The problem is most universities only offer a Computer Science degree rather than a Software Engineering one, and employers specifically are requiring a BS in Computer Science. I think coding bootcamps are great as I attended one, but there's still a stigma associated with them as bootcamps vary in quality greatly. For example, you have top tier ones, okay ones, and then trash tier ones.
The problem is some students with no job experience or less than stellar resumes will be denied. The joke is on the top coding acadamies that all their students land jobs 97% of the time!!!... because they only select the best with no gaps on their resumes and who already have some coding experience.
I mean, are you suggesting they should just let everyone in? Not everyone is cut out for programming, despite what the government or other people might say. For the coding bootcamp I attended, they tested for three things: programming ability, desire to learn and personality/culture fit (you're a team player and you're not an asshole). Bootcamp prep courses exist for a reason (so people have some background coming into the bootcamp). I came into the bootcamp with no job experience, but I also have a CS degree. I don't think my resume was stellar as I wasn't getting offers or anything. That being said, they didn't require a resume. They just asked questions about why I wanted to attend the bootcamp and whatnot.
As for the extra cash thing, I took a loan out and I don't regret it considering I have a $100k offer that I have accepted. So it's not necessarily limited to those who have extra cash stashed, although it's easier that way.
This reminds me of a Medium article I read last night about StackOverflow and its problems. The thing I like about Reddit is that Karma isn't as important. Like it matters because at a certain point your posting privileges are limited but I feel karma isn't really that important. I think Reddit is vulnerable to gamification, but I feel it just doesn't matter as much. Like there was this "one troll" on r/linux and that person just kept making new accounts. Honestly if I'm on Reddit, I'm just shitposting most of the time if not lurking. But StackOverflow is different. It's supposed to be a community of developers just discussing technical things. And I think I agree with April that the moderation team really needs to do something about the whole issue of gamification and out-group/in-group and reputation.
This is somewhat irrelevant to the point you're making, but the thing I like about Chromebooks is the ability for me to install a community-supported open source operating system. It's the same with the Nexus line and my iPod Classic. With phones especially, there is a limited time frame for security updates. With Chromebooks, Google only provides updates for a specific period of time just like with phones. And the iPod Classic stopped selling a long time ago (I'm using Rockbox on it).
I wish I had mod points so I could mod you up. But yeah the situation is a mess. A lot of tuition is wasted on bureaucracy, and people don't spend money when they don't have money to spend.
I wish I had mod points. I want high school counselors to stop pushing college on everyone because it's not guaranteed to be a good return and for many people they don't need to go to college.
Hmm, it's kind of interesting because I used Scala for a personal project and I just wrote the types out even though Scala does have type inference. But Scala still feels less verbose than Java for some reason.
private var rootGFile: com.google.api.services.drive.model.File = service.files().get("root").execute()
The upside of Chromebooks is that Linux is almost guaranteed to have drivers that work with the hardware. Sure my Celeron 3215U isn't super powerful but it works for my needs. I probably should have gotten a Dell CB13, but eh, maybe in the future.
"...you get Alzheimer's. If you use artificial sweetener you get dementia. Either way you're fucked."
Just get Stevia, it's not sugar and also not artificial.
Sweet.
The nice thing about Truvia is it comes with erythritol. I don't mind the taste of Splenda but it contains maltodextrin and dextrose (so you can measure it), which is still sugar the bacteria in my mouth can metabolize. Erythritol has been shown to be more effective than xylitol.
And the fact that you think the winsys folder bloating in size is actually a negative compared to never seeing this problem is why Linux completely fails at grabbing the desktop market.
If you don't think this is a negative, you're basically saying you don't care about everyone who has a Windows install on a small SSD.
And honestly, I'd say grabbing the desktop market at this point doesn't matter because it's a niche market, plus appealing to the masses is always a bad thing in my experience.
Sure it does. Use Gentoo and compile everything. You do realize many Windows programs have the exact same problem? The only reason you don't notice it is because Windows stores *every* possible DLL ever, causing the winsxs folder to bloat in size.
I've never been that impressed with the experience provided by these multibillion dollar corporations.
Despite all is their resources, they mostly deliver lipstick on a pig. With a custom ROM, at least it's mostly MY pig.
I'm not sure if you're aware of the whole fiasco with the Intel ME, but there are concerns about smartphones for pretty much the same reason. Like there have been bugs found in the ME. So there may be bugs in the phone's firmware as well. https://ssd.eff.org/en/module/...
I came here to say this. People are working their asses off just trying to live, with no financial security. It's not a real surprise that we have a high blood pressure problem. Stress contributes a lot to high blood pressure. And the fact is, corporations don't care. Not to mention how high healthcare costs are in this country.
There seems to be a large bias towards binge watching. I think it's related to our society and the culture of impatience and instant gratification. I'd relate binge watching vs pacing a show out to orgasm vs heroin. Heroin gives a constant steady stream of dopamine release, while orgasm gives you this huge spike. So heroin actually feels better. I personally think taking a small dose of pleasure each day is better for our brains, but what do I know lol.
Well, I trust Chris and he also talks about statistically significant vs clinically significant. But maybe Chris is just trying to mislead people to push his agenda. \_()_/
The epidemiology of saturated fats and atherosclerosis doesn't look good for the old theory that one is caused by the other. Mostly it's been confounded by the fact that intake of preserved meat (which is high in saturated fat) correlates with atherosclerosis. But it's a proxy because intake of fresh meat and dairy and tropical oils, all does NOT correlate with it.
I'm using one as a router but I'm also using 100 Mbps Ethernet which is pretty outdated. The problem really is throughput. In terms of throughput you're actually better off using an old computer, or an Odroid.
Companies don't really want the entry level grad with no experience anyway, it takes too long to train them.
Yeah I interviewed at a Fortune 100 company a month ago and turns out they're not moving forward. I guess I better find a job at a grocery store and contribute to open source. And yeah, so many people are getting into web or phone apps. That stuff doesn't interest me. I'm more into backend stuff, like Compilers, for example.
ChromeOS is technically running the Linux kernel, just saying. It's pretty much Gentoo with a different UI in a sandbox on top.
All code that is natively run is either explicitly vetted by the chain of trust that starts from the embedded controller (the OS and Chrome itself) or permuted such that it cannot escape a narrowly-defined sandbox (NaCl, Pepper plugins, etc). If you have a Chromebook and you're running ChromeOS, it's even better, as the chain of trust starts from the TPM.
I had parents like this and I would do the same thing. I would just get better at hiding my mistakes rather than taking the time to improve, because no matter what I did, it wouldn't be enough.
1. My guess is your computer is far away from your TV, otherwise you could hook it up with an HDMI cable.
2. Probably illegal. I don't think it's as traceable as a torrent. It's like if you download a pirated program illegally from some web page.
Kodi's just a piece of software to play videos. It's the plugins that get you the illegal content btw. Kodi boxes are pretty much a scam ("It’s gotten bad enough that core Kodi developers have threatened to quit in protest.") and you're better off buying a Raspberry Pi and installing Kodi and the unofficial plugins themselves, because they're similar except the RPi has a better community around it and it's a general purpose computer, which can't be said for Kodi boxes.
This reminds me of what my compilers professor said about creating a new programming language. He used Javascript as the quintessential example of why you should think twice.
Even though a bunch of new languages coming out. Thought I want to make a new programming language. Next thought should be “No.” This is how really bad programming languages get out there in the world. Javascript is a good example. Javascript was designed and implemented by this guy who went to the University of Indiana. Made a scheme interpreter. Working at Netscape. Need some language to script webpages in web browser. I know I'll just do it with Scheme. Curly braces lot faster than parentheses. Notation that C programmers will like and call it Java-something for marketing purposes. In a week, came up with first Javascript implementation. No going back. On every computer and phone. Can't make any changes, so many JS programs in the world. Arguably the most widely used programming language.

I've only been in NYC for 3 days counting today and their public transit system is amazing. Everything is connected.

What's interesting is that humans who can't feel emotions have trouble making simple decisions like what to eat.

Like DemoLiter3, I just watch YouTube through youtube-dl or mpv with youtube-dl hook.

Jesus christ dude, you're probably gonna be dead in no time from atherosclerosis.
I'm assuming you're talking about the saturated fat content. It's a myth that saturated fat clogs arteries.
From here:

Mostly it's been confounded by the fact that intake of preserved meat (which is high in saturated fat) correlates with atherosclerosis. Also, I understand you wanting to stay legal, but AFAICT the content providers don't want freely accessible content. Unfortunately for consumers, content providers restrict access to particular programs in specific markets so as to control pricing and TV rights negotiations. For example, if you buy a DVD in the US then bring it home to watch in Australia, there's a good chance it won't work because DVD players in Australia are set to region 4, while discs in the US are encoded as region 1. The same is true of many video games.
