People who download entertainment they have not paid for are examples of massive entitlement.
You have no claim on content you haven't paid for. To think otherwise is the opposite of virtue.

You forgot to mention the ads. I haven't seen that much content for years. Its only ads, ads ads...

Ah yes, ads. I remember them fondly. Well, actually it's *not* seeing them anymore is what I remember fondly.

I was at a friend's place the other day...he had the TV machine on, and I was astounded by how frequently the program was interrupted by commercials to sell me cat food, tampons, insurance, soft drinks, a weight loss program, automobiles, home loans, mayonnaise, other TV shows, cereal, sneakers, pizza, various kinds of medication, and a slew of other shit I can't recall. It was mind boggling.

It was difficult to follow the program due to all the interruptions (not that I was really trying, TBH).

Do people really watch this commercial-laden shit?

"How Can Programmers Move Into AI Jobs?"

    Easy:

    1) Become a programmer.
    2) Apply for jobs in AI.

  7. They've moved onto MySQL...

And that would be a good move, if they did in fact do that. I know people deride MySQL, but it's light-years ahead of MS Access.

You might not want to run your bank on MySQL, but it's a perfectly suitable database for 98% of the kind of stuff that most companies do on a day-to-day basis. Unless you're sending people to the Moon or doing financial services, MySQL is fine. Tesla, Netflix, Youtube, Spotify, Facebook, Twitter, and the NASA Jet Propulsion Lab all use MySQL on a daily basis and they seem to be doing just fine.

If you don't like MySQL, use Postgresql or SQL Server or IBM DB2. Whatever floats your boat and gets the job done.

If you want to keep your recipe collection in MS Access, great, but for anything more than that, ewwwwwww.

  8. You can wipe every single VM I have and I can restore everything within an hour because they are all configured using salt. The databases are snapshotted every hour and backed up using tarsnap as well as an rsync down to a NAS at my house.

You're the kind of guy I'd want running my IT department.

  9. I did a contract job years ago where they had me work on a mission-critical production database. In MS Access.

Well there's your problem. FFS, who does that??

  10. How the fuck does a new hire have that kind of access?

My thought exactly, which is why I'm a little skeptical of this story. Who hands out this level of access on Day 1?

If this super-newbie was given this level of access on his first day, the CTO and HR and whoever was responsible for making backups should all be fired like a cannon.

  11. Nobody with a brain stores important data on someone elses server.

Yes, that will undoubtedly stop all the terrorists cold. Fer sure. I mean, it's a proven fact that one could commit an act of terrorism without encryption. It's impossible.

Maybe she could ask that they make adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing illegal while they're at it, because that makes just as much sense. And of course she'll make it illegal for government officials and security forces to use encryption too, right? Right?

    c) one off blood pressure readings aren't used to make clinical decisions.
    d) doctors manually taking readings are likely to be off by more than 10mmHg.
    e) depending on the time of the day your blood pressure readings are likely to be off by more than 10mmHg.
    f) depending on which arm you take the reading from will affect your by 3-10mmHg.
    g) depending on how long you've been sitting in the chair at the doctors office will affect your reading by 3-10mmHg

Good list. Sadly, most people are completely unaware of the things you outlined. They measure their BP once and think that's all there is to it. No doctor will use a single measurement to make any treatment decision.

  20. I take my BP meter into the doctor's office, I let them measure my BP with their gear and then I use mine to take a reading for comparison. The readings are (usually) very close.

Note that your BP can vary considerably over the course of just a few minutes depending on your environment and how you're reacting to it. Stress, eating, movement, etc can make the results vary significantly.

Never use any single BP reading as an "accurate" measurement. You normally need multiple readings over an extended period of time to get any real sense of what your BP actually is.

If you take several readings a day under similar conditions at roughly the same times of the day, then you can start to see what your actual BP is. Infrequent, isolated readings are nearly worthless (unless they show an exceptionally high BP, then there's probably cause for alarm).

Take a sitting reading, then a standing reading. Do this a few times a day and record the results (most meters will do this for you). After a week you'll have a much more realistic and dependable sense of what your actual BP is.
