My neighbor eats > 200lbs of flour/bread (she bakes), a few gallons of cooking oil and 50lbs of sugar per year. I know this because I buy it in bulk from costco for her (she doesn't have a membership) and is thin I'm really shocked at how much and what she eats and have commented on this to my friends many times (and no, she doesn't have pets or visitors to give away and is retired). Also, she is from Greece and only eats home made food.
Wait until some corn and potato epidemic comes along and wipes out 94% of the world's food supply for three years and we'll see who nature has advantaged. The fat people will be skinny and everyone else.....
If the point of evolution is to preserve the genes, it makes sense not to provide every copy with identical traits.
So he fuck what? Stuff is so cheap now. I've made less than 30k for the last ten years, am working on buying my third house and running out stuff to buy. Really, honest. Opportunity that never existed before is there if you want it.
Not too long ago, fewer than 10 years ago, people here used to get excited about developments like this and all the new technologies it would enable. Print a monitor or any sort of electronic circuit on a piece of cheap paper for pennies, no more big polluting factories. Download and print a cell phone, print a wall size monitor. It's what all the nerds wanted.
Now nerds want comic book movies and to complain about the doom and gloom of the future. Well good luck with that. The enlightenment is dead, long live romanticism. I hear there's a new zombie move coming out.
You should have been here at the end of 2008. Perfectly livable (as evidenced by the many people living there) 40 year old tract houses were being sold as low as 10k! A friend of mine (fellow engineer) took all of his savings, around $200k, and bought a bunch, fixed them up and now rents them for $1500/mnth. Not to mention now that the market as recovered, they're worth 10x what he paid for them (with cash).
There are a lot of immigrant dense neighborhoods around and people without a lot of money need places to live. On top of that, many have good blue collar skills and can improve the house while living in it for reduced rates.
There is no such thing as digital, unless you are talking about quantum mechanics. All digital phones, even digital computers, are fundamentally analog systems. Digital means that you ignore all signal level below a threshold. Something like -55dB/decade.
Unless we see some truly shocking advances in module efficiency
It wouldn't work with 100% efficiency, so why would increase in efficiency matter as far as making it practical? What is happening to critical thinking skills?
Yeah, I don't know what it's like now, but that scenario was about twenty years ago. Having spent a lot of time in real socialist countries (and not the wealthy Nordic countries, which are in fact capitalist) socialism is about the last thing any sane person would want. People need to travel and eperience more of the world.
I recently read an interview by Danny Elfman and he had a great answer to a question:
My attitude is always to be critical of what's around you, but not ever to forget how lucky we are. I've traveled around the world. I left thinking I was a revolutionary. I came back real right-wing patriotic. Since then, I've kind of mellowed in between. It affected me permanently and totally.
Cars are about the worst investment that you can make. They're largely for showing off how much money you have to waste. Maybe boats are worse.
I can buy low cost house for not much more than a new car and turn it into source of income. Given this choice, I'll keep driving my 30 year old POS (that works perfectly well BtW) and buy more houses.
After waiting in line for few hours once, I was told that I filled out the wrong form and would have to start over. I asked the lady why they didn't have a sign indicting which was the proper form and she said that a lot of people asked this question and some people put up their own signs to warn others, but the dmv made them take them down.
I moved to another state that allowed privately owned offices to handle routine things like license plates (DL testing still were state run). I was in and out in 5 minutes, they didn't even have chairs for waiting.
Theory and practice are two different things.
Do you see anything wrong with spending all of your money on frivolous things during the good times and then be the stuck with a bill during the bad times? How do you enforce discipline on something that has resisted it for millennia? Maybe we should figure out that problem first.
I did and assumed hat's what the DaVinci machine did, but it is only telemanipulators. Baby steps.
For a similar technological use, think of a remote rover driving around autonomously with a few geologists monitoring the 360 degree video feed. When one sees an interesting rock, they click on it and the rover drives back to autonomously investigate further. On something like a planetary probe such a machine could easily out perform an astronaut (with enough eyeballs, all problems are shallow) even with 30 minute time delay.
I studied nuclear physics and would say no without a lot of extra curricular study. Beyond that, you need the materials, so unless you are in contact with some Libyan terrorists, no.
I think you are looking at it too anthropomorphically. Thinking as communication = subject, verb, adjective object where a higher level being my have no such concepts. They may even be mostly unaware of a physical universe for all we could know and think something like happy happy sad happy sad to convey states which we are incapable of understanding. Their concept of reality might be totally incomprehensible to us and may not even recognize that we are alive like a creature out of Flatland.
Hypocrite much?
Our family never had a lot of money, we very rarely went out to eat and I had to cook from about 12 years old. It's not hard and any kid can do it.

The computational universe

No, a house that will pay for itself with tenants. And who cares if you want to die, I'm just in it for the money.
SLS were the first 3d printers back in the 80's.

Camera is inside the rocket facing a small downward pointing mirror.
Hah...not really. I just don't drive a lot, and when I do it's mostly long distance highway. It's only been washed twice (and not by me).

What abut owner-operated truckers? There lot of those.
I see nothing really wrong that.

the benefit be $733/month, or $8,796
My parents get ~$40k/year from SS. If bi is paid for by eliminating SS, they will not be doing very well if you chop their benefits down to $18k/year.
I'm surprised ...

but it certainly would be connected to the LAN.
Why?

How about controls research (the same field that brought yo driverless cars) like this?
