    Well the interesting thing about the Bell Labs model was they funded basic research because they were a regulated monopoly that worked on 'you can make a profit of costs+a percentage' so they had no incentive to keep costs down - and thus did a LOT of research. Unfortunately it's all a cluster.

    I'm no defender of the boomers but it was primarily Bill CLinton who did it, putting the "excess" social security money into the general fund and "investing" it in government bonds.

    Actually they aren't. The percentage of "retired people" in the workforce is at something like a 40 year high.

    And I also bet that public transport in cities is like the US - centered on the city center. Many people in the US live in a suburb that is(say) west of the city center and work in one south of the city center. It may be a 40 minute drive by car but a 2 hour+ trip by rail/bus.

    This is why Obama got elected - folks wanted "hope and change" and now, eight years later, have less freedom and are significantly poorer, unless you were at .1%er to start with.

    Actually, it's also because of the Arab Spring and the French and German and Brit insistence that Qadaffi be taken out too. The leaders of western countries are absofreaking idiots. Or maybe they want this horror - I'm beginning to think it's the latter because how else can you make these bad decisions..over and over and over again?

    A little while back ( year or three) I was flipping through a magazine from ... 1951 I believe. There was an article in there about the miracle energy source that was being researched at Cern - nuclear fusion, that would power the world of your grandchildren. Well it's 2016 and yeah, the grandkids should be here - but nuclear fusion will still power the world of your grandchildren :)

    I don't see how funding basic research, which usually pays very well just not necessarily immediately, is non libertarian. I simply can see later than next week. What I despise about libertarians is that mostly all they seem to care about is legalization of hallucinogens.
