Konquerer that came with Mandrake 7.2 is beautiful. I've never had it crash before, but like many apps that came with KDE2 it'll sigsev 11 or whatever on exit. It's not really a problem since I'm closing the app anyway. And finally having autocomplete work for both URL's and drive paths is a godsend in itself. Netscape has made how many versions of Communicator for Linux and still doesn't have this feature? It's wack.

...I let everyone know how vulnerable their computer is to attack due to the fact that they're now on a LAN and the connection is more or less permanent. DHCP isn't a security feature, it's done for the convenience of us installers. We end up hard coding or statically coding about 30 percent of computers ourselves since dhcp can be a moody bitch. I always tell people to get a firewall and will download, install and configure it for them if they seem like complete idiots. @Home needs to strike a deal with NetworkIce or someone to make it a part of their software package. I did an install last week where some guy had anticipated his install, done his homework, and had an unopened copy of Blackice on hand. I was impressed. @Home isn't a bad service but they do need safeguards in place. They don't push security to their customers because they don't want to breed paranoia in them. Luckily, everyone that trains with me gets to know the importance of firewalling and security and inform customers of the risks of broadband.

That's true. Why does every movie with Germans in it by americans portray them as evil geniuses or terrorists? Not every german worldwide was involved with and condoned ww2 but that's not how the media would have you think. From an engineering standpoint, we'd probably still be riding bicycles and canoeing across rivers if it weren't for the germans. So show some respect.

Evidently ISO just maintains that you follow certain guidelines and pay them huge amounts of cash for adhering to their standards, and in return you get an ISO cert that tells other companies you document your procedures. It's nearly pointless, however, once you realize the following.
You could build an air conditioning unit from Legos and twine, and whether it actually works or not is irrelevant to ISO. As long as you have documentation stating specifically HOW you build it you'll get certified. ISO 9000-9002 certs are all about docs, and little else.

I loathe the iMac and much of what it stands for -- especially that fruity design (not to mention that ridiculous mouse). Yeah, it's a little fruity, and the mouse sucks, but the concept is valid and I bet alot of pc companies are pissed they were too coporately hard-headed to think of it first. The iMac represents more than fruity colors, it's conceptually very valid. It comes with a built in NIC and no floppy. Apple makes all it's system software bootable from a cd, so there's no stringent need for floppies. Keeps the price down, makes the computer prettier. Bottom line here is that Apple was not only saving a buck but looking forward towards a net-centric approach to computing. Need software? Get it from the net. Wanna move files? Do it across a network or the net. Were they wrong with these assumptions? How many Linux users and Open Source horn-blowers could survive more than 2 days without net access?
But I digress. Emachines deserved to get spanked. So does anyone else who blatantly copies an innovative, quality design that another company has spent countless dollars and hours working on.

The thing that everyone's overlooking (if any of you actually read up on their website) is that they're gonna pack this distro with their motherboards from now on. A motherboard manufacturer, shipping motherboards with linux. Granted, their distro _may_ suck, but even if it does, it gives linux a little more exposure. It just might speed adoption into uncertain people's homes. It even opens the possibility of more Mom and Pop computer stores selling linux pre-installed.
Maybe I'm being too optimistic, but as long as they open source their distro and provide good tools that everyone can use, more power to them. It's not like this is some marketing scam designed to give them press.
