Ami Pro was/is a good word processor. I still use it. Unfortunately, Lotus came out with a whole new version -- called Word Pro -- and totally f****ed it up.
Yes you are right. Unfortunately, the Patent Office is run by clueless fuckheads and the criminals who control congress refuse to change the laws in order to prevent this sort of thing.
There is no need for moderation/censorship/editing on a message board. None. Zero. Zip. Zilch. Nada.
As a participant in a forum or message board, if you see something "offensive" - IGNORE IT - DO NOT REPLY. If you are the owner of a message board and you are not willing to accept posts that you don't like, then DO NOT RUN A PUBLICLY ACCESABLE MESSAGE BOARD.
It's that simple. Period.
If your ego is so big that you really MUST be in control of what people say, then draw up a bunch of rules and institute a registration process requiring a valid e-mail address. Then, when someone says something you don't like, or violates one of your silly rules, you can play dictator and revoke their posting ability.
The real problem here is ego. Trolls, flamers, assholes, etc. post crap in order to get a reaction and get attention. 99% of them do not have the patience and/or attention spam to conduct a long term campaign. Ignore them and they will go away. IGNORE THEM AND THEY WILL GO AWAY. Unfortunately, too many people are unable/unwilling to follow this simple advice.
I've seen it a million times in usenet newsgroups and various message boards. As soon as people see an "offensive" post their ego immediately kicks into high gear and they launch a retaliatory attack. The whole place becomes mired in attacks and responses to attacks. In the end, the "regulars" blame the trolls and flamers and cite this as another good reason for moderation, conveniently ignoring the fact that all they had to do was ignore the idiots and they would go away.
$16 per month x 4.1 million customers = $787,200,000 per year.
Jeezus F'ing Christ!!! 787 MILLION dollars a year and they are losing money?????? WTF is going on here???
And they claim to be losing 6 Million dollars a week. 6 Million divided by 4 million customers = $1.50 a week. $1.50 x 4 = $6. A $6 per month rate increase would take care of that. How many people would give up cable and switch to DSL or go back to dial-up over $6? Not very many.
A load of total BS. Another attempt to jimmie the numbers and make it seem like the record companies aren't so evil after all. All of the numbers used for expenses are deliberately on the high side. In the end, another attempt to cover up the fact that the record companies earn enormous profits, with only a tiny fraction going to the artists.
"...an artist royalty rate of 15 percent, the record company owes the artist approximately $2.25 per unit sold."
In your dreams. Only the biggest mega-superstars bet anywhere near that much. Many artists get less than $1 per unit sold.
Speaking of the name Pentium, isn't it about time for Intel to get off their ass and think up a new name? When they first decided to abandon their numbering system and not call their next chip the "586", the name "Pentium" was, admittedly, a clever one that implied the number 5.
However, now that we've had the Pentium Pro, II, III and 4 I really think it's time for Intel to use a little creativity. Of course, part of the problem it that Intel was a little too clever for their own good and have now painted themselves into a corner. Sexium, Septium and Octium just don't sound as nice.
I have 2 computers connected to my cable moden thru a hub. One morning I get up and find that my computer won't connect to the Internet. Reboot and everything's fine. But now the other computer can't connect to the Internet. Reboot that one and eveything works fine -- but now the first computer can't connect again. Repeat several times.
Call Road Runner and begin my descent into Tech Support Hell
The next few days are spent explaining to several different people that:
A) I'm paying $10 a month extra for their "Home Networking" feature which allows me to connect more than 1 computer to the same modem.
B) I've had this same setup, with no change in any hardware for 18 months with no problem.
C) The fact that both computers can connect to their network and surf the Internet with no problem would seem to prove that all cables and hardware are working properly.
D) The fact that both computers are unable to connect at the same time -- even though I've previously been doing it for 18 months -- would seem to prove that there must be a problem within their network.
Logical, eh?
Whoever coined the phrase "Like talking to a wall" must have been a Road Runner subscriber. It took 3 days and at least 6 phone calls just to get them to admit that MAYBE the problem is on their end, not mine. And a couple more days to find someone who knew where to look to find the problem and what to do once they found it.
Having used Road Runner since November 1999, I have had very few problems and have generally enjoyed blazing fast speeds for downloading warez and pr0n (the only thing 'Broadband' is actually good for).
When a problem has occured, Road Runner Customer Service has been less than worthless. If you have a problem, even if it's a problem with their system not yours - you are screwed and are in for days (if not weeks) of grief.
On a scale of 1 to 10 they are around Negative 30. They set new standards for stupidity, incompetence and dishonesty.
I'm not even sure that any of them know how their system works or even know how to use a computer.
I've wasted a lot of time on Ebay over the past couple of years. Although *technically* I've never been cheated on an Ebay purchase, looking back honestly I have to admit I've gotten stuck with a lot of junk when I could have bought new items for only a little more.
They made a similar claim -- they had a new video compression technology that was going to change the world. After they blew $20 million from investors it was discovered that this new technology didn't exist and the demo they had been shown was nothing more than a hacked copy of Windows Media Player.
Oh yeah, and the CEO was a actually felon on the lam from the Feds.
Sorry, but there are more people in the world than the 6 that you know.
If there was any justice in the world, nobody would buy XP and it would be a horrible flop. Unfortunately, that's not likely.
We now live in a world where computer manufacturers are gutless cowards who kiss Microsoft's ass and consumers are mindless sheep, too lazy and stupid to try something other than Windows.

Why doesn't Dell use AMD processors in its computers, even though they are faster and cheaper?
Back in the day, when AMD first began producing 80386 compatible chips, Intel sued. AMD's lawyers found some fine print in their licensing agreements with Intel and Intel lost the lawsuit.
So Intel tried again, this time sueing for Trademark Infringement -- essentially claiming that they owned the number 386. In a rare case of common sense by a government agency, the Patent and Trademark Office ruled that numbers alone do not constitue a valid trademark. And so Intel abandoned their numbering system and adopted the "Pentium" trademark.
One of the people who testified on behalf of Intel
during their attempt to claim ownership of the numbers 3, 8 and 6 was Michael Dell.
For that reason alone I will never buy any product made by Intel or Dell
The problem is with the Patent Office. They are understaffed (due to constant budget cutting by Congress) and the people they do have are incompetent (like most government employees) and technologicly illiterate.
As a result, people are able to obtain patents that never should have been issued.
Mandrake's version of Linux is quite nice. I actually bought a copy and like it.
The real question.....now that they have pocketed a few million Euros.......is what are they going to do with that money?
All Linux distros have been handed a golden opportunity by Microsuck. Between the load of crap called Windows XP, Microsuck's arrogance and the Gestapo tactics of the BSA, now is the perfect time for somebody to do some serious marketing of Linux.
Or they could just be like all the other Internet companies and spend the money on Aeron chairs and foosball tables.
I have a computer at work running Windows 3.1 and it's only been rebooted twice in the last 4 years and both of those were the result of power failures. Does that mean that Windows 3.1 is a desirable OS?
Sci fi, IMHO, has contributed greatly to the lack of interest in space exploration. Think about it. We've been to the moon several times. We've sent a robotic lander to Mars that sent back really great pictures.
We've seen all that there is to see on the 2 celestial bodies closest to Earth. We've determined that there's nothing there but dirt and rock. As facinating as it may be to see pictures of the moon or mars the first time, looking at rocks and dirt - no matter how foreign and far away they may be - looses it's appeal fairly quickly.
Thanks to sci fi, we have been able to explore other worlds and see things that -- while entirely fictional -- are much more interesting than anything you'll ever see on mars.
And so, the average person says, why spend billions of dollars -- MY TAX DOLLARS -- on more missions to Mars (or Jupiter, or whatever) when all we're going to get for that huge pile of money is more pictures of rocks and dirt.
The "new" Planet of the Apes is just another exanmple of Hollywood's totally lack of creativity. Instead of something new and original, we get a remake of a movie that was done 3o years ago......... with better special effects.
The movie studios are up to their old tricks. The TV commercials for Jurassic III take bits of the movie and not only re-arrange them out of sequence but out of context as well. The purpose of this, of course, is to make the movie seem more exiting than it really is.
>The user can install or upgrade any system with a single click of the mouse.
>"No OS in the world can meet this requirement"
Huh? Windows has been doing it since '95. The biggest failing of Linux is the lack of a good install program.
