Is that 20% margin across all industries? How are you calculating margin? Because most ways people calculate it, you're going to see every pharma company leave your country. Even a lot of other industries would leave or be severely reduced. You'd lose so much investment money.

Something else you're ignoring is that margins across products within the same store often vary widely. Soda, for instance, almost always has a really high margin, while other products may be sold at or near (including under) cost, to get people in the door, and the high margins on other products means the overall margin is enough to stay in business.

  2. You're the first person to bring the Constitution into the conversation. We can criticize a company for doing things with its platform that we don't like without saying they're doing anything illegal. They're free to ignore us, we're free to stop using the platform.

  3. Never ever be confused by the difference between lower costs and lower charges

Yep, we're all good so far.

one hardly ever leads to the other

This is demonstrably false. In nearly every competitive market (like shipping), at least some of the cost savings are passed on to customers. If they don't, their competitors will, and they'll lose business.

  4. Haha, really? They bought non-nuclear supercarriers? That's dumb enough on its own but to do it without being able to form a support group, that's just lunacy.

  5. They didn't say "all women". Are we doing a #NotAllWomen campaign now?

  6. Or those who aren't sure what constitutes harassment (which is something that's changed a lot faster in recent years than it used to), or those who are worried about the (minority) of (highly publicized) cases where false accusations ruin someone's (not always a man's) reputation.

  7. Link goes to a paywall. Also, expressing conservative views in the past doesn't mean they lean to the right - I know quite a few leftists/liberals who agree with the conservative viewpoint on some issues.

  8. I haven't seen anyone who was actually there come forward about Bushnell; I've seen people who weren't there and read his books attack him. I've seen women who actually worked with him during that time come forward to defend him and say that there was no pressure to do anything besides work.

Yeah, I posted that comment before I got to that section of the lawsuit. If he can prove even half the stuff in the lawsuit to the court, then yeah, Google is going to have a hard time.

Maybe my knowledge of Brazilian and Indian politics is outdated, but I was under the impression they weren't far off of the US, at least in terms of major parties. Eastern Europe has a pretty wide range, but Western Europe is mostly some range of left.

What metrics are you using to say that Europe is more diverse than America?

  14. In a country of 320M people? So a 1:32,000 chance (per year, assuming it's randomly distributed, which it isn't). Sure, that number should be lower, but it's not anywhere near "war zone".

  15. I know people like that exist, I just think they're not as common on /. as they are in other places. Evergreen college was madness, but I don't think many people like that come here to post as AC.

  20. That article is incredibly biased and poorly argued.

The company is still run by white dudes like Damore at all levels.

White dudes at all levels, huh?

More to the point, his suit alleges that Google systematically discriminated against white men (and especially conservative white men) at a bunch of levels. The brief is here - IF what is claimed is true, then it looks like he's right.

  21. If the company wanted to hire more Jews, and there was evidence that a) Jews had different needs or interests, and b) the workplace wasn't meeting the needs of Jews, then sure, that's okay.

And he didn't say "women should do pair programming", he said it should be an option for people who are more social to do pair programming, and "people who are more social" tend to be women.

Political views are protected in California. Moreover, since he repeatedly stated in his document that we should judge individuals as individuals, and primarily talked about interest levels rather than abilities, I don't think his job of evaluating other people would be been impossible after that. Maybe it would have required more oversight if people were uncomfortable, but frankly I think people are spinning this way more than it should have been.
