While I agree more or less that Yahoo has been spreading itself thin - I don't see that as necessarily a bad thing. The new age s/w economy is undergoing a upheaval - its really a "rogue wave" that no one is on top of. Throw lots of stuff 'n see what sticks.
Speaking of what sticks, one area where Yahoo is doing pretty well is the crossover between IT and telecommunications. Right from co-branded DSL, hosting services to VoIP services and content they have been steadily building premiumassets. And if Brad is Senior VP of that portfolio - looks like he is doing a darn good job. They have a lot more industry cred with people like AT&T and BT - who are more willing to partner with them than Google. Just look at the telecom balance sheets to understand why it is might work out pretty well for Yahoo in the next couple of years. In other words, Yahoo's perceived disadvantage of being slower off the blocks - may very well work out to its advantage in some of the more traditional areas.
As for the people who complain about lay offs and how "managers just don't get it" - you are just missing the whole point. Corporations will always be ruthless when it comes to profitability and in spite of what libertarians might tell you - its only the state that can provide a viable safety net. So go out there, vote for more social security and taxes to ensure quality of life and justice for all. Don't expect corporations to be good samaritans with family values. they are just doing what they are engineered to do. Make profit out of capital.
1. Google_in_the_old_days didnt differentiate between results using who pays more principle.

3. Now for the first time, they actualy *rank* ,
the sponsored links based on who_pays-more.
I am not a star gazer, but it is hard to miss the current over here. Google sucessfully cashed in on the Page Citation Model, now for the Pre-IPO Google Inc. bsuiness sounds more interesting.
But lots of new cool stuff keep appearing on those pristine pages..i would surely like to see that continue. And..boy! do these things really mess up their interface.
50 years after Turing, and millions of dollars into AI research, we are still going in for Millenium shows of Intelligent colonies of Androids.
Sigh!
Audience participation is encouraged, the audience is asked to each pick a favourite, a pet to cheer for throughout the show, while the narrators are on hand to answer any questions.
This is outrageous. Cognitive Science as opposed to Good Old Fashioned AI was I think one of the most sensible currents in recent day CS research. And now just to discredit whatever sensible, realistic research occurs in these fields within the academic community here is Yet Another Crazy AI project grabbing front page visibility at/.
So i guess this is what the doc ordered for the consumer electronics industry. Cheaper, easier fab plants for all those nice'n cute gadgets..but as far as the high density chips go clearly the old etching is here to stay.
But why on earth is Intel (and AMD..) sitting on top of this huge oppurtunity and doing nothing about it ?
Seriously though NLP has a long way to go in cases of Info exchange in diverse language/Script combos such as malayalam in english and possibly vice versa.
And Chomsky is never ever gonna help out IB in this case for sure;)
