  1. Re:maybe its just me on Researchers Transmit Optical Data at 16.4 Tbps 2550km · · Score: 2, Interesting

To be honest I don't find this *that* amazing.

I worked at the victim-of-the-telecoms-bubble that was Marconi 2000-02 and there was a bit of kit, the snappily titled UPLx, that could deal with 160 10Gbps channels down a pair of fibres, unregenerated over about 1000km - using soliton wave shaping and some sodding great Ramen pump laser to get there (nothing to do with noodles before you ask). It was demoed in the labs reliably, and I believe sold in to Telstra Australia

    In 5 years, they've added 4 Gbps ... wow.

I had the (mis)fortune of working for Compuserve Tech support in the summer of '97 whilst one holiday from Uni.

Every other call I had was a clueless newbie who'd forgotten their password, and wanted us to give them a new one. Problem is most of them didn't know their way around a keyboard very well, and certainly didn't know where the non-alphanumeric symbols were.

This caused no end of converations with the support staff pointing the user around the keyboard - "No, no, up from the 0, you need to hold down shift as well ...."

Still pretty secure considering what you get now.

  3. Re:A start in the right direction on Japan's New Games Rating System · · Score: 1

It all depends on how well implemented the restrictions are. In the UK there have been (admittedly not government controlled) 18+ categories on games for a while, but to the best of my knowledge no one goves a hoot.

Cigarettes and alcohol are legally age restricted over here, and companies can be punished for selling to minors ... is this maybe the way to go for games manufacturers to prove they're serious about age restrictions?

  4. Comparable? on PlayStation 3 May Play Too Much · · Score: 1

This is a similar problem to one being argued over in the Defence industry. Many are saying that building in easy capability for expansion should be a priority for a platform rather than 'gold-plating' the original model with what seems good at the time, but is soon out of date. Leaving this room allows you the space to include new technlogies as they develop over the lifetime of the platform, giving it a longer life.

It seems to work on my PC, I've had it for years and the only original piece is the chassis and case, with the main beneficiary being the electronics companies who have made money out of selling me the upgrades, so why not on the PS3?

  6. More information? on UK Has First Verdict in P2P Case · · Score: 3, Insightful

    According to the Register:

The organisation began pursuing alleged copyright infringers in October 2004, and to date has come to terms with 88 people, some of whom have paid up to £6,500 to avoid a court hearing.

Considering the number of people downloading music from P2P clients in the UK, you're going to have to be really really unlucky to be one of the 88.

One thing to consider is how 'targetted' these cases were. Do we know if the BPI are chasing the people who are providing the files for download or just those downloading? I believe the RIAA were doing chasing the content providers in attempt to 'cut off the supply' of files available for download.

It might also be interesting to find out what client that these guys were using - more for my own personal benefit so I never use it ...

  8. How long till Intel get stiffed? on What is the Intel Switch Costing Apple? · · Score: 1

Fab capacity isn't an issue, if the price is right AMD will find the capacity outsourcing to one fab company or another.

Intel selling at a loss is an interesting idea. Loss-leaders are all well and good for getting a toe-hold in a market, but making a loss can't go on forever. As soon as Motorola had the balls to jack the prices up -when the Xbox business had bought them a little security, Apple jumped ship to Intel.

Intel are not going to be so reliant on one revenue stream so might not be so shy and retiring as Motorola were, so it'll be interesting to see if when Apple start to have to pay the 'true' price for the chips they're using. Will they hang around, or will they run to the next chip manufacturer?

    I'm wondering, why Intel?

In most of the current performance comparisions, AMD chips came out as being streets ahead of IBM in terms of access latency, memory bandwidth and many other benchmarks.

If memory serves I've read a number of analyst reports stating that they reckon it'll be a while before IBM can get performance like AMD, so why not hook up with them instead?

I'm with you, anything that can point me towards a new band or a new style of music that I've not tried before with some intelligence is a good thing.

I freely advertise and recommend music that I like to friends, bearing in mind the kind of thing that they like, and they do the same for me. Amazon does something similar with its 'people who bought this also bought...' section. What Apple are doing isn't too far removed from this concept. What's the biggie?

Oh a surpise, yet more generalised sweeping statements - 'a bunch of young adolescent boys', hardly. The E2 user community is a *lot* more varied than that, with people from all over the world, of both sexes, and in almost every age range you wish to name regularly contributing to the site. I have met a huge range of people from a user called sensei, who if memory serves, was a 67 year old Japanese bloke, to poker dealers in Las Vegas.

Also due to the voting system (imperfect, but what isn't) I would argue that you get less guff in there than you do in many USENET groups I've known, as in E2 they get edited out.

To summarise - think before you post, and try to avoid making statements concerning that which you do not understand
