"Even without carbon 14 dating, geologists can study those layers and give a (very rough) estimate about how much time transpired between the most recent known dinosaur fossils and the oldest known human ones."

The geologists haven't been around to watch the transformations of the earth as they occured. How can we be sure that their theories on how these processes occur really be true? Aren't their theories based, at least in part, on carbon dating of the contents of the various layers of earth?

I am curious to know more about the basis of the geological methods of fossil dating, if you (or someone else) can provide a layperson's summary.

I'm exchanging a reduction in rent for web site design on the lease I just signed. That on top of the 20% I convinced him to take off the asking price because I'm quiet, neat, and female, makes the in-town location fairly affordable (no, life isn't fair, but I might as well make the best of it, eh?). In the latter case as well as the former, I think it just takes a geek with enough balls (er...) to suggest an exchange. Granted, that doesn't work for family, since I'm not going to tell my grandma she needs to give me something in exchange for my help, but it sure does for everyone else I've suggested it to.

Can you imagine the fun Dell's tech support would have trying to fix this? "um, oky, run this random program, but FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, make sure there isn't this other program."

This is basically what we tell users at my school. We have a list of programs that they should look for in add/remove programs, then download the fancy version of AdAware. Usually, it works well, although there were quite a few folks who had to reinstall Windows before we figured out the problem...

Personally, I'm suprised that AdAware hasn't changed their system to notify the user that they need to manually uninstall certain spyware.

Yeah, I finished it in the bathroom just a couple minutes ago."

If only people didn't procrastinate (such as on ./) so much while they were working, it might be possible to do some neat stuff with such a proximity detector.

I'd pay for the option to have things like that edited, but if possible it'd be great to get em on the same disc.

If the companies making the movies were really savvy, they would include six or seven different versions in a multi-DVD set. You could pick the rating of the film you wanted to see: R-minus-foul language, PG13-plus-extra-violence, R-minus-plot-plus-extra-nudity. Every movie could be recycled for each member of the family!

(If such a thing were even possible, could you imagine how much TIME would be put into editing it? Ye gads!)

I've wanted to be in a Nielson family since I was a little kid. The concept is so simple and logical: tell the network what you like by watching it, and then they tailor their programming to match what people are interested in.

I'd be fascinated to know more about how they go about selecting families. Do they pick folks who watch a varying amount of TV per day (one hour... three hours... the TV is on 24/7)? What type of information do they collect about the families aside from age and gender? Income? Education? How many families are there all together?

    Off to find answers....

Even if the statements made in the licenses couldn't be upheld in a court of law, wouldn't they still be effective to a certain extent? If you are considering using a pirated copy of software, which would turn you off more, "We will go after you as much as the law says we can." or "We will take your firstborn child, steal your computer, then not let you complain about it to a judge."? Sure, most people don't even read licenses when they're installing software, and some might take the time to check out the legitimacy of the statements, but if it deters piracy, it works.

Not, of course, to say that I like the method...
