    Just curious... I'm probably one of 4 people in the state that haven't managed to see it yet.

    How much has this movie made so far? I was reading rumours that it was going to be the biggest December release in history or something like that..

    I was just wondering if it has broken any records yet. (Aside from the "Ouch, my ass hurts after sitting for 2hr 58min" record) :-)

    WTF?? Indestructible my ass! My stupid Nintendo (2 of them) required setting a book on top of the thing to keep the game cartridge in place because that flimsy spring mechanism they used failed constantly. Basically every Nintendo unit I've seen has some sort of heavy object sitting on it to keep the game from springing out. :P

    The Playstation? *sigh* Just put the wrong modchip in it... then see how far you get. =/

    I have actually had no problems at all with my Dreamcast. :-)

    Not ALL Quadras were 68040s... ;)

    It's tricky. Some of the Quadra 610s had the 68LC040 processor in them, some had full blown 68040s.
    I've got a Quadra 610 with the 68LC040 in it. I was using it for a DNS server (MacOS 8.1, QuickDNS) for a really long time.

    People that volunteer to work on Christmas usually get PHAT paychecks. :P I usually got stuff like 2 comp days off, double time, or in the case of last year, I billed a nice big holiday dinner for myself to the company.

    I always volunteer to work on the holidays. My family gets together a few days before Christmas, when everybody is actually available. Works out great. :-)
    New Year's Eve? Blah, I'd rather be at work. I can get drunk on the other nights and not put up with jacked up covers, long lines, watered down drinks, and a bathroom line that never ends.
    I get paid more for working New Year's Eve, too. :)

    cups made nothing easier for me. ive had nothing but problems getting the epson stylus 740 working with it for anything other than the linux box itself. staroffice prints ok, netscape prints ok, but certain other apps will spew nothing but trash to the printer. kde's text editor wouldn't print at all. it drove me nuts *just like this keyboard with no functioning shift keys..augh*
    i couldn't print to the printer even though it was shared via samba from win2k. 98? worked fine.
    can't find anything about sharing a printer under linux to a mac, either.

    i gave up, and stuck the usb printer on my win2k server and installed the printer services. it's been somewhat stable...so far. at least i can print from the macs again.

    I've got a few friends that used to NEVER see over 768.... but now they're seeing nearly 1.5 quite often. At least in this area, the "power users" (kids sucking down gigs of porn constantly, gnutella, etc..) are no longer soaking up all of the bandwidth. It's being shared. In a fairly nice way.

    the only people that i know of that are complaining are the same folks that think getting 6mbit down for $40/mo is too expensive.. and they wanted it cheaper.

    Come on, people. Be realistic here...

    HP Netra on the right, actually. DLT drive. Home-brew PCs...

    Also on the left are 2 Power Mac 6100/xx class machines. They're the external DNS servers, running QuickDNS. Haven't had a single hiccup with them, despite the fact that they're basically being slashdotted daily. One of the machines that isn't visable in the photo is a box hosting a web counter that has over 15,000 users (http://www.darkcounter.com)

    internal DNS, mail/web, firewall box, another web server, RAID array... some of the machines are colocated for friends (I have a 1.1mbit SDSL line)... a lot of it is for learning stuff. :-)

    I've got 2 loaded racks downstairs. (Click here to see most of them) and my power bill is about $200/mo. I'm in Sacramento, so we're not getting screwed over by PG&E. I'm still getting screwed over, but it hurts a whole lot less than the PG&E type of screwing.
    I've also stopped using major appliances and have started using the laundromat again, but hey, at least I have a ton of blinky lites downstairs. :D

    I hate to break it to you, but the Crusoe has pretty much been a flop. I've seen a few cool things, like the server blades that RLX makes, but I haven't really heard of them selling too well.

    $49.95 for unlimited airtime and no roaming charges is really not that expensive. Quite a few people pay that for their cell phone as it is now.

    This is a heck of a lot more useful than streaming video over your cell phone or trying to check email from a cell phone.

    I tried their samples on my G3 (tried it with IE 5) and it loaded the website, brought the Schlotzky or whatever, played it once, and *WENT AWAY TOTALLY*

    If this means the end of that goddamn "punch the monkey" flashing blinking seizure inducing banner ad crap, then I'm all for it.

    i would much rather see ads that just GO AWAY after they annoy you. The problem will come when people start making these things pop up every 5 minutes or something...

    That's excellent news! However, it doesn't change the fact that I'd need to spend a few hundred on new hardware. :-) Since the PC rarely gets used, I don't feel like putting any money into it.

    I love my dxr3 tho. And I have a Voodoo 5 5500 for a video card. I'll be able to use that in a linux box.... if I ever build another one.

    ...there are still a lot of devices that have no Windows 2000 drivers. I'll have to buy a new video card.I'll have to buy a new DVD player and decoder card. My USB webcam will no longer work.

    I've seen plenty of drivers left in beta for well over a year. And they're in beta because they're highly unstable.

    Windows 2000 is not worth the money I'd spend in new hardware. I'll stick with 98SE..the PC rarely gets used anyway.

    He hit it right on the head:

    5) Useable UNIX - escape the MS tax AND teach the kiddies some UNIX all at the same time (that was my requisite karma whoring). I could actually see this being fairly useful, though. Only give the kids user privileges in OS X, and make them find someone with root access in order to install programs. "Okay little Billy, tell me again why you need Starcraft for school use...". This also solves any problems that might stem from some jerk trying to erase important parts of the system.

    Someone else mentioned that their students do nothing but use AIM all day. Sounds like piss poor management, if you ask me. Mr UserChrisCanter4 here has the right idea - don't let the kids have admin privs. on the iBooks. Problem solved. No AIM. No Starcraft. No Hotline. No kids trashing the Finder.

    If you people would prefer to give them all Windows 2000, I'm sure Compaq would love to have the contract.....

    So, which would you rather have?

    Great, now whining comments get modded up. Anyway, it seems that for every person that had issues getting the update, there were 2 that had absolutely NO problems visiting a number of retailers and getting their update CDs.

    I know a few people that got several copies of the CD. Yes, a lot of places ran out, but they at least *admitted* that they had run out.

    It wasn't the huge fiasco people are trying to make it out to be. 1)Have you ever seen another computer company do stuff like that? I have not. 2)You know how people are, the ones that didn't get what they want will squawk the loudest....

    I thought that you could legally clarify spamming as "unauthorized access to a computer system" in some states. If this is true, and this treaty is an "international one" then maybe perhaps something can be done about the thousands of stupid morons that actually believe SPAMMING is an effective and acceptable business practice.

    I'd love to see spammers get labelled "hackers" and smacked down appropriately. However, I do worry about those testing their own network security and those of us that actually *follow* guidelines being persecuted as well. :-(

    Excuse me, you clueless git. Have you ever heard of educational pricing? In a circumstance like this, Apple would be more than willing to give a substantial discount to the schools (they already do give an education discount - up to 50% on some products)

    I am so f$@#$@ing SICK of hearing "Macs are tooo expensive.."
    It's going to cost me 1/2 the price of a new G4 (with my educational discount) to get my Windows PC up to the point where I can install Windows 2000 (not even talkin' XP...)

    With PC trash, you just spend your money in smaller chunks, but you're still paying quite a bit.

    ...or just open up 2,000,000 insecure default Red Hat installs on the world. That would look just GREAT for everyone if they put 2 million Red Hat Linux boxes in schools and all of them were compromised within days. The pro-M$ crowd would stand up and say "See? This wouldn't have happened to a WINDOWS machine!"

    Red Hat had better be prepared for a LOT of seemingly mundane support issues to come flooding through their doors. It would also behoove them to actually get in touch with LUGs in the area to see how they can assist with the training/support/etc of these 2 mil. RH boxes.

    This is a very nice thing of them to offer, but it could also backfire in a huge way if not done correctly.
