  2. IPO == ? on Red Hat IPO Rumors on news.com · · Score: 1

    Okay, this has been bugging me for some time now. What the heck does IPO stand for? All of a sudden I seem to be seeing it all over the place, and everybody seems to assume that everybody else knows what it means :-/.

    Come on, only computer are supposed to have mysterious acronyms and abbreviations!

  3. Tape... bleh! on Ask Slashdot: ORB Drives, Anyone? · · Score: 1

    I remember doing backups on tape. I remember wanting to get one small 15K file back from one of those tapes. I remember waiting over half an hour to get that file back. No thanks!

    All I see are a bunch of questions about when the drive will be available :-). So far I haven't found any concrete discussion of problems with the drives.

  5. Have one here on Ask Slashdot: ORB Drives, Anyone? · · Score: 2

    I have one here right now. I haven't had a chance to play with it under Linux yet (it's not actually mine), but I don't see any reason why it shouldn't work. This is an IDE version; the SCSI versions aren't available yet AFAIK. It's really nice and fast too; you usually can't even tell the difference between it and a regular hard drive.

    BTW, they should be available in Canada. I believe my dad ordered this one from a Canadian distributor, anyhow.

    Feel free to contact me if you want to know more :-).

  10. Fujitsu on Toshiba Snubs Linux/IrDA Developers · · Score: 1

    The Fujitsu Lifebooks seem to be pretty good, aside from the winmodems. I have a 770TX, which is basically the same as the new E-series, and it's working wonderfully with Linux on it. Their tech support was quite happy to answer my questions about the various chipsets, etc. so I could check for Linux compatability.

  11. Fujitsu make good laptops on Toshiba Snubs Linux/IrDA Developers · · Score: 1
    I highly recommend Fujitsu laptops. I have a 770TX (Pentium 200), which is about the same as the new E-series Lifebooks. It has a really nice keyboard, and when I was looking at it, Fujitsu's tech support was really good for getting back to me with details about the components (PCMCIA chipset, etc.). About the only thing I've found that probably won't work with Linux is the built-in modem (I think it's software-based), but I wasn't really interested in it anyway.
