Here in the city I live in, pay phones were removed because it was alleged that all they do is draw drug dealers and prostitutes.
I've never seen either hanging around..
And to think all this time I was under the impression that pay phones attracted people that wanted to make phone calls. Imagine that!;)
1)2.3mbit SDSL line. Kid with DivX movie has ISDN.
2)DivX sucks on a slower machine.
3)Not everyone owns a CD burner.
Even for the competent, it's still better to support your local video shop. (Not Blockbuster)
Great, the site advertises "Net Detective" - yet another piece of crap that spammers advertise.
I punched my own business phone number into that site and it came back with horribly inaccurate information. So, I went through the phone book and entered more numbers. All of them either "Not found!" or wildly inaccurate.
Oh, that's very easy. Wind up in ChexSystems, thanks to the idiots at US Bank.
I haven't had one single credit card company or financial institution send me any junk mail in 5 years. Ugh.
Or, avoid buying checks printed by the Deluxe Corporation (the company that owns ChexSystems) because if you do, you open yourself up to tons of junk mail. They've been very well known for selling your information (financial information included) to third parties that specialize in sending junk mail. I found this out after wondering why I, someone that wasn't making any money and had no bank account wasn't getting any credit card offers while my roommate that made $50k + was constantly getting "Platinum VISA card - preapproved!" offers in the mail.
Advertisers suck. They'll leech whatever information they can just so they can hurl junk mail at you.
They're usually huge files.
You finally download one, and find out you need a newer version of DiVX;-) than you already have..
You have already moved mp3s off the hard drive to store this movie..
You fire it up, and it's blurry or is missing chunks of the audio track..
It's about that time where I say "Screw this" and go to my locally owned video store and pay $3 and just rent the damn thing.
Or to avoid being "just a consumer" I'll REALLY stick it to Da Man by making my roommate rent it.. using HIS video rental card. Yeah! Phuck da Man!:P
It's a hell of a lot quicker for me to walk to the video store to rent a movie than it is to download one. And besides, my TV has been feeling lonely. That's what I bought the damn thing for, to watch movies. The computers are for Quake.
If wiring is going in the walls, I think it needs to be plenum rated, not the cheaper kind of non-insulated cable.
I'd hate to see someone void their homeowners insurance policy by learning that *after* their house burned down because they left the Pentium III on again....
That way they won't lose important stuff.:P
205 laptops going missing (even if it is since 1997) is still a rather alarming number, considering their contents.
Maybe they should chain them to the owners.:)
How about we just upgrade to MacOS X Server instead?
Share the same sharepoints with Samba and Netatalk?
Use FTP? After all, it's Linux, so you've got an FTP server capable machine.
Transfer via HTTP.
Hell, install Carracho on something.. that works too.:P~
This is the same kind of stuff that we could just punch into Google if we really wanted.
Personally I don't care if Campbell's Soup is being sued or has lousy profits, I just want to eat my can of soup and go on with life.
It's kind of interesting how they mention the debocle with Digital Convergence threatening people that wrote Linux drivers for the Cat, and then only have a Windows version of the software. With no source available. Jumping on the ol' "let's make money with this Linux thing" bandwagon? If the Linux version was so easy, why didn't they make one... and where's the source?
I'm not at all surprised by reading that.
Any of you that are obviously haven't flown on Aeroflot recently. Oh my god, the Ilyushin Il-62M is an absolutely horrifying piece of hardware. I'm amazed it flies at all. Especially since Aeroflot has no concept of "weight & balance" at all.
However, all of the Russians that I know are very proud of their heritage, and very proud of their space program. I've gotta admit that even though it was kind of a scary thing, Mir was pretty cool.
I just wish it would have hit that target because damn it, I wanted my free taco.:(
MacOS X's "Mail.app" has a feature to bounce email as undeliverable. Sure, you still end up seeing the spam, but I've noticed a significant decrease in spam since I've been bouncing it all back.
Most of the spam that gets through to my other accounts came from the WhoIs info on my domains.
Oh, and I got stuff to "hostmaster@***.net" claiming that it had opted-in for spam. More proof that this opt-in stuff doesn't work as well as it's cracked up to be.
Just took a look in the directory...
blogger.html
blogger.html.pyra
blogger.html.pyrabak
In the "archive" directory I created, there's no less than 28 files with a.pyra or.bak or.pyrabak extension and 19 "TEMP" files.
Obviously they've changed it a bit, because when I used it, it was a confusing pain in the ass and yes, it did scatter files everywhere.
Easy, they'll look at you and say "Thank you!" and let you on the plane.
It's the guys on the ramp that'll take the bomb and say "Hey, this looks cool! Let's make a beowulf cluster out of them!"
They must have changed it, because I had no less than 15 files with extensions such as.bak scattered all over the directory.
The rest of your comment was flamebait. I'm certainly not the only one that thought it was a total mess.
Airlines ask you for ID because they want to make sure that you are the person that originally bought the ticket and aren't some terrorist that stole a ticket or obtained it through other illegal means. Did you notice that they only glance at your ID and never actually do anything with it? Crazy people like taking out aircraft much more than they do trains.
Than what? I tried it before, and I got sick of it, really quick. They were always having server problems, and since I'm not an HTML guru I never could figure out their tags and actually make sense of anything.
Blogger was also horrible at keeping track of archives and I suppose it's better if you like having literally dozens of little files named stuff like pyra.bak scattered all over your directory. It's really good at pooping files everywhere.
You can embed LiveJournal into your own website as well and it's WAY easier to update. All you need to do is go to the website or go here and download a client for your operating system. Yes, there's an OPEN SOURCE Linux client as well. *grin*
As far as Blogger sucking because its source isn't open.. I don't quite get that, but to each his own. Not every closed source project sucks. But for those of you that are concerned, LiveJournal's source code is open source now, and I believe the clients are as well.
Wait, they get spied on too.
How else would the cops know that Jebadiah was selling crack cocaine at school again?
That TV licensing stuff is strange. I've actually never heard of it. What do they consider a TV? Would they consider a PC with a TV/FM video capture card and a VCR plugged into it to be a "TV?"
See? The things that I miss by not owning one of them new-fangled TV things.
Wow, I've never logged in and seen 0 posts before.
Anyway, it seems to talk about research projects quite a bit.
Wouldn't that be classifying Linux/Open Source software as one big neverending shareware project?
And wouldn't this clause here:"(A) The taxpayer uses the software in an activity that
constitutes qualified research (other than the development
of the internal-use software itself);"...pretty much exempt open source software? I don't know how it would qualify as "qualified research" and that last bit leads me to believe that development of the software itself doesn't qualify you for a tax break.
I may be wrong. I have enough trouble filing taxes as it is.;)
Heh. Cute. Since the tools are OPEN SOURCE, they all run so much faster on a single Pentium III/700 than a "quad processor Sun E220" running that NON OPEN SOURCE operating system. Of course! How could anybody have missed that?
Quick, someone tell AOL/Netscape/OtherLargeCompaniesThatGet50,000,000H itsPerDay to get rid of the racks of Sun boxes, they're doing it all wrong! Just handle all the page views/database stuff on a Pentium III/700 with "Linuxgruven" stickers all over it!
Remember, (courtesy of Beaterz.com)"Stickers = Performance!"

That's an Entercom station.. maybe Clear Channel owns them, I'm not sure.
Regardless, it boils down to greed. People want more and more money, and what a better way to get this money than to milk the cash cow called "The Internet" for every penny they can squeeze out of it.
Meanwhile, those of us that actually enjoyed listening to online radio broadcasts from stations around the world get screwed. Because a union wants more money.
This just makes me wish for the "good ol' days" when websites above 50k were considered "horribly bloated"
Now we've got a contest to see who can write a small webpage.
Why? That's the same stuff we did years ago simply because we *had* to!;)
Chances are, they bought ad space for 6 issues or something like that.....
You know, like bands that get stuck with a 3 album contract but break up after 2 albums.
Why else would we have "The best of Silverchair" CDs out?
Huh? What?
I got a pile of "Linuxgruven" stickers from the Linux World Expo shows, but they most certainly didn't come from the "Linuxgruven" that's being sued - they all came from the people at http://www.linuxcare.com
Which stickers are *you* talking about?
Great, this whole "Let's put LINUX on everything!!!" crap is going to do nothing in this case but put more money in Microsoft's account. Sell more X-Box units. Microsoft can then say "We sold millions of X-Box units!" because they won't be able to differentiate between gamers and idiots drooling over installing Linux on them.
Don't buy a fucking X-Box for linux, for fucks sake...
next thing we know, life is going to be like one big long episode of "Max Headroom" that never ends. ;)
Heh. Who will have the "off switch" installed?
Here in the city I live in, pay phones were removed because it was alleged that all they do is draw drug dealers and prostitutes. ;)
