this is mostly from memory, maybe someone can follow with numbers.. 1) accuracy depends on signal strength, how many satatlites you're tracking, and their relative position to each other. 5 sats in a triangle type formation will give you more precision than say, 6 in a near straight line across the sky. There's also a ionsphere induced error, which can be corrected but is normaly not on lower cost commercial units like mine. Avaition units can correct for that error, or military units can use a seperate encryped signal to correct.
2) On a descent recivier, (ie it can hold good sat signal strength while in motion) speed doesn't make much difference. Unless you go faster than 250mph, iirc, where civilian units shot down.
3) I'd not try to drive down the road with most gps systems.:) Mine gets at best 4 meters epe (estimated position error). Unless you'ce got a high grade reciever, you're not gonna get much better. 4 meters is a big swerve.:)
I've used the cradle as a null modem cable, as some of the posters are doing to give it a ip addy.. but would it be possible to plug the base unit into a external modem? i.e., bring extenal modem + pda to hotel room on trips and save on palm3/5 modem?
> Is this relevant anymore? I mean, what can Mozilla do that IE doesn't do already?
Good question. Here's your good answer: It can be uncoupled from windows, in fact, it never was coupled with windows. It's solaris build (I assume) won't be a half-win32 port built in to let the browser run. Windows is big, yes. But mac, UN*X, BeOS and friends aren't dead. Netscape 4.xx is dead, thou. imho, and anyone arguing that it *doesn't* need to be replaced needs mental help. Matter of fact, a dyed in wool MS friend of mine *likes* mozilla, so I know you're just a troll and most MS windows users are more polite than yourself.
Sorry if this sounds bitter, spend half the day in meetings instead of doing what I needed to do.
What's more interesting is the guy who offered him $200 to eat one of the hot dogs, before they went away... makes me wonder about the crazies on the net sometimes.:) Hope his neighbor doesn't have net access, after all, one person from his town is checking his backyard, as of day 15..:)
Anyone thought of an emulation-based box? Probably not possibly ATM due to tech and licsense reasons, but a console that could play NES/N64/PSX/PS2, dreamcast, etc, would be neat. The price on something like that, thou, is something I'm not even gonna think about.:) Nor am I going to wonder how to run cart and cd based games pratically on a system like this.... it's just an random thought. Back to perl now, oh well..
Noone seems to be talking about what this is actually about, so here's a brief summary of what it is and isnt.
It isn't
1) NTSC or PAL/etc compatible. 2) It isn't WebTV
It is
1) Designed for use with AT&t's upcoming set-top box/boradband service, one or both of those being called ITV. 2)Linked to a e-commerece site dedicated to deals, coupons, maps, tickets, etc, apparently. 3)Apparently also compatible with parellel port and usb print sustems. 4) Seems that's about all it is, it's a fairly short PR article.
Thou I do agree with the poster who said it should be able to take a regular video input... I'd love to print out some metal gear solid secenes, with C4 blowing up walls, maybe.:)
In order for ILOVEYOU to run, the user spesificaly needs to run the file themselves There isn't much MS can do about this, is there?
Just one correction here, ISP working friend of mine tells me that you don't actually have to run this particular one... the preview pane in outlook is enough to run it, apperently.
I don't normally do "me too" posts, but I gotta add a bit to this one...
My router ran 2.0.37 before it died. (massive failure of 9 year old hd) The new one got a 2.2 kernel because it was a backup/test box, and wanted it up in mimimum time. But, it uses no more than is available in 2.0. 2.2 was on it, and it worked. In short, use what works. Don't upgrade for upgrade's sake.
Thou on a more interesting note, the same box is running debian potato. Talk about a moving target there.:) (Elvii forgets what he just said about not upgrading for upgrade's sake.:)
Break up as proposed is good, but I think the initial rumours of 3 separate companies (OS, Applications, Internet) would be better. After all, what if they start integrating IE into Office? We don't want to go through another DoJ...
Not really an issue, imho. IE/windows combo happened because ms passed the IE devel costs onto the customer, not by charging directly, but by hiding it in the price of 98/Office/Whatever, and calling it free. If they're two seperate companies, there're gonna want to milk every buck possible... and that means free bundles to lure the customer in, not whole office suites or similiar aborsbed in the cost of other things. Make any sense? If not, then I've been up too long.
The FAQ says riva 128 is supported by xfree 4.0 w/o these drivers, and while I know it's not a high performance chipset, I've got one kicking around. (in the box I'm typing from, actually) Anyone know/run one of them under xfree 4.0 and care to comment? or should I just run 3.3.6 and utah-glx?:)
Gotta agree with this one, seeing as this doesn't really try to address the problem. People will always be able to post/view/etc "objectionable" material, whetever you happen to define as objectionable. So government/people keeps doing band-aid fixes, trying to do via law what *should* be controlled via basic (imho, anyway) values that should be instilled at childhood. Never gonna work. Not gonna go off on a religious/family values soapbox, but without going too far off topic, this kinda thing isn't gonna work. Erotica isn't dirty, it's just percived that way due to how western civilization has shaped us. (Those in US, anyway) It's up to personal values and freedom to decide how to view, or not to view, anything in a given medium, and things like this only hinder those freedoms, imho, without *really* solving the problems.
End of rant, hope some cohrent message can be made out of all this.:)
Just one thing to remember, Linux itself can never be B1, or any other level certified, it's only complete evaluated systems - case, drives, os, etc. I'd not know b1+ cert well if I didn't need to know it.. thou never had to use it, gotta love government sometimes, huh?:)
Yes, we have RA,.mp3, and a few others that I can't think off of the top of my head, but even a free/openly lisensed implememtation won't fly at this point unless it sounds better than mp3. As others have pointed out, mp3 is the high card, the player to beat, and free alone won't cut it here.
Will it be used? Probably. Will it be the big thing mp3 is? Odds are not.
As so many others have said, it's not going to work, for many reasons. Installed base mean anything to bmg? I guess not, I guess the millions of cd players worldwide are broken now...
The only question is, how long can stupid schemes like this be cooked up for? First, we've got the DVD "protection". Which really just tries to control playback. Hm, that's been blown wide open. DIVX? Dead because it wasn't convient to the end consumer. The only reason that things like this come out is so corporations can "protect" their profits. Well, DeCSS isn't hurting profits. And people *not* buying a new, non-interoperable format isn't going to help their profit either. So eventually, the bean counters are going to realize it costs less to put out good content, then to try to hide it behind whatever the new idea of the hour is. Copying? No problem. Put extras you can't copy easily, like cover artwork, posters, etc... but give me easy to read cd's. Sheesh, I could go on forever, but I think this makes my point pretty clearly.
This sucks, but is to be expected. DVD isn't just a USA thing, AFIAK, but has to have cooperation worldwide for the zone deal to have happened.
The question is, will we have the right to use what we have rightfully bought? That's all he did, after all, helped users access data that they PAID for. This will stop, once people get fed up with corporations screwing them over.
Well, what about the possibility of a very clever open-source developer actually adding a subtle security vulnerability intentionally while helping out on a feature or two of linux?
Yup, that's happened too. Believe it was TCP wrappers that had a backdoor that sent uid, or gid, or similiar, + hostname/ip to a hotmail account... was found on a cracked server, so not exactly the same as you say, but I think it proves the source audit deal, at least for some programs.
Memory is a little foggy on this one, anyone have a better description than I?
> I may be wrong, there may be a patch for USB kerboards under 2.2.x
There's a near full backport of the usb subsystem to 2.2.x, actually. Try www.suse.cz/development/usb-backport/ for a patch to update 2.2.14 to 2.3.39's usb stuff. not sure how solid it is, as i haven't tested it yet, and it's better to have the usb stuff in a "stock" kernel than depending on patches, but maybe this might make it into 2.2 upon release of 2.4? or am I just dreaming again?:)
This means I may not have to sit through 70+ meg updates on my 56k modem! I like the sound of that!:)
Thou it does present a problem... which version to stick with until woddy final is out? Frozen or ongoing potato? I think I'll have to choose frozen, just so I don't have the huge downloads i mentioned.. (or so I hope, anyway.)
that, and I don't have to change my apt.sources file to use frozen.:)
Maybe with something like a source-exchange deal in place on a per-distro basis, we could take advantage of funded distro's that don't seem to be the next ms...
Don't get me wrong, I think RH is a good distro, thou I perfer debian myself. Mostly because of apt-get.:) But let's look at both sides of the coin here:
1) A bit of funding, to help excourage people to get a new "stable" debian out faster.:)
2) We need at least one debian distro, something we can trust to be "uncontaminated" be monitary interests.
I know, those last two are a 180 from each other. But it's early, and i need coffee or something.
Btw, to Rube: good comment. Post this kinda stuff under a account so more people see it..
I agree, but I think the DOJ reaction is "Monopoly! Looks like they're screwing things up! Let's take quick action, that we're not really sure what the end results will be!"
Open API's - great idea. Unforunatly, seems either DOJ can't (outside of their power?) or haven't considered it. Doesn't seem like it'll solve the situation to most people, does it? I mean, how many people see open API/etc as a benifit at this point? Most would see more of a benifit in breaking up ms, as then they're little and can be dealt with, at least in people's minds.
Too early for coherent thought, so sorry if this doesn't make much sense
I'm not an expert in such things, but this brings up an interesting question: What rights do temps have at various places/states? Last time I temped, it was a christmas season time thing, and no benifits, etc, so I can't say personally... any thoughts?
Can't tell if it's any good or not, as it's too slow for me to look at atm, but I'd bet that given the number of people who read/., and the fact that it's so slow, means lots of/.'rs didn't hear of it. Seems a large majority of people, in fact.. guess I'll wait a week or so to read it.:)
While BigClock (ver 2.5) survived the rollover just fine (running on palm IIIe, os 3.1) bigclock turned on the backlight and ran a fireworks show to celebrate the rollover.. Just a little tidbit while we're mentioning computer clocks.
