Well the interesting thing about the Bell Labs model was they funded basic research because they were a regulated monopoly that worked on 'you can make a profit of costs+a percentage' so they had no incentive to keep costs down - and thus did a LOT of research.
Unfortunately it's all a cluster.
I'm no defender of the boomers but it was primarily Bill CLinton who did it, putting the "excess" social security money into the general fund and "investing" it in government bonds.
And I also bet that public transport in cities is like the US - centered on the city center.
Many people in the US live in a suburb that is(say) west of the city center and work in one south of the city center. It may be a 40 minute drive by car but a 2 hour+ trip by rail/bus.
This is why Obama got elected - folks wanted "hope and change" and now, eight years later, have less freedom and are significantly poorer, unless you were at.1%er to start with.
Actually, it's also because of the Arab Spring and the French and German and Brit insistence that Qadaffi be taken out too.
The leaders of western countries are absofreaking idiots. Or maybe they want this horror - I'm beginning to think it's the latter because how else can you make these bad decisions..over and over and over again?
And I lived in the People's Republic of Massachusetts when this happened and I said 'Oh this RINO is now going to bankrupt private insurance and destroy the health system'
Idiots, all of you.
A little while back ( year or three) I was flipping through a magazine from... 1951 I believe. There was an article in there about the miracle energy source that was being researched at Cern - nuclear fusion, that would power the world of your grandchildren.
Well it's 2016 and yeah, the grandkids should be here - but nuclear fusion will still power the world of your grandchildren:)
Aren't your taxes based on the price of oil rather than an absolute value?
Unfortunately the decline of the Loony means that it gets more expensive for you EVEN THOUGH YOU PRODUCE THE FREAKING STUFF.
Gotta love it. NOT!
Especially since the old adage used to be 125K jobs/month to keep up with new population. But we're speeding up immigration, you know, that hope and change stuff so folks born here are poor and insecure.
I don't see how funding basic research, which usually pays very well just not necessarily immediately, is non libertarian. I simply can see later than next week.
What I despise about libertarians is that mostly all they seem to care about is legalization of hallucinogens.

Actually they aren't. The percentage of "retired people" in the workforce is at something like a 40 year high.
That isn't true. 46-64 - heck , even wikipedia, not the most accurate source, has it right.
It doesn't matter who votes, it matters who counts the votes.
We have that in the USA all the time.

You're dealing with liberalism here, reality takes a back seat. Having been poor as dirt, I know exactly what you mean.
Now, where are shipstones when you need them? Drat!
But it was the socialists currently in power that bankrupted them, so can you blame them?

No, hillary already has a white paper on it.

63%. Still down from 2006 -- and way down from 20 years ago.
Bernie believes in the supreme power of the state. QED.

Do you know how much money went into Ebola research? Really?
Because she's from California and they elect anyone with a D after their name.
Yeah he says he supports American jobs AND the TPP. You can't have both.
What this guy said!! Awesome, buddy.
This is not new. She regularly has done stuff like this for decades.
