I know 3 graphic designers with PowerBooks and they all have 2GB (current maximum) in their machines. 4GB isn't a stretch at all considering these machines are quite old.
"Show all file extensions" under Preferences in the Finder. OS X is pretty smart too, even if it's turned off, if you make a file like "pamela_nude.jpg.app" it will show the full extension cause it knows you're trying to be sneaky:)
I have iScroll installed (on my 1ghz aluminium powerbook) and it will do a right click if you click the trackpad button while having two fingers physically on the trackpad (as opposed to the usual one for mousing around), plus the usual two finger scrolling trick the new 'books have anyway. Just as good as having two buttons, i picked it up instantly and use it all the time - the only thing you can't do is right-drag.
Yes, of course people might of thought otherwise, hence why I bothered writing the comment.
OS/9 is extremely obscure, even amongst the slashdot crowd and the name similarity to Mac OS 9, recent pro-Apple trend and M68K-Apple association could account for quite a bit of confusion, don't you think? Meanwhile, is linux licensed for industrial use? Does it even matter? I've seen old ATM's running DOS, so what the fuck is your point?
"According to Hansson, early versions of VMS were based on an M68K CPU board, running OS9. "Later on we changed to an industrial standard PC-board," he says. "Along with that we also changed operating system. We went for Linux since some of us had worked with it and we believed that moving from OS9 to Linux would be rather easy."
Mac OS 9 requires a PPC processor to operate, 8.1 was the last M68K compatible version. With that in mind I think they are referring to OS/9.
Not to mention, how is waking your computer from sleep, shutting down windows and booting into this 12 second "instant" mode faster than just opening the lid and using iTunes or VLC or WMP or what have you? What a stupid concept, what next "Oh we at AMI BIOS have integrated a convenient calculator and word processor, located under the Detect ATA Devices submenu." 5 seconds!
It's not McDonalds' responsibility to make sure you exercise properly, it's no secret their food is unhealthy so they're hardly being underhanded. People who are sloths will always be that way (and they will probably always shift the blame to somebody else - McDonalds, the TV, Burger King etc.)
Shiny reflective surfaces may mark/scratch when you put them in your pocket with your housekeys and loose change.
Diamond coated iPod nanos are reportedly offered as a BTO option but in typical apple fashion they are deemed too expensive and not competitive with todays hot alternatives such as the Dell DJ Ditty(TM).
Under pressure from the Consumer Stupidity Promotion and Protection Agency new nanos will now come enclosed with warning labels "Does not enable wearer to cogitate" and filed down corners to reduce risk of eye injury.
It's all transcoded from freeformat mp3 anyway - and the content is uploaded by their users...there's no guarantee of quality whatsoever. You're better off downloading from P2P (do you think the money you give to AllofMp3 goes to the artists? HAHAHAHA.)
You're absolutely right, we can't let the terrorists win, this secular technology is enabling them to purchase discounted electronics with the express purpose of malice!
To play movies full-screen in QuickTime Player out of the box: CMD-F (and pay $30) (and pay $30 for the next version) (and $30 more for the version after that)
If you open the movie in iTunes, there is a fullscreen button and playback controls (stop/pause/ff/rw/seek) easily accessible. In iTunes preferences there is the option to automatically playback video in the main screen, a seperate window, or in full screen. If you buy quicktime pro just for fullscreen playback well...as they say...a fool and his money are soon parted.
Try removing every trace of Quicktime from OS X and see how well everything works. I suggest you back up first.
Don't be stupid, removing quicktime from OS X similar but even worse then removing IE from windows. Systemwide JPEG decoding, GIF, and most other formats would die, sound playback would die in everything - probably most API calls to anything to do with sound would fail. It's not an application like it is on windows - it's the system framework for ANYTHING even remotely media related. Windows probably wouldn't work too well with DirectShow, DirectSound, VFW, and whatever DLLs is used for image decoding removed either.
I'm an OS X user with a pretty good grasp on unix. I tend to use the best software for the job as opposed to favoring certain projects because of their ideological principles.
This means yes photoshop instead of GIMP, mail.app instead of kmail, LAME instead of itunes (if I need to use mp3), apache instead of , quicktime instead of faac, and x.264 instead of quicktime. No favourites, just what's best.
I find the howling and bleating when MS bundles IE with Windows hilariously entertaining, especially in the face of the more...fanatical linux supporters. You get the One True GPL and all of it's inherited morals forcibly inserted into the oriface of your choice, with the DVD set being express posted the next day.
Your perceived value of "free" (as in beer) declines sharply when community-induced monthly sacrifices of "any competing commercial software" become the norm. You'd stop but the consequences (facing exclusion by a significant portion of whatever linux irc channel you happen to be on that week) aren't worth it, considering sound still doesn't work just right. An updated kernel module seems to be in CVS but there's some uncertainty about license compatibility so wait because You-Do-Want-To-Be-A-Good-OSS-Citizen-Don't-You?
Feeling a little restricted?
Fortunately for us there's always the Church of the Brethren, or even Christian fundamentalism for those who require rules which are significantly more flexible. Additionally, recent polls indicate the rituals and associated order are a good 53% more socially acceptable when compared to your average GPL fanatic.
If you found the above offensive in any way the recommend fix is to apt-get install sense-of-humour-0.3. This is very much a work in progress and may not catch all - subtle sarcasm seems to slip under the radar quite frequently. Questions regarding the quality of the code will be deleted immediately. Ungrateful attitudes are not appreciated - if you don't like it or think you can do better then bloody well code/fix it yourself. This software is absolutely free.;)
I don't mean to sound rude or judgemental, but since when exactly did the OSS community give two shits about the ins and outs of the patent system?
LAME infringes, libPNG infringed all through the unisys debacle, faac, ffmpeg would etc - that's just off the top of my head (and I'm not generally familiar with most free stuff)
Why should something as fundamental as font rendering be the exception? Couldn't you add a --FUGLY-FONT-RENDERING=OFF option at compile time to enable the enhancements? I don't know if you linux users can't tell the difference or don't care, but compared to quartz or even windows, it's really quite vile. Don't direct me to the red herring which is your advanced settings box, the hacky, stilted output won't improve until it's gutted and fixed properly - trying to do it with patch after insipid little patch is futile.
I guess I'm quite opinionated on this subject but it's not until you've come from a system with legitimate font rendering and try to use linux that you realize just how much of a shambles the current system is. When the metrics are wrong in the first place all the antialiasing methods in the world won't make it acceptable.
This isn't a whiny complaint about the current state of it as I don't even use linux - just an observation. I don't design fonts, do DTP or anything else that would make me particularly anal in this area, just general usage.
FWIW quartz isn't perfect either - I still don't think you can define specific antialiasing methods on a per screen basis when using a multi monitor system (ie - subpixel for internal LCD but normal smoothing for external CRT - global only) and anything drawn using quickdraw (rare, though quicktime is still littered with it) looks like garbage...
Another route Apple could take would be to make an implementation of the Cocoa API which can be compiled into a Windows app, and sell it to software developers as a way to make a more stable, more reliable app that will with just recompilation run on 1) Windows PCs, 2) Apple/Intel PCs, and 3) Legacy Apple/PPC computers.
Early versions of the PPC MacOS still were running a lot of 68K OS code in emulation; it is a safe bet that the Intel OS X will be 100% native code. And there is less hand-tweaked assembly code running around, so it will be easier for developers to simply recompile.
So maybe this wasn't such a bad thing all along? I wonder how much faster the new intel systems will be afterall? My 1ghz 12" powerbook already seems more responsive (esp under 10.4) at times than a lot of new PC's I use, and under heavy load there is no competition. Interesting times ahead...
And WINE/VirtualPC running so well may be the biggest disaster for MacOS -- why should Microsoft continue to support MSOffice/Mac when you can just run the Windows version in WINE? Why should Adobe build Acrobat for MacOS, when the Windows version (runs just as fast in WINE!) has more features and costs less??

Adobe says it is committed bringing its applications to Intel-based Macs. [10:52 am]"
You can burn them to CD, or use hymn to decrypt the AAC. And if you think in 30 years from now computers won't be powerful enough to brute force that encryption in about half a second you're just deluding yourself.
I know 3 graphic designers with PowerBooks and they all have 2GB (current maximum) in their machines. 4GB isn't a stretch at all considering these machines are quite old.
Pick any two.

I don't know but if your cheerios and milk start tasting salty perhaps this should be investigated toute suite.

Anybody offended by it shouldn't be allowed on the internet or let out of the house IMHO.

Just to nitpick here...the G5 can do endian swaps, but only at boot time. It can't switch on the fly dynamically like the G4 and previous CPU's could.
