Not really. That "cost" above the salary is referred to as the "fringe rate". The company that I work for has the fringe rate set at 25%, which is a little low. An average fringe rate is generally 35-40%, not 100%

When you hire someone through a temp agency or contracting agency that fringe rate is built into that. If as a contractor you're being paid 25/hr, the agency is billing you out for at least 35/hr, probably more.

And yes - I do work for a HR Department.

Computers are actually the most disease ridden thing in a hospital. When the nurse or doctor walks up to the computer in the hallway to punch in an order for medication or x-rays or something, they forget to wash their hands usually. Swabbing keyboards and growing the bacteria found in them is quite often a scary proposal (i.e. if you're going to find flesh eating bacteria anywhere in a hospital, it'll be in a keyboard)

ahhh - but they're very inter-related. Lets say you have an application that sends out 1024 byte packets. On a 28.8 serial link - that would tie up the line for approx 35ms. This becomes a problem with time sensitive data - if your real-time data is stuck in a que behind a large packet - by the time the large packet has gone through the line your packet is late.

there any ways of dealing with it - ie fragmenting large packets to allow time-sensitive ones to fit down the pipe.

first of all the 5-4-3 thing is not a rule - just an approximation. And - it only works for 10baseT - not 100.

and it does deal with the collision domain - but only the time it takes for a collision to be reported - not the total time to reach a destination. ie - it may take a packet 6 seconds to reach it's destination, but the collision domain is only until it hits it's first switch or router. If there's a collision after the switch or router - that device deals with the retransmission of the fsckd packet.

    hope that makes sense.

Well - not a $30 sound card - but you could get pretty good results with a $600 sound card and $1500 external DAC. But did you actually read the website? I'm assuming a significant part of the $20K is the fact that it's touch screen controlled and has the ability to serve up many different streams at once (5 i think) in addition to offering superb quality.

Don't forget - just because it's digital doesn't mean it's perfect. Things such as jitter dramatically affect the sound quality - and the only way to get rid of that is with a really really good source ($$$$$) and good cables ($$$$$) or by running the stream through a digital anti-jitter filter such as Genesis Digital Lens which only costs around $1,800.

You also have to realize this product is aimed at people that don't blink at paying $20,000 for just a cd player, like the Linn sondek 12 cd player
