    The point of the article is that there is a whole other sense that is being far to underutilized in computing. Not just in debugging, but everywhere. I once read an article about listening to DoS attacks and other hacks as they are happening - why couldn't you listen for bugs? Once you become experienced enough, you can follow the code and know when something is out of step.

    I think it would actually be more useful if you could set auditory points - like breakpoints but with particular sounds - in the code. Another suggestion would be to group the sounds together by instrument or whatever and be able to turn parts of that orchestra off.

    My concern would be debugging a multi-threaded app - yikes! Talk about a need for thread synchronization ...

    Maybe someday we'll have tactile debuggers ;)

    I've been at sea with laptops and desktop machines. The only thing we've ever had to worry about is securing the machines so that they aren't tossed about (especially the monitors). Of course, if you have them on deck and there is a chance of spray, then I guess you'd have to waterproof them.

    By the way, the coolest ride I took was on this.

  6. Speaking of standards ... on GCC 3.1.1 Released · · Score: 1

    I noticed that they have added this optimization:

    # G++ now supports the "named return value optimization": for code like

    A f () {
    A a; ...
    return a;
    }

    G++ will allocate 'a' in the return value slot, so that the return becomes a no-op. For this to work, all return statements in the function must return the same variable.

    This is a wonderful thing, but does this go against the C or C++ specification?

    One day we won't have bodies like ours. We'll in a sense be immortal. We'll have dumped our organic origins for something better. Something that doesn't require as much upkeep. A large portion of what we percieve to be our world won't be real anyway - we'll be interacting through virtual worlds. One day, some people may choose not to have a physical manifestation. They'll live their lives completely in a virtual universe.

    I only hope I'm around when they start uploading consciousness into hardware.
