Craiglist should be careful what it wishes for! They should be in talks with PadMapper et. al. so it doesn't get caught painfully obsolete. How difficult could it be to slap some lipstick on that terrible design? Obviously their layout is not what distinguishes them so I think a great Kickstarter project could find some funding to create a Craiglist replacement that would bring it to the 21 century.
Some endorsements, some marketing and a more fit competitor could be born very easily. So who's in?
I'm having a hard time understanding how configuring country parameters in the pseudo-factory is equal to hardcoding. And then you jump to implementation details with suggesting how DLLs could be used.
I think you muddled a few concepts... But, granted that might not be the best solution... what do you propose??
point is, just cause you can manage it, doesnt mean 10,000,000 lines of code is really something to brag about, especially for something that feels as cheap as quickbooks (though it does a ok job if your accountant cant use excel and must have things that visually represent checks)
I don't think this is your typical criticism for bloat. Just managing an annual mountain of tax laws and applying them correctly would easily go over thousands of lines. Fine lets use Excel to do that, what is the limit for tabs in a workbook? I bet VB will be a tiny bit slower calculating your tax refund and lets hope it doesn't blow the stack.
I didn't read TFA but I vaguely remember there was a TED video explaining that statistically the earth's population will stabilize around 10 Billion. That number is the equilibrium between countries reaching a higher standard of living and industrialized countries going with lower levels of births and a bigger senior population.
The question is if the earth can support us growing to 10 billion.
Wrong, ISP as in Internet Service Providers don't care what you are doing with your bits... It's the CAs (Certificate Authorities) who are not issuing certificates with CSRs of 1024 bits in length.
You are absolutely correct, as long as you see IT as any other department. If the Janitorial dept., IT dept and Facilites dept are all the same, then you will be insane if you wouldn't outsource IT !!! It's just computers and stuff, even a monkey can do it...
+1 Wall Mart is the case study for Business Intelligence, Data warehousing, Data Mining, etc... They analyze every little trend in their inventory, sales, customer traffic, etc. I remember reading one time they placed beer next to diapers during the week at night because that's was when young dads make a quick run to restock, coming out with diapers in one arm and a six pack on the other.
There is no way you can outsource that and remain competitive.
Also... you get to talk and work with your actual users. You get immediate feedback, even directly between developer and user. This interaction creates new business rules that stay in house that could put you ahead of your competitors.
If you are in control of your IT you are not at the whim of your contractors, no rush to upgrade to the latest version, you get to understand what gets more priority in your IT assets.
Lots of benefits if your business depends on having IT running your business and giving you "business intelligence" (trends).
Of course you can achieve the same thing through contractors but need them on a tight leash and you will be distracted in managing costs (timesheets anyone?).
Agreed but. How old is the hardware? If it's over 5 years then you should consider monitoring the following components that are exposed to physical degradation: - Hard drive - Cooling fans - Power Supply - Network equipment if your electrical current is flaky.
Your uptime might be more impacted by the level of maintenance you do on your equipment. I'm afraid to ask but if in any way your equipment is close to kitchen smoke then you could experience nasty greasy deposits in fans and air vents.
Your next step is have a disaster recovery at the ready with your most recent VM image backup.

You make a reasonable argument there
Oh I see that "ichthus" has posted it already:

It's a follow up to the so thought dupey.

How do I know the FBI posted a PDF?
Because it doesn't have any logos or official headings!
So... If I can replicate that code in assembler then I'm skilled?
Sounds more like job security if you ask me.
That's why next year will be when Linux takes over the desktop. But not today.
But just wait until next year, I promise.
And if it wasn't available we would find a way to install it.
Next topic.
Cool, thanks for offering which I'm taking the liberty to ask for suggestions...
Is there are any literature that you would recommend to get that basic knowledge and help get the foot in the door?
I would imagine it would be more about financials, terminology and practices and less about technology.
And stay off his lawn, dammit!!
Oh and... check free disk space!

It can also break on the upgrade... so is not an easy answer.
They are called "interesting facts"
I would rather admit that the code jam questions are hard rather than saying I don't want to keep my skills sharp.
Huh? There are no hot chicks where you live? I didn't understand you logic at all!
