This post is more funny than insightful.
But, OTOH, your comment (surprisedly) perfectly suited with the plot "Back to the future": to deal creatively with the paradox of the time traveling, in both funny and "acceptable" way as the films did. That is the plot prevented to explain deeply the "technical" inside the "cause and effect" of time traveling, instead, considered this as "natural" phenomenon. Simplifying the paradox let the screenwriters more space for their creativeness.
In my opinion, this is the most successful "time traveling" film ever. Just look at "Looper (2012)", is really stupid, more recent "Terminator Genisys" is better but maybe because of the actions. Those two, and some other films were over-complicated, that the people behind them really lost on the stories.
At my first job, 30 years ago, experienced people were bullying inexperienced people, just because they had a little bit more knowledge.
This is WRONG in the first place. He has not bullied any inexperienced person.
Aww, all I saw around the web is people's yelling about how bad Linus this week, from whom never really actual read what the context of his comments, whom he talked with, etc.
(Links of conversations of Linus, Google, Slashdot, LKML) You may or may not agree with him, but you've brought the wrong experience on him.
Just read all these comments, I think Linus is right to choose straight speaking, when "professional communication" will spend you much more energy on Internet. But he has rule: https://www.kernel.org/doc/Doc...
Chapter 5: Things to avoid
Your post is not wrong after all, but not about Linus himself.
A reddit user (beethovens_ear_horn) pointed out comment of a female kernel developer about Sarah Sharp in 2013 (when she started the fire): https://lkml.org/lkml/2013/7/2...
You've described accurately both Linus, vs M. Garrett and S. Sharp (as my view).
Can't describe better than:
For the record I think Sharp is a dick and Garrett is a pussy.
I think Linus behavior could described exactly with the "Fsck you, Nvidia!", when he later added (usually not to be mentioned) "Don't get me wrong!" (he upset with what Nvidia have done, not pointed finger at the company). He the one against hostile environment toward Microsoft, but he don't like "deep throat" Microsoft 'products' (as you may knew, a debate with Garrett).
He attacks at (bad) behaviors, products of others, not tries to personal attack, insult them (he described in Chapter 5 of the Management Style document). And usually with the senior, experience developers.
As my posted above, I don't know if all feminist SJWs act like that (like hypocrite), but like FEMEN group, they use to protest topless in inappropriate ways - which they know they will be mistreated, or beaten - to 'protected' women values.
FYI, *patches* will be moderated by someone other than me. As this is my *kernel*, not a government entity, I have the right to replace any *patch* I feel like with “fart fart fart fart”.
Matthew will soon add this to his new Management Style document.
Thanks for info about Matthew, and thanks for using the word "militant".
I imagine when a colonel (he a strategist, not a private) made a critical mistake at the battle, and very *normally* a general would shout out loud (not insult) at the face of this colonel. All agreed, and after that things done, no one think about it anymore.
Linux Kernel Document about Management style describe clearly here, it's *clear* that Linus *acknowledge* what he is doing, and transparently describes that:
Chapter 5: Things to avoid
There's one thing people hate even more than being called "d*ckhead",
and that is being called a "d*ckhead" in a sanctimonious voice. The
first you can apologize for, the second one you won't really get the
chance. They likely will no longer be listening even if you otherwise
do a good job.
We all think we're better than anybody else, which means that when
somebody else puts on airs, it _really_ rubs us the wrong way. You may
be morally and intellectually superior to everybody around you, but
don't try to make it too obvious unless you really _intend_ to irritate
somebody (*).
Similarly, don't be too polite or subtle about things. Politeness easily
ends up going overboard and hiding the problem, and as they say, "On the
internet, nobody can hear you being subtle". Use a big blunt object to
hammer the point in, because you can't really depend on people getting
your point otherwise.
Some humor can help pad both the bluntness and the moralizing. Going
overboard to the point of being ridiculous can drive a point home
without making it painful to the recipient, who just thinks you're being
silly. It can thus help get through the personal mental block we all
have about criticism.
(*) Hint: internet newsgroups that are not directly related to your work
are great ways to take out your frustrations at other people. Write
insulting posts with a sneer just to get into a good flame every once in
a while, and you'll feel cleansed. Just don't crap too close to home.
They, Linus and developers are in the same community, know each other (even in the real life, see the case of Greg in the links I posted above). If they don't like they are FREE to express or leave. Matthew don't, Sarah did. So, why ask how Matthew feels instead of judging as outsider.
The case of Sarah, posted above, her arguments are weak.
Imagine, I don't know what would be funnier, Linus would give two thumbs up, or point finger, if she was a member of FEMEN group, protested (of course, topless) at Kernel summit.
Damn it, I mistaken opened two tabs with the same post, so had not corrected the spelling error ("has appears") and numerical error ("three or four" instead of "four or five") and forget to add:
Linus uses strong words with experienced developers who makes really stupid mistake, that unacceptable with their rank.
He has never been (a dick) (and may will never be).
It's just that his style is not suited with someone, and he/she quits. This is just normal.
The kind of stories about "Linus bullying" has appears four or five a years, but each times, there are people jump out and claim, likely they never ever read these stories before (not about you). So each topic about "Linus bullying", the *same patterns* of discussion appear again and again.
BTW, there was a Slashdot user (he is/was also "a newbie" kernel developer) said that Linus is very nice and friendly toward newbies, unexperienced developers.
He was clearly described the style of discussion (as he described, say louder not insult): https://www.kernel.org/doc/Doc...
or here, http://arstechnica.com/busines...
or here, http://arstechnica.com/busines...
Some may say that he is rude, but in fact, I see he's straight, but his words were putted out of the context. Remember the "F you, Nvidia! (and pointed finger)" incident, he right after added "Don't get me wrong...", but the later usually never mentioned. But the progress of Nvidia action later proved his style works.
I think the other version is considered more believable, that Soviet got the draft version of Concorde, which is (was) inferior. That why they had to add the canard wing, and landing with higher speed (than Concorde), which, why they must added braking parachute. Also, Concorde have better brake, too.
May be Wikipedia is right.
After fighting with Russian words (Google translator) and searching with Yandex (you can't find the meaningful result with Google). Here some useful infos:
Carrier rocket "Soyuz-2", which is to start from the cosmodrome Vostochny, fully meets the technical requirements and the size of the object space of the harbor. Special train with the spacecraft for a few days is at the railway station waiting for the spaceport and transport nodes "Soyuz" in the assembly and test complex (MIC). It will build and launch preparations for the launch. .......
According to the press service of the Center of Operation of Land Space Infrastructure (COLSI), the only obstacle preventing to get to work — not full readiness of MIKa
In the Soviet time, they "distributed" the academies, industries, scientific institutes to states, not centralized them. That why Tupolev now located in Ukraine, bus producer moved to Latvia (can't remember a name), nuclear research in Novosibirsk, etc. Some from Ukraine moved to Russian and vise versa.
OK, what ever. I consider is minor point (may be you are right, I was mixed with reading the replying post which mention Russian bombing). Ignore my first point.
Now next! Is there any "lack of reading ability" that's not worth to respond!?
If this is a pro-Kremlin news, one would rise question about its credibility. But, The Moscow Times is not, so don't bother, they tell the truth. (cheap ranting;)
Now, dig inside the article:
1. They cited Medusa (may be Meduza.io, that's what Google said). That said:
according to news website Medusa, which picked up the story from TASS.... but an unidentified space agency of a of a told the TASS
But,
The quote could not be found on TASS, a state-owned news agency
They did not said the quote was deleted, or it's never published?? Who is unidentified agency??? Such a confusion, when no one but Medusa can confirm (and may be never).
2. The article quality is full of spelling errors. May be they just rushed to publish it.
news agency of a of a...... 'S Report instead TASS quoted........ 's Demand Putin looks increasingly unlikely to be met..... Month Last, Gazeta.ru news website
PROVE IT! I encourage you counter point-to-point my post. What prevent you do that instead of cheap accusation!?
If you can't, SHUT UP.
He, Rei, can't show proof of his post just ranting. What ever you claim, what ever you whine, that does not change the fact.
He claimed, Russian use $200 barrel bombs instead of precise guided bombs. This is just parroting what MSM said. The Russian released videos, why bother!?
He claimed, Daesh vs non-Daesh. I showed Telegraph article. And, plus, the words from mouth of U.S officials in The Guardians article.
I showed the source of civilian deaths, which is cited from Wikipedia, which is cited from New York Times.
All are cited from Western sources. The last is from "bull-horn of Kremlin" (despite that you may could not discrete that they tell this truth either).
PS: I'm long time reader of Slashdot. I know Rei is smart person (that may be some of you like him), but these posts of him in this topic is just propaganda or he's just brainwashed to believed in those.
1) There videos of Russian bombing targets. No need wordy rants and random Google images.
2) Explained what groups against Assad. Who they are, etc. There's not such "moderated" group which strong enough. All three armed groups are terrorist. http://www.independent.co.uk/n...
This is typical bullshit when now U.S.A claims there has "moderated" groups!??
4) When, IF
The US dropped 1600 bombs just in March of this year just against Daesh.
.... SO why the ISIL is still strong, right!?? and U.S still lectures Russia how to kill terrorists??
5) Most of civilian deaths source is SOHR (Syrian Observatory for Human Rights)
Rami Abdulrahman's UK based SOHR has been cited by virtually every western news outlet since the beginning of the uprising.
The United Kingdom-based SOHR is run out of a two-bedroom terraced home in Coventry by one person, Rami Abdulrahman,[3] a Syrian Sunni Muslim who also runs a clothes shop.
The US went due to a stupid agreement with France... the US had ridiculous nightmares about communists taking over the world.
I've read the stories of one of member of Deer Team of OSS sent to help Viet Minh, under Ho Chi Minh. Why Vietnam?: Prelude to America's Albatross by Archimedes L.A. Patti
That said, he, Ho Chi Minh, love U.S.A (he was here, when he was finding 'way to liberate the country', he may like the 'freedom' breath he felt there). He considered U.S.A was the symbol of country against colonialism. He must be good friend with U.S.A.
But, U.S.A don't want 'good friend', they need some one they can control, like Dr. Hämsterviel in Lilo and Stich:
Your minions shouldn't like you. They only need to fear you!
Communist control of Southeast Asia would give Americans control over "strategically important commodities" like natural rubber, tin, coal, iron ore, and oil.
Communist control over Vietnam's rich rice fields and Japan's dependence upon rice would make it extremely difficult to prevent Japan's eventual capitulation to Communism.
Communism was just the bogeyman at that time. Just like 'terrorism', 'dictators' today.
But, what if Ho Chi Minh was puppet of U.S.A, the history must be different. He should be king of Saudi Arabia, instead of Assad/Syria, or Iran.
Firstly, this is kind of strawman, base on non-verifiable argument (likely he is a tool of Kremlin or not, he works for Russia Gov. or not), attempts to redirect the story.
Secondly, Russia is NOT his choice, moreover not Putin's evil plan to adopt him. (Julian Assange confirmed it's his plan, that he thought Russia is the safest place for Snowden).
Assange was right, proof: http://www.wired.com/2014/08/e...
The story, by Greg Miller, recounts daily meetings with senior officials from the FBI, CIA, and State Department, all desperately trying to come up with ways to capture Snowden. One official told Miller: “We were hoping he was going to be stupid enough to get on some kind of airplane, and then have an ally say: ‘You’re in our airspace. Land.’ ” He wasn’t. And since he disappeared into Russia, the US seems to have lost all trace of him.
Thirdly, because of outside CIS reader can't read Russian, the MSM can spin story likely: 'suspected Russian submarine' crashed Irish fishing boat in May and silently revealed in September it is really the Royal Navy one (of course without apology).
Fourthly, yes Russians are not smart enough to use 'creative propaganda' (misleading headline, hit-n-run stories, redirected tactics, buried 'harmful' article under tons of entertainment stories...), but compare to Ukraine:
TheMoscowTimes, Novaya Gazeta (have English version) are explicitly against government, their articles are mostly in this direction, there is no 'positive' news. There Echo, NEWS.ru... I can't confirm when I don't read Russian.
Compare to Ukraine, the Kiyvtimes, was actively against Yanukovich, now actively support the government (surprised!?). The opposition journalists, politicians of Ukraine were kills (about 6-7 of them) in bloody week not long after the death of Nemtsov.
The western medias not interested in this story, if they reported, they did not forget to add the story of Nemtsov beside these. http://www.theguardian.com/wor...
Klitschko said that the prosecutor general, who is also from Svoboda, should launch an open and transparent investigation into the incident
Igor Miroshnichenko is still strong and healthy. (searching for Ukraine rada fighting in Youtube)
Recently, Ukraine ban 'pro-Russian' from European countries (later lifted the ban, EU journalists only), but if this is Russia, the reaction must be different: http://www.theguardian.com/wor...
Yes, somewhat I agree with you. And some interesting, too.
At the higher level, student/researcher read books like references, not like undergraduate students (go through chapter-to-chapter). Also, students at this level (higher) are rather good at his/her stuff, so the typos, structure, or even style of writing may not affect much how they get the knowledge from books.
In my opinion, this is where you can really see the personality of the author, since the book hasn't been gone over and "fluffed up" by a series of editors/reviewers/bureaucrats.
The downside is that texts can start to follow the pattern of fiction books, in that one book may really be enjoyed by one person, and not at all by another. For example, I took my first serious Real Analysis class using H.L. Royden's "Real Analysis" book...I consider this one of the best written books I've had the pleasure of using in my studies...however, my friends that took the same class hated the book!
That is, I remember when I read reviews of a graduate level book (if I remember correctly, a probability book), many reviewers complain that the author chose to use 'complicated' methods to describe much more simple problems, as they joke he tried to show off with his peers. May be they - the read could understand the stuff but they are not comfortable with reading it.
PS: Thank for suggest the title, I will consider read it.;)
On the other hand I had to memorise stuff from a terrible series of books through high school written by a couple of teachers.... didn't actually get to understand high school calculus - suddenly it made sense from first principles instead of just regurgitating bits of the textbooks.
:D , my situation may be different than yours but I have the same problem with maths because of bad textbooks, teachers. The quotation above describe nearly what I suffered.
PS: I cannot post comment properly, so try again.

TheMoscowTimes, Novaya Gazeta (have English version) are explicitly against government, their articles are mostly in this direction, there is no 'positive' news. There Echo, NEWS.ru

Igor Miroshnichenko is still strong and healthy. (searching for Ukraine rada fighting in Youtube)
Recently, Ukraine ban 'pro-Russian' from European countries (later lifted the ban, EU journalists only), but if this is Russia, the reaction must be different:

PS: Thank for suggest the title, I will consider read it. ;)
On the other hand I had to memorise stuff from a terrible series of books through high school written by a couple of teachers .... didn't actually get to understand high school calculus - suddenly it made sense from first principles instead of just regurgitating bits of the textbooks.
:D , my situation may be different than yours but I have the same problem with maths because of bad textbooks, teachers. The quotation above describe nearly what I suffered. PS: I cannot post comment properly, so try again.
