Actually Egypt killed more Palestinians in one Massacre than the Israelis have ever killed over the course of their entire war...
The problem here is that the totalitarian states in the Middle east create one hell of a lot of propaganda. The world is litterally soaking in propaganda, 100% of it false. Many people outside of those countries are foole as well.
"The Matrix Reloaded" had a prophesy driven holy war which turned out to be a hoax, disasterous and "another system of control".
That's a perfect message for the middle east, and a message that the totalitarian regimes in the Middle east don't want heard in their countries.
If you read Arab journals, then you'll see that Iraq triggered all of the Arab presses in to absolute anti-American hysteria. All of the governments in the region are afraid that they may be next and they want maximum antiAmerican feeling prevailent to slow us down in getting cooperation.
Yes they aren't completely friendly to radical islam, but they aren't really afraid of radical Islam either - because the worst that radical Islam can do is kill and oppress a lot of people and these totalitarian regimes aren't against that at all, in fact they want to maintain a level of violence because it distracts people and strengthens their power structures. The more enemies the better, in fact! It's liberalism, prosperity and rising expectations that they actually fear.
Sheetrock's posting makes no sense unless you he's talking about compressed files. On my windows 2000 machine I keep lots of directories compressed, so if I ran this program over my files, they'd get bigger in actual disk space in compressed size because the amount of redundancy would be less.
Most people have their browsers set to only show the uncompressed size of files even if they have disk compression turned on, so they'd never notice the difference.
I check out PolyphonicHMI's website. There's no "products" section, no "download" section... There is a "partners" section, which implies that they have no money and an incomplete product - partners is business speak for "I need a sugar daddy"
They used to save all of the grease drippings from the hamburgers, reprocess it and use it to fry the french fries in.
They also reprocessed the french fry grease eternally and reused it - there were probably oil molecules from the 50s in every fry... Along with detergent and metal shavings from cleaning the grill.
Then, probably for advertizing reasons, they switched to vegitable oil. But people missed the beef flavor of lard, so they started adding some sort of bullion flavoring.
As far as I can tell they WAY overdid it. The french frys smelled like rotting carcasses to me (or something). They were way too "flavored".
They seem to have toned it down lately. The fries seem edible again - even if they don't taste like they were fried in lard.
I just heard a report on NPR that the most likely cause of the loss of the shuttle was a auxilary power unit exploding and causing a quick loss of control.
The APU's are turbines that use hydrazine fuel. It's highly explosive and there's been talk of finding a safer power source, but the problem is that batteries would be much heavier, and coming up with a lightweight replacement would be a multi billion dollar research project.
Anyway the turbines were due to come on line about the time the shuttle broke apart.
Scientist Michio Kaku said that the explosion was "par for the course" in that "about 1 in 75 space launches explodes" and this was columbia's 102 mission. Which is only to say that rockets are a dangerous form of transportation.
His next point was that this is a reason to think that the nuclear powered rockets that some (who?) are considering are a bad idea.
Except for the last but one scene being completely mistranslated and the sense of it ruined (and one minor mistranslation early on) the Disney dub is amazingly good.
It's the best dub done yet and certainly good enough that you can proudly show the movie to people who don't like subtitles.

Eek! They left standardization of threading/multiprocessing?
I must really be out of it to not notice!
I wish I could say that at least that means they won't fuck it up as badly as Java...
But beyond have an OS independent way to write multithreaded/multiprocessor programs, there's another problem that needs to be solved for multiprocessor platforms:
basically, the "volatile" keyword isn't quite enough. For most processor designs, you need to use interlocked instructions to make data "globally visible" as intel calls it.
For most purposes, a "volatile" keyword that tells the compiler to always use interlocked instructions when storing/altering a variable would work for most things.
Some symantics of the language would have to change. For instance "++variable" is defined in C as returning a reference to the varible that's been incremented. This would be wrong for interlocked access where (for various reasons) you need it to return the incremented value instead.
I think it is safe to say that this is completely off topic
Its also safe to say that we're the only two people left reading this topic (let alone this thread) which disappeared off the slashdot's page long ago. In a private conversation, the original topic doesn't matter.
As for your point... I'm uncertain both about what you meant and about whether what you're saying is correct.
Are you trying to suggest that the situation is different in the middle east because there the problem is the people as much as the governments?
Frankly I suspect that the only REAL difference here is the role of religion.
I've read suggestions (but I don't really know a lot about it), I've read suggestions that the Germans (and possibly the Japanese) DID manage to stir up their people's blood lust before the war...
Also one of the frustrating things about the middle east is that the people of each country have no say in what their governments do (say the poor Iraqi citizens). They feel completely victimized and get VERY angry whenever another country reacts to the crap 'their' despotic government pulls. They are both like hostages and like children who never blame their parents. Dictatorships infantalize their people.
When you say "other than on the measure of human loss, the USA probably suffered the most from WWII," I'm not sure what you mean, but I would guess that you don't mean "suffer". You mean that power trip we've got on has warped our society...
My impression has always been that the cold war, or at least end of the cold war that I was around to see was a paranoid joke... The Soviets were too sane to be too much of a threat...
It was always clear that the concentration of power in Washington caused by the Soviets opposing every source of power in the world (religion, wealth, existing governments) caused insanity. With so much power concentrated and cooperating in one place every sycophantic parasite in the world flocked there to join.
But now that I see how all the lefties I used to respect are parroting idiotic propaganda from the Arabs - and understanding beyond the borders of their own country, now I'm wondering to what extent we were fools in the last big/cold war. The fundimentalist fools really are dangerous. More dangerous than I thought modern people could be. Of course that's because they aren't really modern... But in any case it makes me wonder if I misjudged the world before. Maybe people were more dangerous than I judged them to be.
While it looks fine, and useful, I can't help noticing that last time we heard about D it didn't have most of these features (templates, overloading etc.) and they were claiming that the lack of these features was it's strength.
I called them ignorant swine for that at the time.
The new D looks a lot like Modula 3, a great language aiming at the same sort of niche which disappeared without a trace.
Actually a new war is a bit of a relief because our own war-addicted religious fanatics were Jonesing so hard they were ready to pillary Clinton for an unapproved blow job and put all of the homosexuals in detention camps.
Terrorism gives them a hobby again and a reason to care what the rest of the world thinks.
An aside about Clinton's pathetic jail house sex (trying to find a corner where his guards couldn't see him) reminds me of being told F.U.C.K used to stand for "Fornication under consent of the King" - a sign that troups could hang on their door when being paid in pussy.
Anyway the LONG term solution is going to have to be to break those atavistic, hold-out, bigotted middle eastern hell-hole societies wide open.
You know, it wasn't too many years ago that official reality (as evidenced in textbooks and the like) was that all non-christians (think buddists etc) were considered dangerous and only human by accident. After all how can one keep the devil's murderous impulses under control without the word of God? Empathy for them was concidered impossible - they were too wierd.
Before WWII it was impossible for a Jew to get into a position of power in this country. But being the enemy of the enemy made the Jews into one of us.
People forget that 60 years ago, the concept of a "negro doctor" was so strange it could only provoke laughter. Not too long before women had the same problem
Our society has changed completely. It's improved really quickly. These days my friends are often more excited by Japanese movies being released than by Hollywood ones.
That's the change that hasn't happened in the Middle east. The big one is that non-muslims are REALLY considered to be less than human.
We have no right to life in their eyes, and when they talk about humiliation what they really mean is that non-mulsims are supposed to be third class citizens (as they were under the Caliphate), we're supposed to get off the sidewalk to let them pass, not own property and not have our lives protected by law, that sort of equality.
For us to be successful is humiliating. For us to be in control is intolerable.
THAT'S why they celebrate when their children suicide bomb us. We're the scum who has to be put back in our place by any means necessary...
I've been reading some right winger's lately. One of them pointed out that total defeat did miracles for Japanese and German society. Hell I think Japanese culture is much healthier than ours.
So maybe there's no cure for a power trip better than complete defeat.
We need to not bother with Israel (3+ billion a year funding) and we need to keep our nose of the palestinians as well. No media channel covers that worth a damn. So read the 2nd line again!
While Israel may be able to hold her own, what the IslamoFacists want there is the same as Rwanda.
It's not just about Israel, the Saudis are spreading their terrorist version of Islam far and wide. Good old Osama's a pretty typical product of their education system. They're teaching the old tired theory that God wants they to invade the world and has assured their victory.
Handing the IslamoFacists a victory in Israel and showing weakness to them would be the dumbest thing we could possible do.
Unless you're sure you can convert your entire country to fundimentalist islam and get everyone to give up all their freedoms peacefully, you've got a war on your hands whether you like it or not.

Maybe it will all be done with elevators soon.
I wonder how many days it will take to climb to orbit in a space elevator.
Reread your post dude, nowhere did I say say "tasted like a rotting carcass" I said "smelled like rotting carcasses to me (or something)"
The post was modded +3 insightful; apparently I'm not the only one who didn't pick up on the satire.
I'm sure it was modded [insightful] instead of [funny]
because the moderator thought [insightful] was a funnier mod...
I'm sorry.

I'm always interested in finding good translations...
I'm especially interested in the Myazaki box set (that has ALL of the movies except "Sprited Away").
As far as I know, that's only available from the Hong Kong pirates and probably has some movies that are not available anywhere else.

Yeah, it gives me the hebegeebies that they've got bullshit marketing blurbs before they've even finished the language.
I remember older marketing blurbs from them that completely contradict what they're saying now.
After my experience working for overly corporate customers, the HELL I want to try a new language that's an alpha from a commercial company.
It probably won't be usable till version 2 or 3 and since it's proprietary it will never be affordable.
