Mandrake is aware of this problem and implemented urpmi to take care of it. Simply typing urpmi apache will solve dependencies and install apache for you. It's not apt-get but it's close in many respects.

Mandrake is struggling just like everyone else. They had a big infusion of cash last year and big corporate manager types came along for the ride. After forking mandrake into e-learning crap and wasting money they all got the boot. Mandrake was struggling and turned to it's users for help. I don't see anything wrong with it. Under their current business plan they should return to profitability by the end of this year. Kudos to Mandrake for creative solutions to serious problems.

And by the way, mandrake and everything it creates is 100% gpl'ed. All their nice tools like Drakx, DiskDrake, etc. are all FREE. Keep this in mind next time you slam them. They're NOT Redhat or SuSE but they play in the same sandbox.

Oh and Mandrake recently penned a deal to come preinstalled on those affordable Microtel pc's that you can get online from Walmart. Another smart move.

As an added bonus if I buy an XBox and no games it causes MS to lose a few bucks. That justifies the purchase.

Mandrake IS server-friendly. Consider this: alot of companies are running NT and win2k right now. Their admins are toying with linux to see if they can save some cash and add some stability to their networks. These point-and-clicky MSCE's are going to shoot for a distro they can point-and-click their way to success on. Mandrake happens to be one of these distros.

Also there's no gun in the installer that points to your head and says "install ALL the desktop cruft or I'll shoot you". I got a minimum install on my old Compaq rackmount server that weighed about 100 megs and you could make it even smaller. This was DURING install, not post-install. Individual package selection is where it's at, you gotta do an expert install and have some foresight.

Maybe you haven't seen or used or installed Mandrake in awhile. I suggest you try it on a server soon just for fun. There are thousands of people (if not tens or hundreds of thousands) using Mandrake to serve right now regardless of it's desktop orientation. I happen to be one of them.

Mandrake has alot going for it actually. Decent security out of the box, the advanced apache server, good samba, etc. etc. plus it runs on damn near anything.

It's as if someone were 'stealing' cable by hooking it up illegally then the FBI comes and takes your TV. Maybe it's not an accurate analogy because you don't impede other cable subscriber's ability to watch cable channels but still. The computers didn't really have much to do with it. If the FBI wants to see if people modified the cable modems, just pull the cable modems.

From the picture it looks like they were using some oldschool 5 1/4" bay cable modem..never have seen one of those before but I guess it would justify confiscating the computer if indeed that ugly huge device is the cablemodem.

It's a known fact in the US that you can get away with absolutely ANY crime as long as you can afford it. Some examples:

O.J. Simpson: Killed his wife and her 'friend' in cold blood. Paid enough, got off. More recently, indicted in an Ecstacy smuggling and money laundering venture. Again, paid enough, got off.

President Bill Clinton: Received a hummer from an intern. Did nasty things with her and cigars. Lied in court (perjury). Paid enough, got off. (no pun intended)

Senator Condit: Had an affair with Chandra Levy. Made her 'disappear'. Sept. 11th came along and made the media forget about his whole fiasco. According to the police, never was a suspect, so he got off also. I think a month or so ago they found her remains. Not much mentioned since. Really Hoffa-esque.

So the lesson we can all learn: get rich and you can get hummers, kill people, etc. and you'll always smell rosy and never spend a day in jail.

  20. Re:jeez on WorldCom CFO Accused of $3.6 Billion Fraud · · Score: 2

One thing to keep in mind here is that stock value sometimes has little semblance to the *actual* value of a company. Worldcom is still in business and still bringing in heaps of positive revenue on a daily basis. Yeah, it's a big setback having this much debt suddenly appear, but it's not like most corporations don't have debt anyway. Amazon operated in the red for how many years? That's one tiny example..if the investors see improvement in the company at crucial junctures (like CFO's being replaced, etc) they'll regain confidence.

As an aside, is it just me, or are most investors (and investment houses) stuck on 'the sky is falling' Chicken Little mentality? Why can't a business take a hit these days without everyone panicking and screaming 'SELL SELL SELL!!!'. All I can say is, I'm glad I'm not at the reigns of a giant conglomacon like this one.

We're getting reports of lots of smoke and 10 foot flames from some area homes' fences. Ok now it looks like from this angle..yes the fire has proceeded through the northern tip and is now in the middle. The northern fire is gone as the fire has moved south and consumed a few homes in it's path. Some child's skateboard can be seen smoldering from our CNN satellite images but it's nothing serious. What's that? Oh yes, the fire has now been extinguished. A short but tragic event. You can see how brokenhearted this one man looks sitting on the charred remains of his lawn."
