then why deos Microsoft have an entire division dedicated to it? why did they buy 100 million dollars of non-voting stock just to be able to develop software for it?
it's tens of millions of dollars towards their bottom line. it would be less for satellite isps obviously, but i don't know of any Satellite companies that couldn't use a boost in revenue. and all they would have to do is leverage technology they already have on another platform, and take on minimal support costs.
come on, how hard is it to tell someone how to set up an internet connection no matter how it's being done?
i tried for a weekend to get XP to install drivers for my nVidia GeForce2 on an old Compaq. no deal.
Mandrake, saw it right away.
tried to install it on XP on a new PC i just got, it's a home built box with not the best of the best parts but decent, XP never would install on an NTFS partition. errored out with different errors every time.
i have no idea why, but finally for a laugh i installed it on on a FAT32 partition, and it installed with only a few errors.
Mandrake Linux went on with only one error the very first install on this box and runs perfectly.
you don't need to find drivers with Linux apparently, it finds them. even on a cobbled together box like mine.
if you realy want Unix stability and ease of use, along with drivers for everything, there is only one platform...Macintosh baby! If computer platforms are vampires, then Macintosh is the "Blade" of computer platforms.

they lose me in the second half. companies should not be allowed to edit a movie without permission and then sell it, but users should be able to do anything they want to it.

Lindows 2.0.0 Released
·
· Score: 1
this product turned out to be a big disapointment. it was supposed to run Windows apps. actual apps like Office.
but it instead it is just another linux distro with it's only differentiating factor being that it looks like windows(and the website was downloaded from apple.com and slightly edited for content).
it has a cadre of windows-like apps that sound like basically using stripped down versions of the originals. it does include StarOffice, but that is the work of others, does not apply to whether Lindows itself is any good.
it is not the project it started out to be, but the company is trying to pretend that this is just a change of the business plan and not the failure to meet most of it's goals that it really is.
i'd just as soon use KDE and Open, or Star, Office. I can't see a reason for it to exist other than it is a pretty good package of some alternative technologies to windows.
but that app subscription thing sounds lame, and is this thing going to match LSB standards?
NetBSD is for an easy(for Unix) to configure desktop.
FreeBSD is for a powerful server.
MacOSX is if you want all of these things, and still want to run apps you can buy in a store or ones you may actually have heard of. If you need to run Office(the real one), Photoshop, Dreamweaver, the list goes on, and still use all the Linux and BSD software you want to run.
Hope that clears it up:-)
Well, there's obviously no intelligent life at The New York Times. The similarities mentioned were just that, similarities. Those plots didn't even resemble each other.
Besides, a plot is just a framework upon which to build a story. The growth of the characters over the years, the interactions and reactions of people we feel like we know are important too.
I could mention many other nuances of storytelling that are apparently lost on this person of little imagination and even less talent as a writer, but why bother. If you don't get it, stay home, more seats for me and my friends.
actually, doesn't the GPL say that the software released under it cannot be taken private?
doesn't that mean it has to remain free unless all authors of all software and patches associated with a particular project decide to take it private?
i think it does. the GPL exists to make sure that "researchers and freeware authors" will have something to use. it creates an environment where money is not the primary motivator. excellence is.
i saw somewhere in one of these posting where a user said that big money means more developers thrown at a problem. i think the OS movement has proven that opening up the software will throw many more developers, working with many less restraints and therefore more efficiently, at a problem than closed source ever could.
i think we need to support this by buying the software when we can. another point someone brought up was "why Buy" open source when you get no support? you do it to keep the software coming. i think we should expect more than just a repackaging job for the prices some vendors are charging, but i think we should support them.
do i buy everything i use? no, but i do buy some. and i encourage that behavior. i also encourage nude tabogganing. thank you.
Xena is only marginally better than that pitiful jungle slut show that Gena Nolin has going. the only people who like Xena are dateless 14-17 year olds who want her to tie them up and make them play Dungeons & Dragons badly. unless she's an alien that they are going to kill in one episode, i'm not interested.
the show was about mulder. mulder is gone. the show is over. now it's just about chris carter trying to ride this gravy train as long as he can.

i stopped going to EFnet to avoid those RTFMing dateless wonders, and i'm not going back just because there are more of them.

i think we have enough Linux distros.
i mean.... i know it should be free, but that's just because it sucks, right?
