if last.fm is making it on $3, they can raise their price to $4 and more than cover the 30%.
I missed the part where you showed why they would jump to $10
they'll charge more. It could be $5. Or they could raise it to the competitors like Zune which is $10... It seems everyone is either in the $3/mo tier, $10
It seems to be somewhere in there, but I don't think you fully explored that thought.
aw man, until I read this comment I was thinking of getting an iPad, but since I can assume from what you are saying there is no way to read.pdf s on the iPad I guess you saved me a lot of headaches.
there's pretty much no way an iPad app like this is going to consistently bring in enough money to pay off the initial investment, or even keep up with the weekly costs.
There is a pretty simple way: they get more than 500,000 subscribers each paying $1 a week.
There are 8M iPads out there right now, they just need slightly more than 1/16th of those to get a subscription.
You may be saying that isn't possible and you are entitled to your opinion.
I have no idea what will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised to see it succeed (or fail).
Assuming they sell 100% of their subscriptions through iOS apps
the number I have for last.fm is $0.00075/play
Maybe that number is outdated.
last.fm pays artists $0.00075 per play
you are right. If last.fm is selling all their subscriptions through iphone apps they will have to raise the price more than $1.
It is still less than $5, and much less than $10
assuming 100% of their subscriptions come from iPhone apps
if last.fm is making it on $3, they can raise their price to $4 and more than cover the 30%.

How many bands are going to 1) be satisfied with minimum wage and 2) get 1.5M plays per month ?
Just some more questions. I'm not trying to argue.
that's what artists say subscription services are doing to the music industry

there's no limit to the amount of money you can lose shorting a stock.
AppleCare covers software
I read comments from them all the time but I never see them.
seems like they love their phones, or something.
excellent hardware at the time, but because it is locked to at most Android 1.6, it essentially is useless six months after release.
hahahaha
Everything is amazing, nobody is happy.
$20? Nice. I'd have an iPhone right now if that was the monthly cost here in the states.
Heck I'd buy an iPhone that didn't do data (other than wifi) for $20/month.
affordable data plans. Every high-end smartphone has that now
ha
If telcos want to expand the market much farther they need to lower the monthly cost.
I think it is funny that people talk about various phones' prices. With a $70/month 2 year contract, they are all practically identical.
word of advice, sometimes people on /. are sarcastic ;)
true
plus,
why would this be an app?

Perhaps they have a group of dedicated content producers who all get paid and work in a location.

if only we were so lucky that News Corp was the greatest evil in our world today
you have RTFA
without saying anything much.
I love how they try to pigeonhole the iPad into a "consumption" role when there are thousands of examples of things created using the iPad.
Kinects?
as far as I'm concerned I've never had an apple mouse I didn't like.
