we're just praying for a big snowstorm to show them how shitty of an idea this is. lines go down, no voip to india to fix them. wasn't a great portion of CT out of power for over a week just a year ago?
My old company refused to sell and install Cisco products, even though they were superior to those we sold from Fortinet. Fortinet support, based on the west coast, is staffed by men with strong Russian and Korean accents which can be difficult to understand -- but not as bad as a shitty voip connection to Bangalore.
my digital audio workstation runs Logic Pro X, Pro Tools 11, and Cubase 6.5. no tablet or phone can replace the desktop, which has not only several hard disks and lots of RAM, but an operating system capable of running plugins from a variety of 3rd party sources. I'm in no position to junk this thing for whatever might happen to be "hot" in the next couple of years, because enjoy working with older versions of software which are no longer supported. IOS comes close to OSX and Windows 7 as far as being able to run basic audio and midi recording, but the musical instrument industry still hasn't completely cracked the nut on integrating hardware and software instruments, providing a comfortable recording, mixing, and mastering workflow. to my knowledge, enthusiasts like myself will still be needing enthusiast computer hardware for the foreseeable future.
10 years in the future, my scale is going to tell my refrigerator to not open the freezer "to keep that fatass away from the ice cream". so really the benevolence of thinking machines is what bugs me most.
I dunno, there's probably gazillions of parents who'd rather buy their kid a plastic phone that won't shatter or dent as easily as the 4, 4s, 5, 5s so the 5c makes a certain amount of sense to suburban moms & dads.
the improved camera is the best selling point of the 5s. it's not about pixels, it's about color matching and the 1000 variations of fill flash that will make your drunk selfies postable on the facebook.
Once 64-bit iPhones have been out for a year, Apple can dump the 32-bit support in IOS8 and pressure consumers with perfectly usable iPhone 4's and 5's to upgrade to the new 64-bit standard. No complaints from developers because hey, you've had the 5s for a whole year, motherfucker!
no, it's about kids, teens, and younger adults wanting "the fresh new", and by using different colors each release, Apple can make old models look new again, saving a TON on rejiggering the machines in the factories that make these devices. Pastel Colors is the new gold standard LOL
And fewer mistakes per batch of phones will yield higher profits on even "lower-margin" phones like the 5c -- although since plastic manufacturing is cheaper than aluminum manufacturing, the 5c may actually be a HIGHER margin phone than the 5s.
Technically, Apple never stores your fingerprint. When you train the device, it recognizes signature parts of your fingerprint, such as the location of whorls etc, and then saves that not as a photograph of your finger, but as an abstract number that corresponds to where that whorl exists on your finger. So your fingerprint is never stored, just a series of numbers that represent aspects of your fingerprint. Big difference.
Spotify pays artists the least of all online streaming services, and since I have a lot of friends who are professional musicians, I will never use Spotify. Inking a deal with Facebook just sealed the deal for me.
Apple's iTunes has not improved their Genius selection system in any obvious way since its release. I'm still waiting for it to recognize and understand my large collection of ska, reggae, trance, punk, and other music that doesn't fall under the pop or classic rock genres. That's something that Last.FM and Pandora get right -- if I select some indy rock, they won't ruin the mix by adding some Katy Perry crap to it.
Nearly all major DAWs have low-cost versions: GarageBand on OSX transfers files into Logic Pro X, Cubase & Sonar & Pro Tools also have cheaper iterations. It's nice to see Reaper meet with so much success, but there's tons of options out there, with no reason to steal.
Speaking of Logic, Apple's Logic Pro X is pretty good. I've been a longtime Logic user, since the emagic days, and expected the worst with this new version. But my first couple of recordings, the auto drummer did a great job of placing fills where I wanted -- better than some of the real drummers with whom I've worked:P
Just because you download cracked software doesn't mean you have any musical sense in your head. Recording good-sounding music requires decent mics, monitoring, mixing & production skills.
How come nobody ever blames Clear Channel for scrubbing playlists clean of talented indie artists? Less choice means less music sales; and radio programming has sucked since Clear Channel took over in the 90's. Coincidence? I think not.
The smartest indie artists will find a way to monetize their work, but Jello Biafra is right to ask if that means musicians will have to be troubadours going forward.
lol, that's pretty funny. for how Linus has recently been tearing off people's heads lately, i had just assumed his problems were more "Get offa my lawn" kind of squawking.
so they can't just buy the el-cheapo $800 surface, they need the $1400 surface pro. may as well buy a laptop at that pricepoint.
yep, expect next year to see blackberry's IP assets used in litigation vs Apple and Samsung and Microsoft. Not Google -- everyone's afraid of them.
having dual CEO's was a pretty stupid move

Lawyer labor lobby for Bob Loblaw.
the American Bar Association isn't a labor union. It's a labor LOBBY.

one should stop driving cars because most people are unable to independently explain how the internal combustion engine works.
me, i pour gas into the gas tank, and the thing just fucking works. it's a goddamned miracle i tell you!

fugg yes, JCVD!
RAID is not a backup BUT it can help when you absolutely must recover data. For mission critical work, you need both.

maybe "free" linux should be user-$upported so Linus can afford a backup drive.
