  1. Re:cd players.. on Can Cell Phones Ignite Gasoline Vapors? · · Score: 1

Happened to me also a couple of months ago with a CD-R and a 48x drive. The front panel of the drive just blew off with a bang. The CD was in a pretty good condition and I had been using it for less than a year with no problems.

Luckily nothing more than a little silver/plastic dust escaped the drive's metal case. Since that episode I've moved my computer on the floor so that the CD-ROM drive doesn't point at any of my 'vital' organs...

  3. Openoffice.org and the pain of submitting bugs on Submitting Bug Reports To Open Source Projects? · · Score: 1

I really like the idea of us end-users submitting bugs and so helping the development of all this wonderful software (mozilla, openoffice, eclipse, etc). Currently there is just one thing that prevents me switching from MS Office to openoffice: a bug with the openoffice and Matrox dual-head [http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id= 3428]. (Basically some of the program's menus are centered with the Matrox quickdesk utility and every menu appears always at the first display even if the program window is at the second display). I have previously submitted a few bugs about Mozilla and even managed to get one fixed, so I should know the basics of bugzilla which is also used by openoffice.org.

Ok, so I tried to get this one fixed also. I tested and tested the various situations that caused misplaced dialog boxes and menus. I even searched the Matrox's forums for more information. Then I tried to submit the extra info to the bug 3428...

The horror! After registering to buggzilla, joining to various developement projects, waiting to be accepted as a member of those projects, and a dozen "You aren't authorized to submit this information" -messages later, I finally gave up. As a result of this it will take a looong time before I'll try openoffice again. I think that there is something fundamentally wrong with a bug submitting process if the average user cannot post his information in a snap. In fact, dumber people (like me) than the average user should be able to submit bugs easily.
