for short stuff, The Modern Classics of Science Fiction, edited by Gardner Dozois contains 24 excellent stories and 2 kinda dumb ones.
BTW, some highly-rated poster said that "To Say Nothing of the Dog" was too complex for a 13 year old, but didn't say that about "The Trial". This individual has his/her priorities reversed.
I have seen a compiler use the16 and 8 bit registers when it knew the ranges because of some previous code. It was really neat to see how my C code became much faster ASM.
But I still had to rip out the routine and re-write it by hand to use MMX.
Independant game design does have a future. But to make a game takes not just programmers, but artists and writers. Worldforge has this, but it moves slowly. If WF had just one or two full time people, it would be done in half the time. And that's why we need corporate funding for OSS.
I used to work at a library, and one day I was thinking about censorware. So I asked several librarians: if the library had an infinite budget, would it have everything ever written. I got a few responses: some said yes. Some said no porn, and some said yes, but only non-fictional non-fiction (i.e. no holocaust-denials).
Neat, huh. Of course, it's a direct analogy. Me, I'd go for the "yes" answer.
Porn is allowed, by law. There can be restrictions enacted on it, but only "time, place and manner" restrictions, not content. No law can block content - that's called prior restraint, and has been ruled unconstitutional. The net is unlikely to have these restrictions, since the SC ruled that it was characterized by breadth, rather than scarcity (ACLU v. Reno - CDA).
"Obscenity" can be restricted, but porn isn't obscenity (look, playboy's still on hte shelves).
IANAL, but I've got one on the phone right now... Obscene matter must have no scientific, literary, artistic and political value - even porn has artistic value.
I've actually been to one of their meetings. I hate to say it, but the bible is male-supremacist. "the male is the head of the home" is a statement that males should be treated in some way differently to, even preferentially to, females. And if you talk about separate spheres, then you're not even worth my time. Separate byt equal never works, not only because it's not equal, but because I want to be able to wash dishes and I don't want to be the head of my house. The bible is sexist, the promise keepers are about the bible, and they are sexist.
BTW, I think that feminist groups and poetry meetings that don't let men in are sexist and wrong too.
Let's say a loophole like this was found in m$ offers around the world. And one day, everyone lined up and started taking M$ for all it was worth. Literally. And M$ couldn't cancel in time. And they went out of business. That would be fucking great! The world would be a better place! Any step in that direction would be a good thing.
It's OK if it's Columbia house, because *giving* them money would be wrong. Why? Because they support the Promise Keepers (a male supremacist group). If you take their money, that's less they can spend on groups dedicated to taking our freedom.
Hey, M$ is evil too! Taking their money, which they have not (in my view) earned, and have no moral right to, is just fine.
What if Ramsey had a hidden camera recording the feds... then it could be played at trial or on the news to show the feds stormtrooper tactics to the world. That's a legit use of these things!
I didn't see the show, but calculating on the back of a napkin, $240 of pudding is like a bathtub full, right? at least if you buy the tiny supermarket packs...

"
They like your band
They shake your hand
They smell like food that has gone bad

Bill bradley seems to be OK on these issues...

1. You have no heart.
2. The laziness of the parents doesn't mean that the children should suffer.
3. The laziness of the parents doesn't mean that the parents sohuld suffer. Everyone deserves a house, food, clothing and education, no matter what.
4. 1/3 of all homeless people in the US are insane.
