Like this response it is on topic to both your statement and the subject of this particular news piece.
I think with the person's loss of a 100G of data we all knew it was going to happen because there are too many variables, people are fallable and maintaining a dual OS strategy is doing more harm than good.
And to answer your question, Rendus, I've pointed out both gently and rudely the "death by a thousand cuts" some moderators seem to be inflicting on some users...dunno why, hence the second link...modded as offtopic when it was not.
(shrug)
I don't know why, and in some respects I've ceased to care, after all as someone said "Karma ain't your dick size". If this is true, then why are some moderators such as kvigor such "pricks of the litter" (yeah, an ad-hominim attack meant as humor...fullfilling yet in poor taste)
And why kvigor was not modded as offtopic, I'll never know.
The question is, perhaps was I abusing the +1 bonus? Perhaps.
Are moderators such as kvigor abusing thier privelage? Perhaps.
Should a post be modded down because it is not understood? Hell, no!
Should Calculus be no longer taught because people don't understand it, save for the very few?

Ok, ignore the crappy subject line and hear me out.
Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't Jet Li's first intro to American film was in Lethal Weapon 3 or 4. (I don't remember off the top of my head).
Now, Li in Lethal Weapon, was similar to Chan and Schwar...uh, Arnold S. in the Terminator 1 and 2 films...their primary talent (action) spoke louder for them than their voices ever did.
I brought up with the Monsters, Inc. topic that certain voice actors *don't need* to be seen to be appreciated.
As a brief mental excercise, Imagine trading....ohhh, say...Anthony Hopkins' role in "The Silence of the Lambs" with Arnold S's role in "Terminator". Does not work at all does it?
(yes, typecasting and stereotyping issues aside, but we are talking about Hollywood's strengths)
Anywho, more to the point and topic:
I'm simple saying that in Li's performance in LW 3 or 4..he did not need to speak at all, and from the reviews, perhaps he should have kept his lines to a minimum like Arnold S. did in his early career (I think A.S. has said "I'll be bach" in all his movies...trademark?) and in the Terminator, especially....he did not need to speak, either.
Contrast that to Hopkins' screen presence and vocal talents. He'd be as out of place in an action film as...as...a neon sign on a Xmas tree. Honestly A.H could have *still* carried the film TSOTL with half the dialogue...Hell, IMO he carried "Hannibal" to be a 8 out of 10 for me. Lack of Jodi Foster was -1/2 a star, but the *gorey* bits were the -1 1/2. (of course that is me, I could have lived w/o it...Imagine the movie "Psyco"...you did not *see* anything it was left up to the viewer).
Point being, that Li's martial art skills are not in question, if I read the reviews correctly.
The plot, the dialogue and the effects got in the way, correct?
So perhaps taking a lesson from Lethal Weapon, because he helped *make that film* what it was (ok, Gibson and Glover, too) by his sheer presence and talent in the martial arts, not by his vocal skills.
Speaking of Vocal Skillz, I'll shut up now.
(oh, and if you are a Jacki Chan fan, The Legend of theDrunken Master and Who am I have some of the best fights I've see yet.

In some cases moderation is both subjective and objective, just like humor.
In all the time I've been reading/. there has only been 2 times a "funny" comment has brought tears to my eyes from laughing so hard.
Keep in mind, this is over, ?what? 5 some odd years.

If you have ever done any programming you will find that what happened to Apple was one of those unfortunate things that happens to a lot of programmers from time to time...nobody knows knows it all, dude.

I'm probably going to get moded as a troll or flambait just for sharing, but here goes:
S.O.N.Y Suing Others Now You!
A.I.B.O...And It Becomes Opressive.
(My sig was in error as I had *Opressed* insted of *Repressed*, but I was corrected. I wonder if Monty Pytho's creators would sue for getting their quotes wrong in sigs? (shudder) )
Now before this is modded down as a troll, I don't troll. Flamebait, guilty on odd occasions. Offtopic? who does not stray off topic from time to time, eh? Over/Under rated.. ego slap/stroke... had overrated applied to me so much it is almost a punishment because it so over used (especially when it is used less than 2 to 5 minutes after posting...oye veigh!).
Censorship takes on many forms; from the subtle "I don't like this person for reason X" lets mod him down every chance we get; to the not so subtle "Just SHUT UP, will ya!".
In either case, is it warranted?
In my case (and a few vocal slashdot minorities) who knows? If every time someone gets modded down the moderator has to post a 20 word reason I think there would be a change in thinking. Heck, if I got a (in vivian's voice) You're a complete bastard, and we all hate you! (end voice)...Ok, cool, that is a reason (not a good one, but a reason none the less).
As for the Article, side A and B think they are right...somewhere in the middle is the truth.
Read the quote again.
Applying punishment to the many for the failure/stupidity of one is applicable in the military, not on the internet.
Oh, well, here sometimes "It is better to be silent and thought a fool, than to start typing and prove otherwise (with apologies to the author of such wisdom..Confucious?)
Ah, true, very true....you make an excellent point.
If I may, I'd like to point out that you are very correct, however, for some reason a 300k/s thru-put on a cd rom != optical drives.
Some times what it comes down to is access time and size of the media. access time increases as the size increases (god, that almost sounds dirty).
Further honing down: the "superdrive" as it is called does dvd-r's at what? 2X? for a dvd-r, but does cdr's at ~8 or 10X...errr...the light just dawned...I seem to be further proving you correct.:| (snort)
But I was pointing at the trade offs not with r/rw media, but the trade off between capacity/speed of cdr vs optical.
As this article is pointing out, the possibility of "huge" optical drives (dvd-rams?) is 'do-able' but the access/seek/Xfer rate suffers.
I suppose if the cd/dvd ratings of 4X were equal in thruput, we'd still see the dvd tech "falling behind" most likely from the overhead.
Any thoughts?
(Dang, I wish I had mod points, but alas I've only been give that privelage *once*...sigh)
While it has been mentioned that this possibly could be vaporware (or vapourware, if you prefer) the trade off for such a large capacity is usually speed.
I've read thru all the post and that point is usually missed.
Take CD's for instance, when they could be described as "languishing" at 650/700M for a long time, DVD-RAM (commonly called opticals or MO drives/disks at the time) carried 4 to 5.2G of storage. The trade off has always been speed.
CD's were hitting the 20X speeds while MO/Opticals were "languishing" at a max of 4X speed, or there abouts.
Now tape drives are another story. I've recently gone thru the hell of restoring from a DLT7K in a dell powervault...the restore took 7+ hours for 6 or so files that did not total a few dozen Mb.
This is unacceptable for data archival/retrieval, IMO.
To top it all off, it took 3 days and many calls to *ell's techs to get *nowhere*.
Now, if a "jukebox" could be made with 16 drives of 100G capacity via Gb ethernet, fiber, or connect to an UW scsi that would kick arse.
IF searching took less than an hour over that *entire* unit...it would be a godsend.
Think about 1.6Tb of storage! Combine that with what pinnacle micro did with their jukeboxes...used a hard drive to cache directory info and frequently accessed files to take care of some of the speed issues involved.
So much data, so little time and capacity to hold it all.
I hope these 100G disks/drives do come to fruition, because that will mean at the very least that the 5.2G disks will finally drop in price.:)
(my sig is a voice in the wilderness to all metamoderators)

I'm probably going to get moded as a troll or flambait just for sharing, but here goes:
S.O.N.Y Suing Others Now You!
A.I.B.O...And It Becomes Opressive.
(My sig was in error as I had *Opressed* insted of *Repressed*, but I was corrected. I wonder if Monty Pytho's creators would sue for getting their quotes wrong in sigs? (shudder) )
The skillet (slashdot) reports on the pot calling the kettle censor.
we will either loudly hold on to our liberty or it will become clear that we gave up our rights by our silence.
This is the reason some of us refuse to shut up on the topic
Moose out....
Ah, true, very true....you make an excellent point.
:| (snort)
If I may, I'd like to point out that you are very correct, however, for some reason a 300k/s thru-put on a cd rom != optical drives.
Some times what it comes down to is access time and size of the media. access time increases as the size increases (god, that almost sounds dirty).
Further honing down: the "superdrive" as it is called does dvd-r's at what? 2X? for a dvd-r, but does cdr's at ~8 or 10X...errr...the light just dawned...I seem to be further proving you correct.
:)
I hope these 100G disks/drives do come to fruition, because that will mean at the very least that the 5.2G disks will finally drop in price.

This is proof that in the case of Microsoft, it is the company and not the users.
In the case of slashdot it is not the companyit is the users/moderators
ah, the saying "never attribute to malice what can easily be explained by stupidity".
In the words of TWR (every slashdot moderator cloud has a silver lining)
"go ahead, mod me down, you are still an idiot"
so, go ahead, mod me down, you are still a vindictive idiot.
Shit, I was being insightful to up my karma, and FYI modding me down does not up yours.
(hidden message, what hidden message)
Slashdot moderators prove, once again, no good deed goes unpunished.
Go ahead and mod me down, you're going to do it anyway and prove TWR correct, again, and again.
