Trucks, RVs, busses, no problem, I know where their blind spots are, because they're all essentially the same. But if you think I'm taking the time to learn the blind spot of every car on the road, think again. If your safety relies on everyone else knowing where your blind spots are, then you'd better drive something else or keep the top down.

Well, insurance prices jumped (at least here in the US) a couple years ago as the market slid. Insurance companies make money on the stock market, so when that experienced a downturn, all of our insurance rates went up, much more quickly than inflation.

This is one reason some restored steam locomotives in the US aren't out doing excursions - the insurance premiums doubled, or more - and some preservation groups couldn't afford the higher premiums. I'm sure there are other effects of this, but I follow railroad news so that's one I happen to know about.

It's pretty frustrating, actually, and I switch to XP when I'm traveling to avoid having to boot it every time I use it. Every now and then I upgrade the kernel and go through all the ACPI settings again, to no avail. IIRC it'll go to sleep just fine but then won't wake up, but it's been a while since I've played with it.

No real point to this post other than Hibernation and Sleep aren't guaranteed in other operating systems, either.

Not true. Hauppage Win TV DVR USB 2 (don't quote me on the name of it - but it's something like that, and it has to have ALL of those parts - DVR, USB, and 2 - or it's not the right one).

I have one, works great. I use it with my laptop in the RV when I want to watch TV (quite rare - I think the only time I've actually used it that way was when I was actually living out of the camper for a time), and the rest of the time it's at home serving as a second tuner for the MythTV setup.

Only downside: MythTV goes a little nuts if it looks for the tuner and it's not there. I suspect it would be okay if I had the tuner plugged into to a different backend and took that backend down when I wanted to use the tuner in the camper, however. Still, it'd be nice if it understood that a USB tuner may not be present and handled that more gracefully. (Or it may be something in the drivers for the tuner causing it, and not MythTV at all - I haven't really looked into the issue.)

Comcast used to provide a free guide channel, but they took that away and replaced it with another useless (to me) ethnic/religious/shopping channel. You can only get schedule data from them now, if you convert over to their digital service. Actually...I'm not sure what's going on, but I have it with analog service.

Backstory: When I moved into my house last year I wanted a DVR from Comcast (I had one when I was with Cox and loved it), but they were out of stock at the time, so I went with digital cable figuring I'd upgrade later. To save money, since I didn't have the DVR, and because I wasn't watching the channels above 100 anyway, I switched back to analog service - but I never returned the digital cable box.

I still get the guide and all the conveniences of the box. I can't access the On Demand channel, nor the channels above 100. The picture looks to be a digital signal, if the blocks that become visible when there's a lot of motion on screen are any indicator. Meanwhile, the analog tuner I have in the MythTV box works just fine, so the data coming into the cable box must be analog (or transmitted as both digital and analog).

I have a MythTV system set up, with two tuners, but I don't have a machine connected to the TV, so I don't use it a lot; I'd rather be on the couch when watching TV instead of sitting in front of the computer in an office chair. It does record The Simpsons for me religiously, though. :)

Many subway cars have "dynamic brakes" which is what you're describing. I do not know if they are wired to backfeed the system, however. There are certain issues that have to be addressed when doing that; for example I remember reading about one system in Europe that had to have special precautions in place because it was possible all (electric) locomotives on the line could be heading downhill at the same time, thus generating a lot of electricity that had nowhere to go.

Most railroad locomotives have dynamic brakes - and in fact the dynamic brakes can actually give more braking power then the locomotive has pulling power. It's pretty amazing how well it works. (Of course trains still have the air brake system, too.) However in the US most railroad track isn't electrified, so all the dynamic braking energy is bled away as heat using a bank of resistors and large fans.
