  1. Re:Europe has most zombie infested networks.. on Visual DDoS Representation and Its Ramifications · · Score: 1

Well, I didn't see the figure take into account the penetration of PC and Broadband in various countries. Hong Kong is very connected, so you'd expect it's per capita infection rate to be higher as there are more machines on more of the time with more bandwidth. I'd expect BB to have spread wider in Europe than US looking at the comments about rural areas in the US, whereas well over 90% of the UK has BroadBand capability. I'm sure someone has the figures... I think what the figures show are that Europe is more connected (and has more bandwidth overall) than the US, and so there are more vulnerable people online here, and each person is more vulnerable thanks to thicker pipes and even thicker sysdamins at the ISP :-)

On that basis, I wouldn#t call it a virus, but it does sound an awful lot like a trojan horse. You think you've bought an audio CD but what you've actually got is a corrupted non-red book optical disk that installs software you didn't ask for on your machine. Aren't trojans one of the warnings the RIAA gives you against P2P?

If people are happy to install DirectX to play games or Adobe Acrobat to read the documentation for their MP3 player, why can't they install Cygwin to run GNU software? All it would take is a quick check in the install routine to see if the correct version was installed, just like with DirectX.

Of course, on my Mandrake distro (I believe it's part of KDE help), all man and info pages are translated into HTML on the fly so you can browse all three systems of documentation in one place. It's very nice. All it needs now is a mini web-server rather than a mini web-browser so that I can direct my favourite browser to help://apt-get to get whichever is the latest documentation on apt-get (including, possibly, remotely hosted docs on the installed version noting exploits, bugs etc.)

Why don't the script kiddies run around giving people heart attacks? Anyone know? Or use a system that relies on the conductivity of the skin to get the message through rather than being completely wireless. Then someone would have to touch you to jack into your system.

You do have to consider that unless we can get out and tell people, most are going to think, 'Oh, website X is broken, I'll go to Y instead.' rather than 'Oh, Windows is broken, let's use Linux/Mac/PalmOS instead'.

I don't think Linux has reached critical mass yet, but I hope there will be enough incumbants on old Windows systems as well as everyone on the new systems for the new Windows market to be ignored by the web hosts.

There is actually a watch that does this. It's available from Argos (site does not support Gecko renderer) in the UK.

The virus is described as non-harmful, but the watch is infrared.
