If you aren't "technically educated", how are you using that phone in the first place? It's a technical device.
What?!? So's a car, but I'll bet my Mom hasn't a clue what a carburetor does, yet she can drive one. She also uses a Mac, and I'm sure she hasn't a clue what a CPU is.
Am I just ornery this morning, or has the average IQ of the world's population fallen overnight for some reason?
There is a line where capitalism isn't beneficial for all involved.
Damn, I wish you econ numbskulls would actually try to learn something about econ before you blame all your toejam problems on one or the other forms of economic systems. Telecom is one of the most heavily regulated industries out there! Just because US-ians put up with telecom monopolies doesn't mean everyone else does.
Hint: "Laissez nous faire!" translates (roughly) to "Leave us alone!", which is decidedly not something that the telecom industry in the US enjoys. Go read Frederick Bastiat (or Hayek, or von Mises) before pontificating on econ again. This has absolutely nothing to do with Capitalism, nor any other economic system.
I've a Sun Ultra 30 I'd be willing to offer anyone who wants to truck it away. It works (OpenBSD, Splack (Slackware for sparc), Linux,...). I don't need it.
I've a couple of IBM MicroChannel pizza boxes too that you're welcome to, as long as you promise to never let 'em see the net. Install CDs included.
Lat/long Calgary, AB, Canada, you pay shipping or pick up.
Blame the English language for not having gender-free pronouns.... it's just too cumbersome to say "you know what he or she looks like and where he or she is hiding...."
You know what they look like and where they are hiding...
It's deeply wrong of the victim to say "it's just a piece of plastic." It's that plus an unpunished crime.
What did you expect, he is Canadian after all.
In the immortal words of The Coach (?!?), "Pardon?" Ask the Dutch what they think of Canucks. We're in Afghanistan too, and have taken hundreds of casualties.
Then go find a fscking cave and barricade yourself in!
As a non-native speaker I appreciate such posts, because they allow me to learn about possible misconceptions (including those I actually picked up through Slashdot).
How's about we compromise and stick a tag in the subject line instead (as I did here)? I don't come here to read Miss Manners posts.
[Note, "how's about" is not proper English, fyi. This's English; we steal from all, then mangle to taste.]
It just always bothers me when folks misuse those terms.
Then go find a fscking cave and barricade yourself in! In case you missed it, there's oodles of non-native English speakers on the web, and when *many* native English speakers can't be bothered to even try to get it right, close is good enough for anyone on the web!
Grammar Nazis, fsck off! We're not building the OED here. You're the ones who're in the wrong, not those who're actually trying. Go play Miss Manners elsewhere. We're ostensibly trying to communicate ideas here. I for one don't expect bulletproof linguistic skills when I'm communicating with people from around the world and they're kind enough to try to use my language to do it.
I see that being exposed as luddites bothers them but calling them luddites is not [insulting] them...
To be fair, luddite can be a fairly inflamatory description, depending on the way it's used.
As I see it, it boils down to a combination of: it was a fairly new tech. when these plants were built, they were only expected to be in commission for X many years, they can't be easily or cheaply upgraded, maintained or decomissioned or cleaned up, and corporations are notorious (Bopal?) for cheaping out in every way they can get away with (rapacious shareholders & boards of directors). Toss in a few politicians & the fact that humans aren't generally prescient nor (generally speaking) well educated in the sciences, stir well,... Oh look; a Tsunami.
I like nuclear above the others, but like anything potentially catastrophically dangerous (cf. Chernobyl), it should be respected for what it is and implemented correctly. Often, these things aren't. All this should, and *maybe* could, be fixed, or not.
The "anti-nuclear nuts" are responsible because they chose to use a reactor beyond it's useful lifespan?
Erm, Japan needs power. Fukushima provided power. When told the reactor was reaching it's EOL, permission to replace it was refused. But, Japan needs power, so what do they do? Duct tape and bubblegum patch the old one until they can get a new one approved.
With reasoning like yours, you're comfortable hanging around/.?
IF I DON'T INTEND FOR IT TO COMMUNICATE IT WILL NOT COMMUNICATE!
Methinks you overestimate your abilities. Audited the source code lately? If it's commercial closed source, it could be doing anything behind your back. This even scares the ChiComs and Best Korea into building their own versions.
I hear snort is useful for finding out what all it's doing. nmap it from a local machine too.
Ever wonder why crackers only get consumer data and not highly embarrassing confidential data strategic to companies.
Air gap between between executive offices' LAN and the Production network. The former is easier to secure being much smaller, and less likely to be doing much beyond MS Office stuff, unlike Prod. where damned near everything has to communicate with everything else, and is connected to the net.
How can it be voluntary if you do not really know who you share it with?
They voluntarily shared it with FB. You're supposed to understand (by careful reading of the EULA) that FB's intent has always been to share that with any and all they can.
When the government is pulling that kind of a stunt and people respond back with, "It's my connection, I'll never open it, this isn't fighting for freedom", it makes them a prick too focused on their bandwidth to realize what's happening to their freedoms.
Freedom is not all that's at stake here. I think it's dumb to run an open router, but only because of the crackers and malware that want to use it. If you're running an open router, you're contributing to net pollution.
I'm with the others here who're saying locking down your router is not selfish. It's basic for network sterility.
His exact words. The first thoughts through my head were 1. What does that even mean? and 2. It's fission, idiot.
Those are pretty good, but I thought it was undersea geology teamed with a couple of miles of ocean above, topped off with '60s era nuke reactors run by short-sighted management. The nukes are practically incidental in that overall clusterfsck.
Use your noggin, look around your room, and see where tarrifs actually worked.
JVC, Philips, Philips, LG, Ikea, and I'm pretty sure none of the computer equipment was manufactured here. Nope, you're wrong.
Here's what you miss: all tariffs do is make the things foreigners want to sell your consumers, which they'll willingly pay a premium for, more expensive. That's it. Oh, and it's a tax cash cow, and a subsidy to local producers. Like the Wall St. bailout.
That's the second time I've seen this mentioned. Tariffs don't fix anything. They're hacks and bandaids attempting to fix the real problems. Look into that long and costly pissing match about softwood lumber Canada had with the US. Only the lawyers came out ahead.
It's not entirely clear at this point if the memo is authentic... This could be a flat-out hoax or a statistical anomaly or...
or anything but a story. Have some shame.
O come on, live a little. I think it's perfectly acceptable to report that you've heard wildly conflicting reports from various sources that some fairly sharp folks just perked up about something and said, "Say what? Is that what was predicted?"
It's also educational. Now I know why god particle came in, and learned a few more things about HEPP. It's been a good day.
FTFY. First rule for grammar nazis: while you are at it, learn to proofread. Even atheists know about the "He who is without sin, cast the first stone" principle.
... if the paper turns out to be wrong then it's going to make the entire ATLAS Collaboration look bad
Who cares about looks? Only shallow ppl.
At the pedestrian level of you and I, I agree. However, those getting the funding and those providing the funding very much do need to care about looks (these days, the buzz word is "optics"). A lot of prestige is on the line, and a lot of promises have been made.

I didn't. WTF are you saying?!?
Damn, I hate you AC posers.

Kneejerk reaction: An idea is not responsible for those who hold it.
I've always been astonished at how long it took for everyone then to recognize the menace. Lack of Internet?

Good, because you're also leaving open a free and untracable conduit for any spammer's access to his botnet. Thanks for that.

Clearly? You're sure now?
Yeah, that's probably really helping against BMW, Mercedes, Porche, Audi, ... Oh wait.

Er, all magic is insufficiently advanced. You're saying technology is indistinguishable from magic, in that neither of them ever work?
My tech works great. You're doin' it wrong. Can I have your job?
Cue obligatory Death Star drivel ...

Remember the SSC?
How would he not like it if he doesn't know what it's *really* doing?
