I was thinking about this the other day after I finished reading All Tomorrow's Parties. I bet you could come up with an interesting movie about someone if you could cobble together all the footage all these cameras take of one person. A year in the life.... or whatever. Bet you could hem up some important people cheating on their wives, getting drunk after that AA meeting, etc. Possibilities are limitless. Maybe sometime all this random footage will be behind some IIS servers that get haxored and hit the public domain.

This reminds me of the Neuromancer game on the C64/Amiga/AppleIIGS a loooong time ago. One of the tricks was getting an original Atari joystick and taking it to a worshipper of Pong so he could play the game again. He gave you a piece of psychological software called Zen that would keep you from flatlining. Damn it's scary how much I remember from that old-tyme game, would like to play it again sometime.

Just kidding, have to say something tongue-in-cheek once in awhile. I support the view that parenting is your responsibility. Ultimately Smith and Wesson isn't responsible when someone gets shot, just like Microsoft won't be responsible if your kid has violent dreams from playing games on windoze. Personally I think if you teach your children well, and you have a tight relationship with them, your kids won't go on shooting sprees and they'll know the difference between cartoon violence and how things are in the real world.

If we helped them enough, perhaps they'd become developing countries and eventually compete with us. Bye bye cheap sweatshop labor. Hello higher prices. I think it's time for the US to become a nationalist country. Fuck the world and mind our own business. Close the borders.

"People always seem to forget that if there is other life out there, that it'd most likely be *completely* different from us. Not in a looking funny kind of way, in *every* way."
According to the concepts of evolution, creatures evolve in reaction to their environment, to take advantage of their surroundings. Ultimately the goal of evolution is to produce a robust, flexible organism that not only reacts to it's environment, but to shape it to suit itself. The simplest organisms take advantage of their environments to feed and reproduce; the most complex (arguably humans) seek to change their environment to suit them. Ironic that up to a certain evolutionary point, organisms react to their environments by changing their dna and defense mechanisms, but in the final analysis, the most evolved creatures stop reacting and begin changing the environment.
At any rate, my point is this: in a similar environment, on a similar planet, I see no reason life wouldn't take the same evolutionary paths as we have. So under closely related conditions after a few million years, I believe it's likely for some humanish creatures to reach the plateau that we have. Our superiority is no fluke; it's the result of millions of years of careful genetic reactionism.

Let's see here... >1) ALL cable companies have protected terratories, no other company can attempt to compete in an existing service area with the existing cable co. That's bullshit. I install cable modems for AT&T/@Home here in Dallas. I regularly see Coserve and AT&T (formerly TCI) with customer pedestals in the same neighborhood. People out here have a choice in some areas. BUT if you go with Coserve, a cable modem is NOT an option. That blows, but usually there's an AT&T pedestal nearby with an open port on it.
However, what you say about the low margins on cable modem service is true. The cable companies usually offset this small margin by providing lots of digital services. A good percentage of people getting cable modems installed have digital phones over cable as well as cable tv service. 3 services, a $100 bill per month... it gets pretty sweet for the cable company.
