"we'd probably still be looking at a computer in every 100th home, and no gaming or online community to speak of besides Nethack, university email accounts, and usenet."
And you know what?
WE LIKED IT THAT WAY.:P~
No spam, no trolls, just usenet porn and hours of nethack and *useful* email...ah, those were the days..
I saw it here in Sacramento, California and I didn't see one single cloak, magic wand, cape, pointy hat, or owl in the entire theatre. There was a loooong line before the movie started, but once everybody got in and got a seat we could see that there were still plenty of seats available. I mean *plenty* of seats. This was a 10:20pm showing on opening night...
My girlfriend absolutely loved every second of it. I have not read the books yet, so while the story was interesting, it did seem to drag on quite a bit.
I did like the "chessboard as a gate" bit near the end, tho...
I bet they're going to try the same tired line of "Well, in this dynamic market, we need to experiment with sources of revenue..blabla..."
They're *already* charging people something like $399/yr, in addition to the stuff being installed on your vehicle, and NOW they're going to try throwing ADVERTISEMENTS at you?
Screw *that* - I'll just drive around with my happy Garmin eTrex GPS unit. At least it doesn't feel the need to inform me of a sale at Macy's.
On the flip side, Onstar really CAN find most anything. Our crazy friend Bill called Onstar and asked "Where's the nearest tittie bar?" and we had the answer within seconds. Gotta love that kind of service.:-)
I've had extensive experience working in air cargo and we were usually the equal to the apes in the samsonite adverts... but dude, this was VERY poorly packed. It sucks to see a nice G4 damaged, but the photos are proof - this should have been taken to a UPS shipping center (Mail Boxes Etc or something) and insured. At the very least, he should have used the original packing material or gone to a local Mac shop and asked them for an empty G4 box.
We accidentally ran an entire cookie sheet of Gateway computers out of the lower deck of a 747-400F before and they crashed to the ramp below. None of them were seriously damaged despite damage to the packing material.
And the UPS insurance? It's worth buying. Another thing to ALWAYS do is PHOTOGRAPH THE PACKING JOB **BEFORE** SHIPPING IT. That way you have some evidence that you didn't ship it out in a box that was ready to disintegrate....
Of course,/. rejected it.

They're still blocking Mac email clients (Entourage, Outlook Express... their own bloody products) from connecting to Hotmail, citing "security upgrades" on the Hotmail mail servers.
But the Windows clients (OE) can still connect just fine.
awstats (awstats.sourceforge.net) for the IIS logs, but it's kind of funky to set up...
and webalizer (www.mrunix.net/webalizer) for the Apache logs.
awstats is Perl, too...
I've used them both and since I have only Apache to log, I've stuck with webalizer. Plus, you can easily customize it for each user/domain with its own webalizer.conf file.
Dr. Bott rocks - they also make other cool products like the G-head, so you can use Timbuktu/etc. Oh, and they're the only people that make decent 4 port ADB KVM switches...
On the PCs here we've got an 8port Belkin KVM. It's been working fine. They're just servers, I'm not trying to run 21" monitors to play Quake off them...

That has to do with OS X. The original post was about MacOS 9.2.
I'm the ONLY long haired linux user that I know of. It's the rest of you tie-wearing short haired geeks that are the problem. Us long haired folk are happy to just sit back, relax, and play Quake all day.:)
I livein Sacramento and have yet to actually hear of anybody getting winfirst's service. I've heard projected rollout dates, and "we're adding infrastructure" but for now, they've only dug up holes in the streets and done a poor job of cleaning up after themselves.
I just stick with DSL downtown.. I'm less than 1,800 feet from the CO. Works great for me.
..because it's still going to get bounced through unsecured servers in foreign countries w/o laws like the US has. You'll still get "HOT SEXXX" messages, but they'll be from spammers in Brazil.
All the laws in the US aren't going to stop annoying spammers from other countries. *sigh*
If you sell it, you're implying that it's actually worth money.
Give it away. Give it to the Red Cross. Give it to a local church. Leave it in a box that says "FREE SOFTWARE" on the side of the road. Trade it to a friend. Find a used software shop that might want to buy it from you...
I understand you were a newbie, but had you checked their site(http://support.caldera.com/caldera/search)and typed "swap" or "slow" or "sluggish" you would have found many solutions to this problem. They addressed the issue and posted the workaround for it very quickly.
I use Caldera OpenLinux and SuSE 7.x at home, and I am very happy with both distributions.
Yup. All those millions of iMacs & G4s & PowerBooks sold. Looks awful. How about all those copies of Mac OS X (you know, the BSD based operating system)...yup, just awful.
Please tell us more about this "virus" you speak of.
As far as "web solutions that no other platform can do"... check out WebObjects. Runs on MacOS X.
The article actually says that one of the goals is "Self-configuration. New machines, network links, and resources should be automatically assimilated."
Translated: "Microsoft will take over every machine you put your filthy little hands on. Nyah!"
And it gets worse... "The administrator inserts a Millennium installation DVD disk into one of the machines and the system propagates across the network. After evaluating the network topology and hardware resources, Millennium might suggest that one of the more powerful machines (a "server") be moved to a different network location for best performance."
Translated: "Windows Millenium will infest your entire network whether you like it or not. Then, it will hunt out the Linux machines and demand that it be installed on those as well."
Now if those aren't goals of a company that plans on taking over the universe, I don't know what are....

Either way, it's a horrible thing to have happen.:(
Interesting, because the architect that designed the building was on ABC news earlier stating that the buildings actually had a solid steel core running in the center of the building.
Jet fuel (Jet-A) burns at a very high temperature, and it was eventually enough to melt the steel core of the building, which is most likely what caused the collapse.
Again, this is just what I heard on ABC news today....
(I know a few structural engineers and they confirm this as well)
I have a feeling that the little decoder app or whatever you need to download to get the extra stuff on the CD is Windows only.
Great. Not only are we being told that we cannot make legal copies of CDs we purchase, we're being told that we need to use Microsoft Windows in order to utilize the entire CD. That is pure bullshit. *sigh*

It does?!?! Oh crap.. oh well, I guess that's what I get for grabbing the first CD I saw lying around the office.. arrrgh..
:)
Good thing RAM is cheap.
In truth, it's running ok on a 700mhz Athlon, 256mb RAM. It doesn't do a whole lot but act as a DC, and "fun with IIS!" box. *shrug*
