Speaking of usable / user interfaces, what's with the story icon? A bar of soap with a serial cable just doesn't quite scream "GUI" to me.

Unless it's supposed to be a chunky old mouse. Which would almost barely make sense, except it still really doesn't look like it. Perhaps a bad representation of a bad idea. arg.

hrm. yeah. From "about" again, under "Why another Linux?" (Do tell.):

Yoper fills the gap between the guru-only Gentoo or Linux from scratch OS's, and Linux distros used by businesses or home users, that still want the best.

All I've been able to get out of that is "Like RedHat, but cool" or something.

Maybe, maybe they're going for business support. (And are hoping for another dot-com bust, er, boom.) There's hints at developing a better desktop, charging for future functionality, support, and... training? Still, my bullshit meter is running a bit high. As has been mentioned elsewhere, even if it isn't a scam, there's some technical issues. Sure, you can use alien, but then dependencies don't work. Some have said it combines the worst features of other distros / ways to do it.

Aside from that, they use alien to import other distros' packages, set CFLAGS, and possibly want to become the next Lindows... (from the about page)

What is the purpose of Yoper?

Yoper has not been designed to compete with or replace existing Linux distros. However, it will be used to support commercial conversions of office software from Windows to Yoper. These conversions will be done by trained and certified professionals within the Yoper franchise. Most technical issues with conversion can be resolved quickly by typing a few commands or running a few purpose built scripts. We prefer this method to having to develop and support an auto-detection system, that in time itself will become increasingly difficult to support.

So, what?

Other than yet another distro. Possibly with delusions of grandeur. And they seem to want your money.

just to clarify, for the record. heh.

the mac could boot CDs fine. hold down C. I don't recall if that worked just for "blessed" official Apple CDs or what. but from within OF, not much worked. so that box ended up having a hammer taken to it. bam.

but those were the bad old days. on the G4 it works great, and about the only disappointment is there's no boot code on /dev/fan. ;)

Funny. Seems a lot has changed since 1998. MS has always been a fan of counting on hardware to take up the slack for their bloat and, perhaps, incompetence, but it's getting ridiculous. I've seen horrible performance, including page tear, on the latest and greatest MS boxes in MS's own apps. XP makes a 2+ GHz processor feel dog slow. And makes me wonder if the last five years in the computer industry have gone to waste. (Yes.) Examples? How about a list:

• Lag on local apps? Check. (Imagine network transparency. Ha.)
• ...like counting the seconds it takes a context menu to appear
• ...like counting even more seconds when opening a directory and watching the icons pop up one at a time
• ...like not-quite-page-tear in IE; something isn't quite keeping up on a resize
• ...like icons and toolbars getting corrupted, mostly in IE. Real professional.
• Did I mention everything just feels S L O W ? Like what-the-fuck-happened-what's-wrong slow?
• ...and more and more. That's just all I care to remember, or found before my eyes started to bleed.

So yeah, I agree with you. Windows 98 was rather snappy. Seeing XP run on new hardware has all but convinced me I have nothing to gain by upgrading this P2 350. That's depressing, but somewhat comforting that I'm not the only one who's wasted five years. But Microsoft is playing catchup with X in terms of unusability. Yay for competition.

To make a point, Open Firmware works nice *now*. I've seen firsthand the difference between OF on an old Mac G3 and a new G4; it took years to get things worked out. Hopefully Intel won't be cursing PC hackers with years of bugs, missing functionality (older OF versions couldn't boot CDs, or could but couldn't read ISO9660, etc.), and unintelligible DEFAULT CATCH and CLAIM FAILED messages.

Or they might get it right the first time. Or they might use something that already works. I'm not optimistic though.

Nice try, idiot. Maybe every peripheral shipped in the last three years. And even then, maybe. They don't even come close to supporting every product they've ever shipped. Arg. Got a 5+ year old NIC lying around? Even if it uses the same chipset as one you could go out and buy? Good luck finding a driver. Meanwhile, on linux: modprobe, ifconfig, ...there is no step three. :-p Linux actually comes close to your supposed universal support-- and it runs on a dozen other architectures, with all kinds of devices. Funny that. And without a multi-billion dollar marketing^Wengineering budget.

A while back I read something about Microsoft having used some shareware program to create the spinning e/earth logo for Internet Explorer. And said shareware tacked a big CREATED WITH UNPAID TRIAL VERSION OF FOOGIF3K message in the gif comment. Which stayed in releases of IE for quite a while. I'm guessing it stopped after a while, possibly after MS just bought the company. ;)

Damn shame I can't find it now. (Try searching for "shareware gif ie logo" or so, and feel the pain. :p )

Really, though, it's just the same old crap. Business as usual for Microsoft. Hell, they started out by selling someone else's software to IBM.

There really isn't any. Unless, like others have mentioned, you need 64-bit memory access or faster and higher precision calculations. Which "the rest of us" have no use for, and probably won't for years. Or decades, depending on your level of pessimism (software bloat, planned- soon to be enforced- obsolesence, blah etc).

So, long before that happens, instead of doubling um, bits, they could do something generally useful. (Broad and ignorant exaggerations follow...) Like double the number of registers so the CPU isn't just sitting there shuffling things in and out of memory. Or halve the pipeline so the CPU isn't sitting there wasting cycles on the wrong branches.

But that will never happen, because MHz is money. (R)evolutionary development isn't.
