opening a an older daw file in a 3-version newer app is nearly impossible. thanks, Logic Pro X for returning the ability to read Logic 5 files. Now I can dump my G4.

yep, not many people have the ability to play back 78's, wire recordings, 8 tracks, minidiscs, etc.

and digital files are difficult to open from floppy diskettes, especially if the original file format is for a program that no longer exists (opcode vision for Mac OS8 anyone? how about dr T's for DOS?)

The problem is BUSING. Too many schools get suckered into providing expensive transportation for kids. Oodles of scarce dollars get sucked into the black hole called $4.80/gallon > schoolbus. If we would just stop the shell game of "magnet schools" and focus on making GOOD NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOLS then parents would be happy and schools wouldn't have to waste money on gassing up inefficient school buses.

  15. Re:why should apple steal someone's work? on Patent Suit Leads To 500,000 Annoyed Software Users · · Score: 2

um, how about Apple being the first company to successfully market a Unix-based OS to consumers? they sold shitload more computers than Sun, and there's way more OSX in use today than Ubuntu. probably because it works better, and it got started in the early 2000's.

we can also thank Apple for packaging together lots of useful features that weren't standard in the pc industry for years, such as mouse support, onboard 4-voice audio and built-in optical drives. until Windows 95, these weren't standard pc functions. and i know it was developed elsewhere, but having a 3.5" floppy drive beat the fuck out of using 5.25" disks. and working with Macs in the 1980's taught me tons about SCSI before I supported it on windows-based servers in the 1990's.

i'm so tired of all the vitriol spewed at apple for "stealing other people's work". they've innovated the hell out of the tech industry and you should be grateful you morons. just having an item or a concept isn't useful until it's affordable and easy enough for lots of people to use it without hassle.
