Even if you "turn off" Cortana, it's still running in the background. Try to kill it with Task Manager and it comes right back. There is a way to kill it permanently, but my experience has been that Cortana is the new Internet Explorer -- kill it and you hose your entire system.
One of the problems in this area is that people are writing papers based on information that was true 20 years ago but is no longer valid today, due to the massive increase in bit density of modern hard drives. A single wipe renders data unrecoverable, even with super-secret NSA government magic.
That's the problem with SMART. If it says something is bad, it is. If it says everything is good, you don't really know for sure -- you may just be one bad sector away from hitting the "too many bad sectors to remap them all".
Since it's coming from Lenovo they aren't making any money by installing it, so I really don't understand the motivation for putting useless bullshit on their computers.
I'd simply refuse to enter and request compensation (full purchase refund, parking expenses). If not, take the ticket merchant or responsible venue coordinatator to court and also request compensation for lost personal time. This type of information should be made clear before the purchase is made.
I've grown tired of organizations and individuals encroaching on what I consider others' basic rights for their own personal interests. If you're a live performer, cell phones are not hurting your business.
And it's exactly because of assholes like you that going anywhere, movie, concert, etc., had become unbearable. Fuck you and your fucking phone.
> it's about a fucking school that wants to store private medical details
Schools need at least the student's immmunization records, doctor contact information, history of allergies, and a record of treatments received at the school.
OK. That's a fair point. Except this information was not instantly electronically available in the past and schools seemed to do just fine.
This is another example of "Just because you can do something doesn't mean you should"
"We uncovered an opportunity to improve the way we reward people for their contributions," GE's head of executive development, Janice Semper said. "It will involve being flexible and re-thinking how we define rewards, "
Translation: We're always looking for new ways to screw our employees.
I also fail to found the source, but I remember seen it,
You've seen it because it has been repeated thousands of times by thousands of people. The reason you can't find the actual source is because Bill Gates never actually said it.
People have had years to drop Microsoft. They could start investigating alternatives today. If no alternatives exist for the software they need, they can find ways to code what they need or pay someone else to do so.
Right, because writing an alternative to Photoshop (or any other large complex application) is trivial and I can pay someone to do it in a few days.
This is not about having a backup regime though, is it? This is about an unwanted and forced update which has locked the owner of a computer out of his system..
No, it's actually about BOTH. Yes, Microsoft is evil and what they are doing should be illegal.
However, a very long time ago, when I knew very little about computers, it occurred to me that I should make a backup in case something went wrong. Nobody told me to do it, it just seemed like basic common sense. If you aren't able to revert back to a previously save backup, then you are too stupid to be using a computer.
If you don't have these ticked then Firefox won't block the sites I expect.
Apparently,a lot of people don't understand the meaning of the word "block". Those setting don't actually block anything, they just display a warning which you can ignore.
No one should be stupid enough to buy Yahoo under conditions like that.
No one should be stupid enough to buy Yahoo under any circumstances 9unless Yahoo has assets that can be liquidated for more than the purchase price).
Yahoo is company that no longer has any reason to exist. They are the Radio Shack of the Internet.
If it gets any money.
Yahoo! will sell of the company piece by piece until "Yahoo!" is worth less than $0.
Yahoo is already worth less than zero. Their market cap is less than the value of their shares of Alibaba and Yahoo Japan.
Has /. gotten so young that nobody knows it means something more than just "digital"
Replace "young" with "brain dead editors" and you have your answer.
Microsoft says they will stop trying to push Windows 10 on you after July 29. That's what they say. Whether or not they are lying remains to be seen.
And then I have to re-turnoff Cortana,

"burn a Linux USB"
WTF???
Exactly.
If I could get back all the money I ever spent on pot, I could buy A LOT of pot!!
And where exactly is this "rule" that tells someone that the life of person A is more important than the life of person B?
You apparently have just arrived here from another planet, because that's not how the legal system works here.
I was going to vote for Trump until I read this.

I totally tricked you into thinking you were getting money from me. GOTCHA!!

I used McAfee in the past, but I believe that was after John and the company parted.
John left the company in 1994.
Eventually oil will start running out, sometime in the next few years...
That's what they said in the 70's.
In 1920 it was predicted that the world had enough oil to last 20 years. And that same prediction was made in 1940 and 1960.
For folks who aren't terribly computer savvy (So.. theoretically not Slashdot)
Go get "Never 10" freeware from GRC... it uses the officially Microsoft sanctioned means of permanently disabling the whole "Get Windows 10" stuff
Until Microsoft pushes out a "critical" update and bundles in something that also changes or disables the "officially Microsoft sanctioned" setting.

Sorry but you are a complete moron.

I expect it's covered by these options under security:
[ ] Block reported attack sites
[ ] Block reported web forgeries
If you don't have these ticked then Firefox won't block the sites I expect.

+1
Would buy.
