Strange and probably means nothing, but now I really think slashdot needs a y2k check.:) The last 4 articles sid's go between 00/01/01 and 99/12/30, not terribly important I know, but maybe rob and crew should do a bug-hunt or release a current copy of the code so w can help.:) Me, I've been battling perl constantly all year, so I'm ready to battle some more.:)
As I type this, the last article (Am I Alone) has a sid of 00/01/01. This article, posted later, seem to have a sid of 99/12/31 ? Though the intro line bit does say 4:10 am, jan 1 2000, hmm....
Had a few to drink, but double checked these numbers... right as of 5:40 pst... maybe/. needs more y2k checking.:)
Last. Well, that's it, I'm fdisk'ing all my systems and installing the "unstoppable" Windows NT. I'd install Hurd, but I like my bugs professionally programmed, thank you.
BTW, the unnamed catagory linux seemed to have scored first in is being consitent.:)

Drat. i didn't realize it was rot-13'd, (drinks still wearing off) but caught the 13 difference between each char.... and deciphered it manually... such things happen after drinking too much.:) oh well, still figured it out myself.
Hapy 1900, everyone! (or 19100 if you'ew just cat'ing your dates still!:)
For me, very. My desk is semi clean (I just scribbled a note on how to pass/define a function for a app I'm writing, other that that and mouse pad, remotes, etc..) where before my palm i couldn't see my desk. I can now remember passwords, phone numbers, where before I was lost. Could I live without it? Without a doubt. do I want to go back to hunting down numbers in a huge pile of papers? Taking notes I never find later? Not on your life. All I need now if a wireless modem for it for quick updates from the road, and when I'm away from my desktop for 1+ weeks... then I'm all set.
Well, lemme tell ya a secrect, CmdrTaco.. Last time I gambled and lost, i brought about ~$50, if memory serves, left atm + credit card + checkbook at home, plus had a car w/full tank of gas in the casino parking lot. So unless you sell the car, or bring credit cards, etc to casinos, you're safe.:)
What is needed is a way to download mp3's, and pay per song directly to the artist, preferably with a discount if you buy a full album of mp3's, imho.
tThen the artist can make more then they're current cut, and we, the consumer, can get lower prices for music. Any ideas on how such system could be setup?
Anyone know what minimum specs for this are? I don't use VMWare because my processer (p233) wouldn't run concurrent os's well... I know I *should* run a beefy machine to do something like this, but for situations like mine, where it's plenty of machine for my use, but not the newest wiz-bang 750 mhz chips, will this work well or at all? Lots of non-cutting edge systems out there, ya know.:)
Personally, I might buy it just so I can play with the new improved BFG, but I'd rather see some good flightsims/stragety games come out for linux... thou I know none of that is gonna happen till after Xfree 4.0 and DRI. So hurry up, Xfree!:)
I forget what it's called, but what if those fragments of DNA are "leftovers"? Wonder if some of that 42 percent junk dna is something like that, and has no proteins as it doesn't do anything *anymore*?

I recently got a palm III, after comparing them to WinCE devices. I decided I wanted the extra battery life and a OS designed for a small platform, not a cut-down-yet-another API to support version of windows. So they rename WinCE, so people will still realize it's still the same ball game. The PDA game goes on. It's been said before, but spiliting windows into so many versions is *very* bad, you gotta admit, no matter what your views are on MS.
But one thing is sure, "Windows Powered" probably aren't gonna be better than the current WinCE crop. MS should just break down and liscence/use/enhance either PalmOS or EPOC32 or some other suitable PDA OS, imho. I don't think I'm the only one who sees no future in WinCE, thou IANASE (I Am Not A Software Engineer)
True, but will that help their image when people tend to go crazy over any type of invasion of privacy, even something this minor? Bad PR builds up and is never good for a company, remember.. Should be a box during install to say "Allow my vid card info to be sent to ID for develoment reasons", imho. and probably unclecked by default..
ID doesn't have to lose, just the bad PR is enough to do them major $ harm... think about it, first FPS games are (wrongly, imho) connected to things like school shootings, so bad PR like a privacy lawsuit might be one foot in the grave for even big companies like id, thanks to PC and privacy-crazy folks. Not that being privacy crazy is bad, mind you. If parents don't let kids buy Quake VIII, or don't buy it themselves, then I doubt if the./ type buyer is enough to keep id alive..
Wow... thought nobody else remembered those anymore... that was the first computer I used, complete with tape recorder and later, big silver box that had the 5 1/4 floppy drive, thermal printer ability, etc. Now I do feel old, and still under 25.:)
To be slightly on-topic here, I never used a bbs untill we got a 286, and added a modem to it.. but remember a good BBS Called Dark Side of the Moon that had users, good files, doors, etc... everything that I've seen mentioned in this thread. Those were the days.:)
A laser type-deal. Standard on Star Trek: The Next Generation and later model borg... kind hard to pick up if you don't watch star trek, thou, I admit.
Are these open ala Nvidia and Sblive, "Here's some code but no specs", or are the open ala Matrox g200/400, where you actually have specs and can do useful work beyond optimizing what they give you? The article was brief and didn't seem all that clear, imho...
As I still only have a riva128, matrox's (imho) better open-ness will lead me to get a g200/400 when I do upgrade...
Massive kernels are well and good for simplicity, but in the case of evolving drivers, they're very bad... the linux SBlive drivers are as of yet *very* immature, imho... I still get some skipping where I've never had problems before with either my old ensonique 1371 or older isa cards.. if I didn't have modules, I'd not be having fun atm.
But, you can have it either way... it's nice to have a choice, imho. Thou do agree that the article probably shouln't have mentioned modules without going a bit more in-depth about them... "make modules; make modules_install" isn't enough after you recompile a new kernel if you're a newbie, imho. Guess they're counting on RH's gui stuff to allow for configuring/loading module, thou as I don't use RH, that's just a guess.
What are the minimum specs for playing sound/video, (ie, can I run it on a spare p200) or would it be wiser to just get a decoder card? Can't exactly afford to get p2+ atm, so wondering what I might need to put a low cost player together... in linux pereferably...
How well does temptest equipment work when there's say, 3 moniters, 4 computers, 1 tv, and a mass of other cordless devices filling up the air/area with RF noise? Can they focus on just one source, or is all EM soup? Anyone know?
- All this needs to fit in the size of a credit card (like in that one scifi show, the name of which eludes me . ..), and it needs to be capable of projecting a holographic image of a quirky female AI who makes wise cracks and gives unwanted advice.

but I did like Photon.... made X11 seem like, well, a lot more than it has to be. Maybe photon isn't as flexible as X, not sure as I just used photon, never look into it deeply, but that it fits on a floppy - with browser - makes it a windowing system i'd like to see in linux.. too bad my coding is lousy...
not always a service pack... nt5/w2k is gonna have about 10+ hotfixes before it's first service pack... are people not going to install those because it's not just one update?
I don't think so. They'll do more than one, any good admin will do whatever is nessecarry to secure his servers.
